Uploaded again for a guitar close-up.
Advanced level song. I recommend having done some other finger picking tunes before tackling this one. In a nutshell though, the thumb plays strings 6, 5 and 4 (E, A and D), Index plays string 3 (G), Middle plays string 2 (B) and Ring plays string 1 (High E). Check out the PIMA system for more info.
I listened to the song a lot to fill in the gaps from the Justin Guitar video that I started this song from.

this is definitely one of the better attempts at this song, are you plucking with your nails or flesh parts of your fingers my speaker is too poor to be able to tell, elliott nearly exclusively used the flesh parts

I got all the chords down but I need help with the picking. What fingers do you use for the picking pattern and if you had any tips that would be great.

Hey mate, I'm using the pima system which means the thumb does strings 6, 5 and 4. Index does string three, middle string two and ring string one. When the strumming starts, keep using your thumb for bass notes and the nail of your index finger for downward strums (think gently brushing down). Then use the pad of your index finger for the upward strums (more of a flicking motion). Doing some Travis picking exercises would definitely help too. 👍🖐🎸

bar 22 is interesting, ive not sure if theres a hammer on there id have to check

It's really hard to tell, it's sort of like those audios that change depending on what words are being displayed - the whole green needle or brainstorm thing haha

your first bar (technically second but idk if that drone is an anacrusis or should even be counted in the tab if not shown) is wrong, you go to 2 on the a string (not 0 on the e string) on the last pluck

That first bar technically shouldn't be there, but it just makes it easier when editing the video

Thank you my man! Glad to be of help. I strum with just the pointer, using the nail for down strums and fleshy part for ups.

bar 11 is wrong, you missed a hammer on that mimics the intros, 0 on e to 2 on e

Is that for the D chord in bar 11?

@@TheGuitarDojo I'm not sure what he means but concerning that D chord on bar 11, it feels and sounds more correct to me when I play is like this: (on the last four notes) though I may be wrong -----0 --3--- ----2- -0---- -------- --------

@@that_fellow_espresso6242 Yes that's right, the last semi-quaver of bar 11 is an open 1st string, but because the next chord is E is imminent, I play that as I'm transitioning chord changes D-E rather than a Dsus2 shape as it it's faster.

"I listened to the song a lot to fill in the gaps from the Justin Guitar video that I started this song from." look, these youtubers are great for simpler songs but once it gets complex they spew out garbage consistently. instead, try to find someone who specifically covers that artist and always listen to their cover before learning it to sus it out. i can send you better resources that are specifically for elliott smith stuff if you want.

Yes if you could send some Elliott Smith resources my way that would be mega, thank you! Justin Guitar made a point in his video about how his interpretations not being100% correct, and so it was a fun challenge trying to figure out by ear what he plays on the track. I want to do more Elliott Smith tracks soon, so it's all good experience.
