So guys, what do you think? Should we just be training with high level (better) guys all the time??
@L2kneel
@L2kneel 3 жыл бұрын
Hell no. The variety of training partners is the whole point of being in a fighter gym. The only way I got better wasn't by just light sparring the other new trainees.. but getting tuned up once in a while by a ammy/pro.

As a long-time competitive Judo player, it's always been standard practice to pair you up in training and competition with partners on the same of similar level of ability, experience and size. Mixing it up in freestyle/open class sessions is of course encouraged at times to get a realistic measure of your relative ability. However, with much of the technical training, uchikomi (muscle memory work) and general sparring the practice of matching people on a similar level has often been found to be more useful in allowing for consistent improvement. Unless you are the instructor, practicing with people below you too much means you won't be challenged enough or leave your comfort zone. Likewise, practicing too much with people higher than you means that you may get defeated too easily, lose confidence and not learn anything. The higher rank may decide to go easy on you which gives you a false sense of confidence or worse an oversized ego, until you get a rude awakening. Kazuo Kudo (one of the the greatest Judoka to have ever lived and nigh-unbeatable in any weight class or grade, even in his senior years) emphasized that much of his success was due to practicing with partners smaller and less experienced than himself. Following that method, I have found that it has allowed me to experiment, expand my training horizons and stay out of the comfort zone. Because of the pressure, training with higher levels too much tends to make us revert to our 'money moves' every time, rather than trying something new. Jeff, your training philosophy makes a lot of sense and your results speak for themselves. Sorry for the essay.

We put handicap to ourself in my gym, like only using one type of offense it can be only jab or only one leg kicks against less experienced partner it's a great training, not many people are willing to do so unfortunately but my coach alwyas encouraged us to give ourself handicpa to upgrade our skills and it's a great way to become more creative when we only have one type of offense to use. For skilled partner, my coach always push them to fight more experienced fighter, it's scary and we get beat up a lot before seeing adjustment but that's it's also during these moment where people decide to stay or leave...i got myself ass kicked by experienced woman fighters...back home i was like WOW never got my ass kicked like this by a woman, it's a humbling experience to see that brute forrce can't beat good IQ fighting with skills...

I agree with sparring various levels of experienced partners. One teaches new things, others help you perfect these new things. Totally with you on this one Jeff!

On top of that, sparring less experienced trainingpartners is beneficial for them. Because they need someone to learn from as well.

I would say you mostly learn from partners at your level, where you can try things but also need skills for that. But yes, finally, you need every type of sparring partner. Light ones, old ones, muscular ones..

"About 80 to 90 percent of your training should be people who are significantly of a lower level skill level than you are and as you get into competition mode, you start rolling with guys who are your own skill level or a little better but I do believe that it is a common misunderstanding that you should always be training with people better than yourself." -John Danaher

In my experience I find that I learn more from beginners bc as I’m explaining their errors etc I begin to notice my own. You learn more from teaching than applying sometimes. That’s when something you do effortlessly you have to try to explain the how/why to someone then you begin to evaluate diff openings/counters. Sometimes it’s even difficult to explain the most simple things such as footwork or head movement bc the more you focus on something that’s second nature to you, you take it down to building blocks in order to teach your partner and you both walk away with better understanding

Beginners learn from someone better, then teach other beginners as they become more experienced. That's how knowledge is passed down. Jeff, the dude is a nobody - keyboard warrior at best. Don't even sweat him! Still, I appreciate you breaking down the benefits of sparring different types of fighters. I'm a Jujitsu beginner and I rolled with a blue belt in class today. He was so intense - he put a level of "realness" in my training. I was frantically searching my brain for memories of how to survive. I enjoyed it so much. I honestly believe no knowledge can be transferred if everyone just trains with people better than them.

Anyone that has anything negative to say is simply just projecting their internal world into the physical. Which to me, that means you haven't faced the enough adversity to know what it takes to truly grow and learn (or you don't learn from your adversity). So instead they judge. Because it's easy to judge. It's not easy to look at yourself and see that you need work, but it's absolutely necessary. Jeff, you have done so much to get to this point. Places people would only dream of (Not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually). Keep doing what you're doing brother. You're a blessing for people that are open enough to see it. For those that don't, welp they just need to reassess their priorities.

Good reaction to the comment. You handled it with class and I completely agree! Higher level fighters pushes you to elevate your game, while (as you say) lower level fighters gives you the opportunity to try new things and develop your game. Sparring lower level fighters also helps them in the exact same way as just noted for yourself, as you then are a higher level fighter for them which gives them the opportunity to elevate their game.

I agree. But dunno why he have those comments. Maybe he didn't watch other videos of you sparring with more experienced fighters. Thanks for the contents jeff. Me and my friend is learning a lot from you. Specially this covid times, since gyms are closed in our country and we only spar with each other.

100% agree! i spar in my boxing class with the teachers and other students, so i score almost nothing against the first and its more of a draw or close win sometimes against the latter. But i also train some absolute beginners in a park once per week and when i spar them it doesnt only build up my ego again, because i actually see my skilllevel, i also develop my skills because i see now certain details in my technique, which i couldnt see while being super focussed on not getting smashed by dangerous opponents. And that new knowledge will help me again in my matchups vs better opponents. Rinse and repeat.

Talking about just the video aspect of it. I am watching to learn. I need to see what it takes for the technique to succeed. Who is winning/losing/better/worse is irrelevant because I think a lot of us watch to just add something to our own game. Something I think gets lost but helped me was watching little stuff like, where do you hold your hands at different distances. There is so much professional content, but none of the joes who throw on the gear once a week so fundamental little things don't get discussed.

No because like you said you will not improve based on the confidence factor of getting beaten up and not being able to perform your move s as you wish, like you said. No matter what level you're at, you should be able and willing to spar all levels of fighters. Beating up lower level fighters will elevate them as well, as long as they don't try to jump into HEAVY sparring aka fighting elite level fighters as lower level fighters. You have the best MMA channel on YT, I've said this for years now, mainly because you are willing to show you getting your arse kicked by better guys ALL THE TIME. Showing the failed attempts of techniques is something most martial artist never show because they always wanna look good. Not you brother ! Keep it up

Jeff is right. I think sometimes people misunderstand the purpose of learning martial arts. You learn martial arts to be able to defend and build muscle memory against less experienced assailants. For the few encounters that you may come across in life you need to be able to combat the unorthodox attacks that less experienced assailants use. If you are only fighting people that are better than you that use feints, professional footwork, and complicated attacks, you lose sight of what may actually happen in a street fight. Your brain will anticipate actions that professional experienced fighters use rather than the normal attacks of less experienced fighters.

Floyd Mayweather mostly sparred local guys during his championship fight camps, Tom Brady mostly does a few passing drills before a big game, Venus and Serena play a very low energy game of tennis before a big match. We're both students of Firas Zahabi and he always preaches volume over intensity. Especially when you're really exprineced in your sport
