Here is a simple flight simulator setup which is also used by students to sharpen up on their pilot skills. This is a flight simulator that anyone can setup at home.
Why practice flying on a flight simulator? well if you saw my past video “ask a flight instructor” • What To Expect On Your... Tomas mentioned having a good number of flight simulator students who tend to learn and pick things up much quicker than the average student.
Here is everything you’ll need to setup a home flight simulator similar to the one showed in the video.
- Yoke amzn.to/2ElFGo0
- Rudders amzn.to/2GV2eOe
- Throttle Quadrant/Center console
- Radios amzn.to/2GRTnNi
- X-plane www.x-plane.com
- If you don’t already have one, get a good computer/monitor with solid state drive (for fast processing speed)

I 'flew' flight simulators for years before I finally got real and took flying lessons. Without a doubt, for me with the many hours using flight simulators, I saved 1000's of $ in lessons. I knew so much, it was just a matter of getting used to the real physics of a real plane.

In real airplanes I call it the"Bump and Grind"...thats the turbelance you feel when you are flying real aircraft!! The air around you is knocking your tin can around a lot!!...To me thats the FUN part of flying ..and the pushback you get in the controls!! 🐦 C YA!!

How did the school proved that you are knowing how to. Like did they just give you a Cessna172 and ok show us what you got?
@birreboi

@@homie3394 None of the flight sim hours were certified for 'real' flying time, so no, the flight school could not take that into account. But, sure, my flight instructor knew I had done a lot of sim hours and that made it easier for him to teach me ;-) My first TRIAL flight, I flew the plane with the instructor for a short trip. I almost landed the plane myself (maybe 80%) with the instructor helping a bit at the flare and touchdown stage. So yes, that impressed him!

Yeah it helps a lot. You do need to feel and be able to see around you better than a sim can provide for visual flight, turns on a point, stalls, etc. I did same route but im still training. You use sims, you get used to watching instruments. You hop in a plane, they cover up the guages lol irony

As someone who has played a lot of simulators over the years and recently (2 weeks ago) passed my skill test and got my PPL(A) I can confirm that home simulator flying is good for somethings and not others. I learnt in a DA40 and found glass cockpit flying very easy to get to grips with. Understanding the layout of the aircraft, familiarization etc also helped from the sim. Also using the Nav radios etc was good practice in the sim. What the sim doesn’t do so well is judging distance and landing, that you just have to do for real. I’ve tried using VR also but it doesn’t really help any more. Thanks for posting the video and happy flying

Very nice. For those wondering what kind of PC you need, my recommendation is to look for a new desktop with an Intel I-7 processor. An I-5 might suffice, but the I-7 would be a better choice. At least 8 Gbyte of RAM, preferably 16 G. Besides the monitors, the critical difference you're going to see is in the graphics card used for display purposes. I can't recommend a specific graphics card because price and performance are going to be your decisions. All things being equal, a faster graphics card will cost you more. At a bare minimum any PC will likely have a built in HDMI or DVI connection. That's only for 1 display. This is usually a modest performance graphics. The additional graphics card I recommend would provide 2 simultaneous / independent outputs for display. Expect to pay > $200 for even a modest graphics card. In all likelihood you might pay $600 for the PC with a Tbyte fixed disk and another $450 for an additional graphics board. This leaves you with another financial consideration. Do you settle on the 3rd monitor connected to the slower on board / built-in graphics or spend another $250 - $500 on another graphics card? Someone with a computer capable of playing the latest games, will likely have a machine more than capable of the performance required. If I were to just guess at a price point, and not specifically look for the best bargains I could find, a typical setup to do this right would run around $2000. That's not including monitors as well as the specific pedals, yoke, or stick. Those are separate from my answer. Don't hold me to that price. There are too many "deals and exceptions."

Here's the requirements from X-Plane's makers www.x-plane.com/kb/x-plane-11-system-requirements/ - I wonder if people can get away with less by reducing the graphics level of detail. After all, isn't it more important to get the feel of the plane with a good frame rate rather than terrain detail?

Yes yes yes.....in NASCAR AND INDY TOO!!! There are trains..ships submarine....eighteen wheeler trucks...farm equipment..tractor combines...medical human anatomy..if it moves in the air..floats on water underwater..moves on land or walks there is a stimulation for it!!! In the movie THE MATRIX..you could "jack" in and hook up a program to your brain to fly helicopters or jets in a matter of seconds!!! That is probably being done in somebody's lab or garage;)...right now!! Fiction today... REALITY TOMORROW!!!! Great video!! I gotta go get back to my Sim room flying a 777 in the rain landing at DF/w...got it on pause. to make this comment!!! C YA!!! 🐦 SIMMERS UNITE!!! 🐦

I was trying to sort that exact ? out too, @Mission Control. I am wanting to have a system that speeds up my training for Private, Now that 2 -3 years has passed, has anyone learned what's the best way to jump in, I can't take the time at this moment to build a bunch of stuff, but I want to be way ahead of the lessons, which will reduce costs, time, etc...Can anyone here please advise? I am a businessman, zero fought time, but been in many many friends and clients single and a few duals, SR22, C172, Piper Saratoga, C-90 King air, etc...I want to use my evenings overly educating myself, because I can't start "real fight training" for another year. I guess I would like to know as much as possible (and im learning a lot here on YT) but now thats its March 2022, is there an option to buy a small package, or can I use all my various Monitors, is anyone selling off anything? Is there a place to purchase, that I seem to be unable to find, I get the idea on X, X11, $60, but what do I need within reason to go to day one, really over prepared like many of you on this thread. I don't want a garage sized build out, I do want to use it daily for multiple hours. Obviously this is a sport we all agree is calculated risks, never enough training. I am just tossing all this, in the case that somebody finds it, and had the same trouble. I understand I can build one, id rather be using time and money buying from someone, or somebody in the community who could help me build small unit. I will be flying this time next year, but I feel the more comfortable on my own time, is when I learn best. im 42, healthy, but business has me wanting my own transportation within some areas. So I will be going full on and purchasing a single piston, I also have no desire to be a professional pilot, I missed that window by 20 years, and I also fear it takes the fun out of it. Im a total av nut geek, but never really thought about a small sim. Has anyone anything to share, I agree, it appears that sims are ( in the tech day and age) are all over. You can go big or small. I am literate in PC/MAC but Ive never played a single video game on purpose. I just never even as a kid. So im bot a gamey type, no offense, I guess my questions are too many. if you have a part or a whole set up, or have done this before, I would adore a private or public message, I would pay for all this, I just don't know where to start. I want to be top tier instrument and dual engine rated fast, and fly a lot once I do. Like if this set up here, in the video was able to be purchased or built, I would love to know that person and get it going. Or advice could be A- B - C = Easy. I have monitors and Mac and iPads, all that junk, I don't know best place to get a simple instruction set up. If I could start training in real planes now, that would be best, I likely would not need or desire any of this, but gas is going up...badly...anything is helpful, if you have nothing pleasant or appropriate for the comment, id ask you to please refrain. Old post, not here for drama or anger, I have asked on multiple platforms the same. I will start by purchasing some software. Respectfully appreacite ANY IDEAS. I wish I knew how to piece all this together and the time and money to make it crazy cool USER FRIENDLY, PRACTICAL, AFFORDABILITY, be that a retired chap, with the know-how, or ideas on sites that may have an easy kit to put together. I will keep trudging, but im open to any and all ideas. My family (respects) my love for aviation, it has finally become more practical (west to central to east) TEXAS to fly yourself. Many Thanks in advance, no bad answers, thats why I threw a ton of ideas out. Don't hate, just give facts and info professional, one to another. Im sure im not the only one who didn't know which direction to go. Sincerely, SK

Always puzzling to me how little knowledge of the sim world experienced real world pilots have. I started on sims getting into flying and what they are saying about speeding up your training is not a lie. Then again I’d had probably over 2000 hours flying in X-plane before starting training. I can tell you though I never struggled in my landings. Sims are fun help, and you can fly IFR with controllers without the rating 😉

Yes, it gets you used to using eye hand inputs and proficient at knowing where to find and interperet flight attitude and instruments. It would be most beneficial to mimic the dash of the aircraft you are flying as much as possible. Many training aircraft have older "steam guages" as opposed to the "glass" displays in this layout. Thaey are vastly different. Unless it is a certified flight similator (which I am sure these are not) you will not be able to log this time. It may be able to be logged in a manner of ground school if you were with an instructor. So people shouln't think they can buy these parts and log flight time in their books. But it is great training nontheless.

This is what Im looking for too! Doesn't need to vibe complex. If tine allowed, building from scratch probably would be ideal. I need a second hand, but have 4 monitors or so lying around. LMK if anyone hears or sees. Its kind of tough to find online...odd...
