During Hanyu's retirement speech, he kept emphasizing that he decided to turn to be a "Professional Athlete". In the livestream room, we saw so many fans kept asking, what does that really mean? You might be surprised by the terms, but Hanyu was an amateur athlete! Basically most of the athletes competing in the Olympics are amateurs. Do you know the difference between amateur vs professional athletes? We decided to make a video to explain it all.

I know that every country that registers in a competition has to pay a sum of money for the registration of each athlete. Instead - it seems to me - that the amounts with which only the medalists (!!!) are awarded are very small. Thus, in order to pursue a career, athletes must rely on family and sponsors: to pay for trainers, choreographers, costumes (generally handmade creations by designers), plane flyes etc.

My main worry is that for every performance, we’ll have to either wait a long time for any professionally recorded videos, or have to only see fan videos if any. At least with competitions, we see ISU official videos or from sports programs from tv networks, usually the same day or the next, with perfect clarity and up close. What will those of us outside of Japan see now??
@moma-b
@moma-b Жыл бұрын
Professional means he has to make money. That means there will be carefully, professionally recorded shows for you to buy all over the world. With English sub, etc. He will be a product to buy. No worries! 😉 I actually expect better content coming up exactly because of that. "TAKE MY MONEY, YUZU!!!" 😁

I think this was part of the reason he went pro was so that he had total control of his brand. It was the JSF and the ISU that was dictating his shows and merching for years and not considering his overseas fans. I have no doubt there have been a lot of opportunities that they wouldn't let him do. JSF wanted all the merching just for Japan fans because not only did they get a cut of everything Yuzu (10%), there was also the sales taxes paid. I think he wants to stream his shows globally as a pay per view, he knows he has millions of fans who aren't Japanese. JSF has been very stingy with sharing Yuzu outside Japan. He wants to go global.
@FigureSkatingFan
@FigureSkatingFan Жыл бұрын
Ngl it's one of our thoughts as well, as there are many livestreams available for ISU competitions, but pro events normally won't have such luxury, and very hard to get tickets.. But well, maybe Hanyu can change that! Let's hope 😀🙏

I am 45 years old with very little set aside for retirement at this point. I have always been curious about the stock market and have witnessed some people who played the game right and retired early because they used the stock market. When I ask them, most said that they invested very little to start with, but their portfolio grew. I do have a significant amount of capital that is required to start up but I have no idea what strategies and direction I need to approach to help me make decent returns

Speaking about boyband of figure skating 😂 actually I'm impressed by the male troop of 7 in the FaoI opening, Shizuoka. They're of the same height, bodyline, and all are Olympians, mostly medalists, even coaches and choreographers. But of course we can only see them in live show during off competition. They'll be busy during competitive season. And that's why I expect Yuzu to start his company and produce outstanding ice show world tour and TV Shows that can be subbed and aired globally. And maybe restart World Professional Championship that stopped in 2000. The last time I saw Disney on Ice tour in my country was in mid 90s 😪, now expecting FaoI to SEA

I think the fact that figure skating is so heavily bounded by the old rules of the Olympics is what made "turning pro" carry such a different connotation compared to other sports. Generally in other sports turning pro means you are enduring the gruesome competitions while trying to make money to support yourself at the same time. But in figure skating, it means you are finally able to make money while being liberated from the immense pressure of competitions. Honestly I still find this difference weird because nowadays full time professional athletes can compete in the Olympics in most sports. So is figure skating as a sport perhaps stuck in the past a little?
@jjk4891
@jjk4891 Жыл бұрын
Probably financial problems. Figure skating is pretty popular but not enough to make big bucks like soccer, baseball, or football. There are rarely “teams” that have sponsors to pay the skaters for each game. I know Japan has a pro-athlete system, where you technically are an employee of a company during your career, but I don’t think most other figure skaters or countries do that.

@benbailey159bb

A better explanation: In the past amateur meant elite competitive skaters who were not allowed to earn money. Professions were skaters who skated for money (shows etc) and were not allowed to compete at ISU events. Amateur and professional distinction ceased to exist as of 1994 Lillihammer Olympics. They finally dropped the stupid not allowed to earn money rule. This resulted in many famous skaters coming back and competing at that Olympics. It's also why nowadays skaters are able to earn money doing shows and events like Japan open which they couldn't before.

From sponsorships, prize money (Small amount compared to expenses), ice shows and i'm not really sure if there is a national federation fond like in Russia and the U. S, actually the JSF takes a kind of commission from his earnings, but I suppose that also in the national competitions there is prize money. I also heard that after the tragedy in 2011 Shizuka Arakawa 😊 gave him some financial support, but I don't know if it was a gift or loan. Edit: i want to add that although he is financially settled now, it was difficult in his early years, that was true for him and many skaters cuz this sport is among the most expensive but unlike others it doesn't reward much financially since it's not the most famous sport in the world. It is not common to see commercials with children skaters either, well I think the Honda sisters are an exception.

The majority come from CM (commercial advertisement). According to some source, his income in 2018 or 2019 is over 10M US dollars. Average income after 2018 winter Olympic is around 5-6M US dollars per year. The $$ he earns in competition might the the least. Other income including ice shows. He also played in a movie, and sometimes invited to some TV programs. He got long term (permanent) sponsorship from ANA.

@@kadovax6567 Yuzuru got 2 Olympic Gold, Nathan got one. Some ice show paid $$ according to number of medals you got. Olympic weight more I guess. (sorry, I am not the paying party, just a guess based on rational logic!). Nathan is very good at jump, he got high score in the competition. But, the recent ice show (star on ice) he went did not sell very well. The party organization it need to gave discount to get in audience. I respect Nathan's jumping techniques, but in terms of ice show or pro, most people want to see artistry. That's why Yuzuru's ice show was so successful. You may tell by the number of viewers who watched their programs in Olympic channel - Yuzuru is not champion this year, but his long or short program has the highest viewer number. The Olympic Gala video posted by Olympic Channel - 99.99% of the comments mentioned only one person - Yuzuzu Hanyu. No one else. Please check this by yourself. Yuzuru is handsome, he got a lot CM opportunities. What ISU favors does not meant what the audience favors. May be it's a fair world - Nathan got the medal, while Yuzuru got the audience :(.
