No not create sparks over top of batteries! They can explode!
Watch high voltage! Use insulated spark plug pliers!
When running an engine with parts disconnected, make sure you are aware of fuel systems still engaged as sparks and fuel do not mix! Never run an engine long term with ignition system parts disconnected or engine damage will occur!

Awesome explanation ❤ My car 1st plug burned 4th time 1st mechanic said carburetor issue 2nd mechanic said rings pistons problem. I found myself at night with some spark in the ignition wire while idle mode. 2 times on idle I heard some sound like dhak!! And after that misfire problem starts. After that video may be that I found ignition wire is the problem because its sparking. My car nissan sunny B13 1991.

Good to see you ! My dad's old 77 Ford is definately misfiring...and backfiring. Fire in the hole! Trying to get this beast back up n running well. I remember replacing sparkplugs in mechanics class in highschool..but that was definately a long time ago. This has made me rethink on how I approach this. Probably need new wires as well as the sparkplugs. I used some seafoam in the gas tank...and the shop i had brought ig to said it was good to go...but backfired the whole way home. Would have brought it back but it was a couple towns over....no greyound to get back 🤣

I just went through this with my Dad's 85 El Camino....so much work. Carb rebuilt, spark plugs and wires, distributor, timing, harmonic balancer, mechanical fuel pump, catalytic converter, oil pan and valve cover gaskets, etc. It was a massive amount of work but we got that beast running and back to it's former glory. Hard to tell if the issue is new from improper installation of the spark plugs or the old issue. A common issue can be the spark plug wires as they only last 3 to 5 years and are usually a tune up item. A very common issue is having the spark plug wire on the plug but not pushed on where it "clicks" when it is fully seated. Check all wires and both ends. If you push down and you hear/feel a click, then maybe that's your issue. You can get a code reader to see which cylinder has the misfire and then look up online what cylinder is which to help narrow down the issue. How tight did you make the spark plugs? New spark plugs will have instructions on how tight to install them. Try this stuff and see what you find.

Roadside service blokes kept saying "don't know why it's not working. you should send it to [local rip-off artists, and never any other suggestions]". The clip broke off the lead/wire. How does a roadside mechanic not notice a broken lead? Ovary tax strikes again How did I find out? Figured that while it was off road might change out the leads, like an old PC and its cables. I found broken leads, corroded lead, and corroded coil ignition. Am recharging the battery in preparation to see if changing these bits out is gonna help

Yeah, a good roadside mechanic should have noticed that but it happens and sometimes these things take time. I'm sorry that you have to deal with worrying whether you are getting ripped off just because your a women, that's horrible. Life's hard enough as it is. The best thing you or anyone can do is to learn how to diagnose/fix things yourself and then you can save yourself money and aggravation. Do coil packs send a signal back to the igniter computer after discharging, or the igniter just send a signal and not receive any. It’s for a motorcycle, I’m assuming it’s the same as a car, this coil is dual fire
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
No they do not. The computer allows electricity to go the coil pack which builds a magnetic field in the primary coil and when it wants to create the spark, it stops the electricity to the coil which collapses the magnetic field and induces electricity into the secondary coil and down the high tension lead to spark plug. Most coil packs are dual fire and the second spark is created in another cylinder that is wasted because it sparks when it is in the exhaust stroke which does nothing. Thanks for the watch.

Nice and clear presentation, however it did not answer my questions so I am hoping you see this and can reply with some answers. I have a 60’s car but have added an electronic points kit. No radio. The kit requires suppression wires so I have converted from solid core which had resistors on the caps. I currently have a sports coil that is getting old and am planning to replace it. I am trying to understand the cumulative effects of the various resistances (wires, caps, and plugs) and coil voltage. Is the goal to maximize voltage at the spark or aim for a sweet spot (and if so, how do I determine what that is? If it is not a “performance car” should I be avoiding sports coils? Should I be running non-resistor plugs? I have yet to find an article or video that clarifies these things. Thanks.
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 11 ай бұрын
I would say that essentially you are aiming for the hottest spark you can get so that every single power stroke is ignited fully and on time. About the only thing that would happen with excessive voltage would be wear on plug gaps and points if you had them. What car are you working on? I have a 67 Parisienne and a 68 Firebird. I have a question, so I have a 1987 Honda shadow vt700 and was trying to get a flamethrower kit but don’t like the idea of the engine having to be off for it to work. So I bought a Harley coil pack and put 12 volts from the battery to the coil with a toggle switch in between, the switch is grounded. Then for the trigger side I spliced into the Hondas coil pack trigger wire and and attached wire to the Harley coil pack with a switch in between, that switch is grounded but it’s a 2 prong switch and I wasn’t sure if it’s supposed to be grounded but I did anyways, it’s all wired correctly but with both switches off the coil should get no power, which it doesn’t, and with then off the bike starter misfiring and firing off order I think, because the front cylinder the one I spliced into wasn’t firing correctly, and it was very loud pops not like it’s usual back fire, this was more like a misfire on the wrong stroke, any advice? Am I not able to share one trigger wire and have it go to two coil packs? That’s the only thing I can think of that wires into the Honda engine and now it’s not running right :/
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Spencer. Just to be clear, are you putting on a kit that shoots flames out the exhaust pipe ( fuel injector/spark plug in pipe) or are you talking about adding an aftermarket coil called a flamethrower?
@spencerkammerman7481
@spencerkammerman7481 2 жыл бұрын
@@wayofthewrench I bought a Harley Davison dual fire coil off eBay, and have a toggle switch for the 12 volts coming from the battery to the 12v side of the coil, then spliced into the trigger wire for the Honda coil (the one for the engine to run) and routed a wire to a toggle switch, then when the trigger is on it’ll have the power from the trigger to the Honda coil also going to the Harley coil. So one trigger is supporting two coils, is that bad? I also grounded the two prong toggle switch that the trigger goes into, was I not supposed to because when I grounded it that’s when it started misfiring
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
I would say you don't want a second coil, you're just doubling up on weight and complication and for what purpose? You just have to have one perfectly timed consistent spark not 2 or a more powerful spark. If you're having misfires before the added coil, then I suggest troubleshooting/replacing your original coil not supplementing it. You also are trying to provide 12 volts to both coils now and depending on your setup, both might not be getting what they need to function properly. Yank out the Harley coil/wiring and fix the Honda parts. Good luck.
@spencerkammerman7481
@spencerkammerman7481 2 жыл бұрын
@@wayofthewrench I think I started shorting out the system because I grounded a switch that wasn’t supposed to, I grounded the trigger wire :/ so I’ll undo that but do you thing one trigger wire can signal to two coils? I just need that 3rd Harley coil to spark the plugs when I turn it on like a normal coil, other than a trigger wire idk how else to do it that’s why I spliced off the bikes engine coil wire, it was running fine until I grounded the trigger wire, the Harley coils spark plugs go into the muffler, it’s a homemade flamethrower kit that won’t require the engine to not spark it’s own fuel, it’ll be sparking a small atomized amount of fuel in the exhaust, all the kits required the CDI to not spark the engine plugs, I don’t like that, so I tried doing my own way of flamethrowing

its really hard to diagnose through messages but if your coil over plug is cracked/showing signs of electrical arcing by the crack, then it should be replaced. A good obd 2 scan tool can tell if your coil is causing a misfire in that cylinder and you can switch coils to see if the misfire code jumps to new cylinder as well. This is all if the engine runs. If it doesn't crank or start then it could be other issues.

Ok so I have a 1997 Ford f150 with a 4.6l V8 triton motor. I can not for the sake of this truck figure out how to route these wires to where the motor will stop shaking. I've checked all the plug boots and all 8 are clicked in snug. But the layout of how the wires are supposed to go so the engine runs smoothly is just not coming to me and I can't find it on the great Google.
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Try this. www.justanswer.com/ford/148ac-firing-order-1997-ford-f150-4-6-triton.html Did you touch anything else other than wires? If ya did, it could be timing off on the distributor. If the shaking was happening before you touched the wires, it could be fouled spark plug, timing, distributor cap and rotor, condensor, Fuel system weak, vaccum leak, bad coil, etc.

I have a question: i bought spark plugs and wires for my 93 dakota. The new wires are different lengths than the old ones. I thought the new wires and old wires are suppose to be equall lengths?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 3 жыл бұрын
No they are almost always different lengths because they have to reach different places on the motor. If the wires are a little longer than old wires, that is ok. Shorter may be an issue as they might not reach. Just replace one at a time so you dont lose the firing order. Start with the longest wire first (spark plug farthest away from distributor) and use the longest new wire in the new set. Then so keep going until you get to the shortest wire. Also sometimes the wires are numbered which can help if you know which cylinder is which. Hope that helps, good luck!

I found some spark plug wires, unopened. All I know is they are 7mm, and my truck takes a 7mm. There was nothing else about them on the box. How do I know they will fit my truck?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 3 жыл бұрын
There might be a part number stamped on the wire and a brand that you could look up. If not, as long as the wire can be inserted on to the terminal of the distributor and on the spark plug and actually be long enough to reach all cylinders, than they should work. I would also make sure they haven't aged out and that the rubber insulation isn't stiff or crack when flexed. Otherwise if they work, they work and besides that, they will need changed after a couple years of use anyways. Good luck with the freebie set of wires! Let me know if they work eh?

Duramax diesel engines won't have "spark plug wires" but they are going to have glow plugs and glow plug wires/power straps. Google duramax glow plug wiring diagram to find these bad boys. Next video will be on spark plugs/glow plugs my friend.

How many coils pack do you have? Are there any markings/numbers on the coil packs? On the wires? If the coil packs are different, an online Google search of your ignition system wiring diagram/cylinder numbers may be a big help.

Man...not a lot online to help. I would start by looking at the length of the spark plug wires and if they are different lengths, that will help you tell where they go. I would assume that a is 1, b is 2, c is 3, etc. but I am not 100%. Then get a cylinder diagram for which cylinder/spark plug wire is which and then attach to the coil pack. Generally number 1 is the front of the motor where pulleys are and in order to the back. Good luck!

measuring spark plug wires on a multimeter? Yup sounds right. Break in the wire.....really high resistance and no insulation with wire core touching a grounded piece of metal will be super low depending where the short is. Cheers!

Yeah you can if you doing this a lot but if your just checking one cylinder after narrowing it down from a power balance test, it's not a big deal. You just don't want to run the engine a long time like this because the fuel can wash oil away from the cylinder walls and raw fuel is going out to the catalytic convertor. Thanks for the watch and sharing your tip! Cheers!

Im not 100% familiar with that vehicle but if all of the wires are the same length/diameter then just make sure the connections match and replace them one at a time. Make sure you route them the same as the old ones and use any holding clips that were used to prevent them from touching hot exhaust parts. Cheers and thanks for the watch!

@@wayofthewrench Having values beyond the bucks is what makes an honest mechanic. My sister, in Phoenix, had an honest and "serving" mechanic for several years. He recently sold the shop and immediately it became scam-central. It is the man, the integrity in the man, that makes the landscape beautiful. In life, you need parents, dedicated teachers, a good attorney and an honest mechanic. Having a good preacher is also nice, but even less obtainable than a good mechanic!

Resistance goes up with the length of the wire. I would go to Napa and measure the length and impedance of each one. You have to check to make sure they work. Tell them you will get back to them. Then go searching for some new used wires at the local scrap parts yard. May find some gold. May require cutting and doing the ends. It's all about the ohm
