What is the status of Greek used by Orthodox denominations. Is it just Modern Greek? Seperate question I heard a claim that Greek spoken in Cyprus is closer to Ancient Greek. Is that really true?

The New Testament of the Bible is written in Koine Greek, and many liturgical texts and prayers are conducted in the Greek language. Greek remains central to the liturgy and religious life in Greek Orthodox communities. However, the use of Greek can vary among different Orthodox denominations and regions. In other Orthodox traditions, such as the Russian Orthodox Church, Old Church Slavonic or other languages may be used in their liturgical practices. The extent to which Greek is used within these denominations may depend on factors like the specific tradition and the cultural context of the local congregation. As for the second question, indeed Greek spoken in Cyprus has retained many ancient greek types and forms.
