You sir are a god-send and a saint. Will be paying forward good deeds as much as humanly possible. Saved me hundreds (if not 1k to replace). Fixed this myself in about an hour and I'm not in the least bit mechanically inclined. Total cost - about $22 - and most of that was shipping. Thanks so much - from the easy to follow video to the links to the parts - this was just fantastic.

Thanks for the video. It took 45 minutes of painstaking fiddling to dig out the old grommet. Took a week to get a new grommet ($15 plus shipping). After another 45 minutes of trying to get the new grommet in place, I gave up and called a repairman. Best money I ever spent.

A well made set of instructions! I made one deviation, I removed the the diverter motor for inspection (I found the contacts needed to be cleaned) before removing the grommet. This made the removal of the old grommet much easier (and I re-installed the diverter motor before installing the new grommet). Now I have a water tight working dishwasher again - Thank you Scott!

Just followed this video and saved >$350. Here is one more point just in case someone hasn't mentioned this. In our case, the old grommet was quite deteriorated, so when I dug it out, it disintegrated leaving behind a metal cup that is actually inside the grommet. At first, I thought the grommet was too big until I realized the old grommet metal cup was still inside. Thanks!

Thank you Scott and David! The instructions Scott gave in this video explained perfectly how to replace the motor seal, and now that the new one is in the leak has stopped. Like others who commented, I did not have the dental pick to pull out the old seal, so I mangled it pretty well using a screwdriver. Thank goodness the replacement seal recommended by David Olson from AVX comes with a new spring in the grommet! You can get the seal and have it shipped from AVX for a total of $8.48. Look in shipping options and choose USPS envelope. Unless you absolutely need your dishwasher repaired by tomorrow, this will save you around $11.00.

Thanks for the very useful video. I want to share my recent experience here. My Whirlpool dishwasher WDT910SAYE2, has been leaking for probably many days before I realized it. After some research, I found this video and tried to remove the little diverter shaft seal. I bought a dental tool set for this. But I simply could not take it off. Later after took everything apart I found I put the dental pick too deep, it actually went through the bottom plastic where the seal sits on, so I was trying to pull the whole bottom of the dishwasher with my dental pick. When you try to pick it, do not go too deep. It will still be tight, but I think it is possible. Good luck to you! What I want to share here is, even if you could take out the seal, better still check the bottom. I end up pulling out the whole dishwasher and lay it down by the side, took out the diverter motor, found the diverter motor has already accumulated some residual and rust due to multiple days of leaking. I ordered the sump part (comes with the little seal) and the diverter motor, then when I try to replace these (following the video by ApplicancePartsPros), I found my main motor's grommet has a whole in it, so I have to place another order for the grommet as well. If I knew it, I will simply order a whole sump + pump + motor assembly, which comes cheaper than ordering different parts separately, and they are all new and pre-assembled together, much easier to replace. Lastly, when putting the sump back in, you have to push down really hard. Lessons learned: 1. Check for leaks from time to time, or get some water leak detector to do the job. 2. When picking out the seal, do not go too deep. 3. Better still check the whole bottom for any other faulty parts. 4. Check the prices, ordering the whole assembly might be a wiser choice.

FYI, quick tip, thought I would share, Just did this repair yesterday on my 10 year old LG Dishwasher. My grommet looked fine to me, but I went ahead an ordered a replacement online with a 2 day delivery turn around. In my haste to fix, I had forgotten about my local appliance parts store that normally has about any part that you would need. So, instead of waiting on new part, I took the grommet and the housing gasket to the store to see if they had it. Unfortunately he didn't have the parts in stock but, the owner gave me a tip to try and told me to go to the auto parts store and buy a tube of Silicone RTV that is used on engine gaskets and put a coat around the gromment and housing gasket, reinstall and let them set for a few minutes, reassemble DW and run a quick rinse cycle and that should fix your leak. This fixed my leak !! Cost me $8.00 for the silicone RTV. So, if your grommet and gasket look ok when you remove them, give this fix a try !! Worked for me and potentially save us $600-$800 for a new dishwasher !!

I have a Kenmore 665.13262K112 and the TC5.5x16x18 worked perfectly. No more leak. The Www.bearing.canada worked for me. They now have a much cheaper Canada Post shipping option which took only 2 days. Thank you Scott for the video and to those who commented. It is true that the hardest part is removing the seal. Not a drop! Thank you so much. Your advice worked perfectly on my 5 year old Kitchenaid KUDE48FXSS5 dishwasher. The seal was totally rotten and falling apart. The $5 AVX Seals part beats the unnecessary $60 diverter motor or the ridiculous $450 service call. Getting the original factory seal out was tedious and frustrating without the cool dental pick you used (it took me an hour of tinkering with an optical screwdriver and needle nose pliers to not damage the plastic housing around the seal), but taking the dishwasher out completely to replace the diverter motor would have been nightmarish. So I'll get over it. The miracles of the internet, couldn't have done this 10 years ago. Great video!

It took me two tries to get one that worked. The first grommet was taller than the oem one and it was a slightly narrower, meaning it wasn't a tight fit. It had the tightening spring inside, but still didn't work, it let out as much water as the worn-out oem grommet. I ordered another from a different company and it was a much better fit. Worked like a charm. The better fitting one cost $20 though, got it on eBay. Still worth it.

Great video and truly a huge money saver. Hasn't leaked since. We do have a slightly different model (2015 SS tub Gold Series) but its essentially the same process. Everything pops out and pops back in like nothing happened. Ordered the part on Amazon for a few bucks and it came in one day. Be careful not to drop the new seal into any of the many holes present in the dishwasher because its annoying to retrieve (It can happen to anyone at any time during the process). Old seal was also difficult to remove as it was pretty much falling apart. Putting in the new seal however definitely needs some sort of lubricant be it soap or rinse aid to really get it flush (as stated in the video) while still requiring plenty of elbow grease (trust me on this one. It won't slide in dry).

Followed this to fix my leak, definitely stopped the leak. For getting the old seal out, I tried several things but eventually got it out with a corkscrew. The only issue I have now is i hear a groaning when my diverter turns. I'm waiting to see if that's the motor going bad or just getting used to its new tight-fitting grommet... Thank you for this information!!

Worked great. Took a while to find the part and order. My Kenmore Elite had differnt metal clips to push out on the back and ceiling walls instead of a screw. The diverter seal was tough and did not come out easilyt. It had a composite spring inside and metal ring on the outside. Leaking stopped immediately, and it was leaking A LOT. Hard to believe some much water leading through a small seal. Victory.

Great fix! I have a Kitchenaid KDTE304DSS0 that started leaking from the diverter valve shaft seal. The WPW10195677 part is no longer available. I ordered the TC 5.5x16x8 on amazon. Worked perfectly. The replacement is slightly taller and does not sit flush, but so far so good. I also coated the seal with plumbers grease

In case it helps anyone, there are dishwashers which look very similar to the one mentioned in the post, but where the seal for the diverter motor shaft goes BELOW the sump (you have to remove the motor from below the DW). the seal is a TC10x18x4, which I was able to buy from Bearings Canada (there are other possibilities too, it was cheaper to get it from Germany, but with a longer shipping time obviously)

Many thanks for the video and the recommended part. Although my Kenmore Elite required a little different internal spray removal, it was easy with the help of your video. Like many people said, 5 minutes to take it apart and another 5 to put it back together. Something I read elsewhere here is that the grommet/seal may be installed upside down by the factory and that is why they fail after only a few years. My seal had the metal spring facing up into the dishwasher, it failed after about 4 years. When I installed the replacement seal I made sure the spring was facing down, away from the water inside the washer. Hopefully this one will last more than 4 years. No leaks so far.

I've found a lot of conflicting information about which way to install the grommet. Is yours still leak-free? It just makes sense to keep the spring facing away from the water inside the dishwasher. The grommet doesn't appear to have any taper so I assume spring-side down would be better in the long run.

@@subculture63 That's the wrong way,the open(spring side) always goes where the liquid is, you install it with the flat side down first..The spring is stainless steel so it won't rust.

This worked great for my Kitchen Aid. The spray arm assembly was a little bit different but the concept is the same. I bought a set of cheap dental pick tools at Harbor Freight and the grommet came out easily. The grommet has a little spring in a groove as does the replacement. Thank you so much!!

Hi there, You've done a good job explaining the steps in this process but it would be helpful if you could get a helper or a tripod to better center the image in the frame. It's really helpful to your viewer if the important parts don't go in and out of the picture as you do the work. This kind of framing makes your presentations look a lot more professional and help to really boost that subscriber count. Keep at it and good luck!

Thanks Scott! Nice video & nice fix. The grommet replacement did the trick without any need to pull the dishwasher (6 year old Whirlpool model wdf750saymo). I replaced the "no longer manufactured" grommet part # wpw1095677 per David Olsen (thanks,David!) with AVX Seals (avxseals.com) shaft oil seal TC5.5X16X8 ($3.30 & USPS $1.82 shipping, arrived TX in 3 days). The grommet was thicker than the original part (maybe original was worn down & why it was leaking?) but it pushed all the way in/fit nicely and best of all no more leak!

Love your video very well explained. I ordered the part TC 5.5x16x8 from bearingscanada.com and dental picks from amazon.ca only to discover my KitchenAid KUDE40FXSS5 DOES NOT UTILIZE THIS WASHER/GROMMET. This model of dishwasher has an integrated grommet on the UNDERSIDE of the sump. The grommet is glued in and can’t be removed. I had to buy a new sump ($150 Can). But now installed and leak fixed. even with the now extra washer and dental picks the cost was $350 cheaper than the repair guy quoted to fix! Thanks again for the excellent videos.

Thanks for video, ordered the super gold seal on Amazon, in the meantime used kitchen grade white grease “petrol gel” and loaded the hole up with it, added 2 of the tiniest rubber o rings which would go over the cheep plastic motor shaft. I did this repair today. First things first, I tried prying out the grommet using a screw driver...it didn't budge. Went and got the pick tool and it worked like a charm. Second, when I pried out the grommet with the pick tool, the grommet jumped out and fell into the hole at the bottom. I tried fishing it out with the pry tool and then with my finger but it kept getting away from me. This led me to curse, yell and get really upset. I took some time off and realized that the hole it fell into shoots water out to feed the sprayer arms etc. With the sprayer arm and white rotating disk thing off, I turned the machine on until the pump started, opened the dishwasher door and, as expected, the lost grommet had shot out and was resting on one of the heat coils. If you lose the grommet down the hole, do the same thing and don't get upset thinking you'll have the take the machine out to fish it out.

Thank you everyone! I'm in Canada, I got free shipping using the FREESHIP coupon code from the American site (valid when you order a quantity of 5, cheaper than getting 1 shipped from the Cdn site mentioned below) and did the repair on my Kitchenaid KDTE204ESS1 dishwasher using TC 5.5x16x8. I found I had to take the dishwasher out and remove the diverter motor (only 2 screws holding that in) to get the old rubber grommet out, as I tried from inside the dishwasher first and it wasn't budging and I didn't want to risk damaging the sump housing. After taking out the diverter motor it was a piece of cake to remove the old grommet with a medium flat screwdriver and gently prying up through the hole of the grommet. Thanks again everyone saved myself $428 plus tax I was quoted by the repair guy to replace the entire sump. Running a cycle now, so far so good with no leaks!!!

I wish I would have read these posts before replacing the whole sump assembly. To make matters worse I still have a leak. I rechecked every thing I had to touch to replace the sump and it all looks good. I really wish I could just see where the water is coming from (i even tried an inspection mirror) but I can't. My next guess is to replace the grommet W10538166 Motor to sump seal . Any advice would be appreciated.

Great video, and easy to follow but allow me to add a cautionary note. I had difficulty getting the old grommet out but I eventually did, and the replacement part was easily added yet my leak continued. In my struggle to remove the old one, I ended up damaging the housing, which is a much more expensive repair. I would just add that if you don't have a tool for removing the grommet, it might be easier to just call a repairman.
