In this video, Lloyd teaches you a hard figure skating turn right from your home! Brackets are a turn the enters on one edge and exits on another while also changing your skating direction. The easiest way to think of them is to think about doing a 3 turn, but then turning the opposite way, but staying on the same pattern.
In some countries, this move is actually translated as a counter 3 turn, which makes more sense than the term "brackets".
This figure skating turn is not an easy one and is classified as a difficult turn by @Skating ISU
I decided to make this figure skating tutorial video because there is no reason the ice rinks being closed should halt your figure skating progress. There is so much great work that can be done from home, that by the time you get back onto the ice, your figure skating will be on another level!

I would love to. One of them got in touch with me recently about it actually! I hoping we can make it work out. I think I'm going to order some freestyle slalom skates to try. I love doing fast footwork on the ice, so those seem right up my street!

@@IceCoachOnline I've modified my slalom skates to make them feel much more like figure skates. I moved the frame back over half a inch, put a 3/8" heel lift between the frame and the boot. Also am running the biggest wheel diameter differences I could find. i.e. 68-80-80-68mm wheels on each skate, in order to get enough rocker to be able to pivot on either of the two middle wheels. This all made the balance points roughly similar to my ice skates, good enough that I can switch between them and work on the same fancy figures stuff after only a minute or two of warmup.

Seriously, I've been involved in figure skating for 43 years (I'm old). I have NEVER had someone explain a bracket to me in such clear, concise language that makes so much sense! When you retire from competitive skating, you really need to think about coming to the DC area to coach.....we have some AMAZING programs here, and you would be such an asset! (And I'm sure your fellow ice dance countryman [Jonathon Hodgkinson] would love to have you here, too!)

Thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it 🙂 if people are finding this useful, I can make more cover all the other turns. Funny you should mention coaching, Anastasia and myself are actually looking for an ice rink to settle down in and start teaching! Is Jonathan in DC now? He was living in florida last time I spoke to him. I haven't seen him for years!

I think sometimes it can be great to learn the theory from home and then apply it to the ice after! That way you don't have to get cold listening to someone to explain what to do, they can just correct what you're doing wrong while you try! Then you end up getting better value for money with your ice time and lesson. Thanks for the nice comment ❤️

You can't even imagine how useful such videos are! There are videos where someone who can do e.g. brackets perfectly explains how to do them on ice: on high speed, deep edges, etc. But it actually is not of much help to get me started. My first bracket is not going to be like that. It's essential to have an understanding of how exactly my body should move beforehand, otherwise I'm going to waste my precious time on ice. And this is perfect for that. I have actually been doing exercises close to what you showed in this video and now I can more or less do brackets on ice. I request rockers and counters. I want to learn them but they seem intimidating to get started.

Wow tbh i thought i knew empirically what a bracket is but i never had any explanation except it was the other side of the 3 turn lol I'm probably not the only one - we didn't started as kid if we are here - so even basic skills tutorials are welcome, especially explained like this!!! I was wondering where your elegance on the ice came from but now i'm figuring that is from your perfect technic ;) Quick question, all dance blade came with a 7" rocker? (i might need others skate for dance)
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 жыл бұрын
I glad to hear you enjoyed learning this! I was hesitant to post up this kind of content, as I wasn't sure how people would respond to such a specific move like this. But if people find this helpful I can do more like it. I can cover any turn you can do on the ice in detail like this. If people drop a load of comments requesting it, I'll do it for sure! I'm going to embarrass myself here and say I'm not sure what the rocker is on a dance blade. What I can tell you is that is thinner than a freestyle blade and shorter at the back. I don't actually skate in dance blades anymore, I use gold seal freestyle blades. They are more secure for lifting my partner in shows. What thinner blades blades feel a little more manœuvrable and agile. But the difference is small, perhaps only making a difference at the very highest level of skating. The different blade length makes a bigger difference. The longer blade does not allow you to get your feet as close together as the shorter dnace blades when performing choctaws, mohawks etc. This means they are not suitable for ice dance test and competitions as you will lose the levels on your technical elements. If you're skating just for fun, this doesn't matter however.

 Oh thanks you so much!!! Idk about other people but imo 3 turn and bracket are a big part of the elegance on the ice; jumps are more about athleticism, spins well with a wrong posture it's impossible and ina bauer and co are just keeping a posture - if i may. And artistry is still a mystery for me 🤣 (It's the shape of the blade, gold seal - 8" - are flatter than coronation - 7" - so a lil faster, don't worry i'm a nerd lol) I was asking you that because i skate on edea fly with p99. Idk about the boot stiffness as i can squat well - i'm asian it help lol. But about the blade, the length is the same as dance blades and since i've taste 8" blade i really love it. And i really don't want to go back to 7" =( I didn't knew about the 3mm blade, it's the same as hockey though ;) I've thought about gold seal too - people will hate me even more tho - but i love to skate and the feeling which come with so much... The lack of holliday might solve this question anyway lol And again, thanks you so much for your time and what you do for the skating community =)
