The way we talk to ourselves and others has a powerful effect on our mental health. Our tone can shape how we perceive the world, as well as how other people perceive us. Dr. Cloud explores the psychology and neuroscience behind how tone works on our brains and moods, and discusses the various types of tones that exist. It is important to be mindful of our tones both with ourselves and those around us in order to create healthy relationships based on mutual respect. By understanding the power of tone, we can start making conscious decisions about how it affects us so that we can become more emotionally aware individuals.

I set a really big goal a few years ago to hike the whole Pacific Crest Trail, and I managed to make it all the way from Mexico to Canada. Something interesting I learned while prepping was that most people quit not because of the physical toll of hiking, but because of the mental strength it takes. And sure enough, I saw it happen. I'm not that traditionally athletic, but my self talk is overall pretty positive and gracious, but I saw people who were in beast mode athletic shape who quit because they were so hard on themselves. Of course other factors like financials and injury play a part, but I was amazed how truly important talking kindly to myself was.

Thank you for this message! As you perfectly said, “tone is a powerful force. “ For me, tone is an big indicator of where the speaker is coming from emotionally. If I’m having a hard day, a harsh tone can make my walls go up immediately. All of us can benefit from paying attention to our own tone. It’s great that you’re bringing awareness to the issue of tone. We all can control our own tone. For those of us who are married a friendly tone can make a huge difference in a positive way. ❤ Harsh tones usually push others away. Love the image of the mother and baby. Yes, tone communicates more than words. 😊

Thankyou for all your work. So very very helpful. Emotional tone so significant . And the self tone going on in our head ... set up from childhood, and other sources...quite a big issue. But working on it. Reminded of the verse that ssys"love others as you lovd yourself!!...Methinks if we get the head stuff tight the relational stuff will come more naturally. Awesome to be learning new things

Watched this again . How do you turn it around to speak with a good tone. A video on that would be helpful.

Handwrite 1 Cor 13 love section in the Bible. Doing this at the start of my day (and on tough days, handwriting it more than once throughout the day) INSTANTLY changed how people received me--they responded to me positively! It was the weirdest and coolest thing EVER. I'm 46 now, and God had me start that at approx age 23. I still do it. There is INHERENT power inside the Word of God that brings about a type of effortless change.

When your spouse raises his voice for “emphasis” and then is defensive when you state don’t shout at me and proceeds to continue to shout explaining “it’s for emphasis”, this is really helpful at understanding what is driving this…on both sides of the conversation and communication factors! Thank you for breaking this down!

Henry !! Glad I found your Y T Channel. Miss you guys... attended a Changes That Heal Seminar in Pasadena that you put on many years ago. Simply Awesome... never saw a guy play a trumpet without a trumpet before that. You were a blast... good times... good memories. Thanks for all you do... jus' like Steve told me once... You (meaning me) have made a difference. The kindest words I ever heard. I had written a letter in support for N.L. when Christianity Today wrongly went after you guys. All of this said... Great Message. I needed it hear it. I've been strugglin' with "grumpiness" lately... perfect timing. Jus' feel worn out... blah... blah... blah... Anyway Happy to Subscribe... as again... YOU and your team have made a difference... !! Much Love in Christ... and Thumbs Up !!

Yes, happiness and feelings are the factors marriages fail. Happiness and feelings are good but when you have hard circumstances in life, unrealistic expectations make marriages fail.
