Hi Stefan - thanks for all of your programming advice! I wanted to ask if you could please do a video about what you think of programmers who need to search google for basic syntax, especially library-related stuff. I've been programming in php and python for a long time, albeit not professionally, and I still need to look up google every 15 minutes when I code, despite the fact that I feel fairly confident with the fundamentals and concepts of programming! Granted, my memory isn't the best. I'd love to see you do a video about this topic. Thanks Stefan - keep the videos coming please!

Watching your videos guided me to create my action plan. Your videos usually enlightenment me and give me so many aha! moments. Web development is a maze so easy to get lost... with various people telling you go to MEAN! No go to MERN! No go to Django the future! Then there are various people competing to teach you those stacks with LOTS of courses.. While Stefan says learn the fundamentals first (Server programming) and then from there you can expand to other technologies as they see fit. I feel bad for people starting out and only learning MEAN/MERN stacks instead of focusing on fundamentals. When you can have way more if you first focus on learning the fundamentals of Server programming, then learn PHP and then expand to JS and phython. While new Developers focus only on MEAN/MERN Node.js stacks only competing aggressively to get job in that currently smaller infant market that is been saturated by all the web development courses/Bootcamps that teach Node Stacks only. When you can start in PHP where there market is bigger with LOTS of opportunities to find a job/free lance work for small businesses. Fact is you have to learn JS anyway for PHP so on the side you can learn node.js and have access to both techologies and markets. Why limit to only JS? and wait and wait..... for "Someday" when JS is at the top and completely destroy PHP or is on the same level as PHP. When you can start in PHP now and get the rewards then learn node.js on the side have access to both markets when both markets are in the same level. Then move later to JS or move to the next Big thing. Why bet on JS when Django may be the future instead or other completely new technology? As an ex Entrepreneur in ecommerce and internet marketing for some time. I can tell you that I had no idea what node.js,Django where and I can tell you many small business owners have no idea what they are. But if you tell them about PHP CMS like wordpress,drupal,magento and joomla they will know! PHP is not going anywhere thanks to its easy to use CMS. A small business starts their business with a FREE wordpress site using woocomerce or use magento the majority will not start spending 1000$+ on a custom made in node.js site. Then after if their business becomes more profitable and start having techinical problems then they will hire a wordpress/drupal/magento/joomla specialist to build them a custom theme/child theme/plugins etc or optimize their site not hire someone to build site from scratch using MEAN stack or whatever else which in their mind changing the whole technology will damage their SEO, as well building site is not enough, they would have to pay again for custom SEO,marketing tracking system, mail forms etc etc. Most MEAN/MERN stack are to work on startup jobs not to work on most established businesses. I don't see node.js surpassing php till they offer a JS version of wordpress/drupal/Magento/Joomla with the same level of popularity. Don't limit yourself to node.js and ignore PHP/Django, work on fundamentals then learn PHP, then learn Node.js and finally Django on the side while making money and expanding your experience in real world making apps for real businesses that way you will have strong Server side programming skills and your foot in various different technologies markets or be able to easy move in the future to the Newer High paying low competition future technologies that are to come(Like machine learning,AI,face recognition web Apps)

Could you explain why runtimes for python are going to be slower than C++? To me it seems counter intuitive, if the program has to go through more code (C++) won't it take LONGER? I'm sure there's something I'm missing. Thanks!
@StefanMischook
@StefanMischook 6 жыл бұрын
Because C++ is a compiled language and Python is interpreted. In a nutshell, Python code has to be translated on the fly into code that CPU's understand, whereas C++ is pre-translated ... so it runs much much faster.

What do you think about Derek Banas languaje tutorials in KZfaq?
@StefanMischook
@StefanMischook 6 жыл бұрын
That is one of the many walkthrough tutorial channels on YT. Kind of like trying to learn guitar by learning 5 songs. You really need to learn foundational core concepts first ... then you can play ANY song! Not just the 5. ... If that makes sense. So if you learn foundation programming first (as I teach,) then the project based tutorials will be 10x easier. So the steps to learning code quickly: 1. Learn core (foundational) concepts and techniques - this includes syntax. I simply call this the 'core'. 2. Do project real-world project based tutorials - I have many in my courses. You see a lot of not so real projects on KZfaq: like building a game with Python. Nobody uses Python to build shooter games. 3. Learn programming specialization and career paths. I assume most people want to take your coding skills and turn them in a career.

It's easy to get bogged down doing tons og diagrams, just iterate over them 5 times, during a release window. However, to get a good fundamental understanding, just browse some pages. www.ibm.com/developerworks/rational/library/content/RationalEdge/sep04/bell/index.html etc. The most important are probably: Usecase, Class, Package, Sequence, State, Domain, and application. However, the ones you are gonna use are Class, Package and Sequence. Maybe a touch of Usecase.

I want to start teaching my 11 yr old son programming. Allegedly they have started it at school but the lessons are so basic and the teacher doesn't know enough for me to trust it will be of much use beyond basic concepts. Although I was self taught in the 80's I would prefer him to learn from someone who knows how to actually teach. So I intend to sit down with him and help him through a proper course such as yours. For someone such as him who is very new to it, would you suggest web development or Python as a first language? I'm leaning towards Python to start with and then move on to web development. We won't have an end goal in sight other than learning basic concepts (maybe a good topic for a future video too). Thanks.

If the C languages are more data intensive...then why do they run so fast? It seems counter-intuitive. You would think the CPU could chomp up the less Python data much quicker than the C languages! Does the speed of the C languages have to do with algorithms used? What makes MORE data of C get computed faster than the less data of Python?
@EduardoLarios95
@EduardoLarios95 4 жыл бұрын
The thing is Python code is actually doing WAY more than it would imply. Python is higher-level (and by that I mean its logic is closer to human logic rather than machine logic). So the PC has to do more work to run all the extra instructions that make Python so easy to use. C on the other hand is a very "simple" language, it doesn't have all the fancy stuff Python has, it is much closer to the way the PC actually works.

This is meant to be constructive and not to come of ranty and deprecating. So there, I said it. But fundamentals are meant for absolute beginners and you are missing a lot of watch time by going too scientific. What if you were trying to learn too the Law and I was just going to start listing off things you would learn after 10-15 years in the courtroom? Less is more…
