Do you learn English with movies? In this English lesson I show you how to use a scene from Avengers: Endgame to improve your English speaking and English pronunciation. You will learn about English speaking elements like reductions and contractions. When you use movies for learning English you have the opportunity to mimic and learn from native speakers. I have developed a terrific method for your learning over the past 10 years and I’ll show you exactly how to learn English movies’ power for improving your speech. We will look at a scene with Robert Downey Jr. from Avengers: Endgame together and walk through everything that the speakers are doing. When you use this approach to learning English with movies you begin to see each of the components that make American English sound the way it does. And you can watch all summer long as we take a new movie each week to give you more and more opportunities to learn English movies and improve your English speaking. And please download the free audio lesson that goes with this series. The link is above! Let’s get started! I hope you enjoy it.

OMG, few teachers on this planet ever teach us about the pronunciation in sentences, the way that native speakers speak English sentence by sentence is quite different from what we learn as non-native speakers, most of us speak english word by word, like a robot, and that leads to our poor listening when communicating with native speakers. Good Job!

hey!you're my angle! here are some questions :D 1. "if you find this recording"why "find this"sounds like "finəs"? 2: "how be it"why "how"sounds like "h-AA"? "i will dream about you" why "about" sounds like "abAAt"? is it because “OW” always say“AA” in low energy in american english ? thank you so much,XD
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! 1. When the D consonant comes between two consonant sounds, you can often drop it (like he does here). 2. In lazy, very casual speech, some native speakers will allow the OW as in NOW diphthong to sound more like a quick, unstressed AA as in BAT vowel. If you were going to say the word with stress, you would definitely want to use the OW as in NOW diphthong. Thanks for your questions! :)

Thank you, Rachel. Your break-down of the video was very interesting and helpful. About "in" in " being a drift in space", I recorded it in a lower tempo (about -35% from the original) and feeled a small stop in "drif_t" when the last "t" linked to the next "in", which gave the impression that he had pronounced it all as /drɪf_tən 'speɪs/. Although /n/ was really just only like a hint of it. But the whole impression was that he had spoken the all phrase quite clearly. And I dare to give my thoughts about the next "with zero". After running in a lower tempo, it seemed that here was a smooth transformation of lips and tongue , like /w/ -> /v/ -> /z/. And that /v/ was almost like a nothing, but it worked as /ð/ if to pronounce it not through the tip of the tongue a teeth, but through the lower lip and teeth, like cockneys do. Thank you again. I like your lessons so much.

Thanks so much, before watching the analysis, I couldn't understand anything. This accent or way of talking in this movie is more difficult than so many accents. I can usually understand more than 60% of what is being said, but in this scene I got almost nothing except the last two sentences. Please do MORE videos like this.

This comment is off topic but I would like to ask you that if in the future you decide to make a video about words that are difficult to pronounce, please nclude the word "pattern". As Spanish speaker I found almost impossible to pronounce it using American pronunciation

Hello Alanood! The best way is a combination of study/practice and actually using the language with native speakers, (preferably). As far as speed goes - the more you can surround yourself with the language the faster you'll learn it. I wish there was a way to magically download a language - but till then - have fun with study and practice and practice and study! :)

Thanks Rachel. You're the best in methods! Is June and July summer in the US? It's different here. I hope it continues like this (lessons from movies) even if it's not summer there. I watch American tv shows, yes, I don't sometimes hear clearly the words--if, well, I mean, but, yes etc. I had to slow it down. But sometimes it's hard to figure out. Maybe I lack grammar skills and I have to learn new phrases.

Hi! Thanks for your comment! Just keep practicing on a regular basis and you will improve! Yes, it is summer in the US through August (and sometimes it seems to last into September).
