Learning to sail is an exciting journey. However, grasping the basics without expert instruction can lead to frustration. Here's a short step-by-step guide to understanding the wind, the sails, and the points of sail. This clear instructional video is the best explanation of the basics of sailing.
There are three main points of sail: upwind (close-hauled), reaching (beam reach), and downwind (running). Understanding these points is crucial for controlling your boat effectively. Close-hauled is when you sail as close to the direction of the wind as possible. Reaching involves sailing across the wind. Running is sailing downwind with the wind at your back.
Before setting sail, grasp the concept of wind direction and its impact on your boat. You'll need to pay attention to the wind's behavior, as it will dictate your course. Start by observing flags, ripples on the water, and the direction of smoke if present. This awareness will guide your decisions while sailing. 45 years ago I bought a 25 ft sailboat as my first house. I paid 400 dollars for it. Taught myself to sail in the Indian River in Florida. Wound up sailing to the Bahamas and on to Haiti. Now that I am retired I am going to do it all again.

I’ve sailed many times, not a pro by any means, but comfortable enough. Had a small “cat” as a kid, just on lakes. Learned to sail thru trial and error...mostly error. This is a very good explanation and this man would be an excellent teacher I believe, seems very knowledgeable and patient, wish he could give me lessons.

What was my ah-ha moment was when I learned that, except when running, the wind doesn't blow the sails, it sucks. The sails are just vertical airplane wings and when the wint is blowing across them it draws the boat forward. It's a lift affect.

Best explanation I've seen on points of sail. Break it down to simple, then show how it actually works without getting caught up in lingo - close haul, close reach, etc., which just confuses beginners. Sailing is about how much wind do your sails need to move you forward. If you have too much, back off, or make the sail area smaller (reef.) It's that simple. Now seamanship is different, both for sailing and motor yachts. That takes time, study, and experience. But if you can get your boat moving efficiently with the wind, you can work on seamanship over time. Well done!

Those little boats with the sails position drawn on them is the single best thing I’ve seen on any learning to sail video. I’m picking up a CLC Passagemaker dinghy today as my first ever boat….. you can count the times I’ve been on a boat on one hand and that includes ferries 😂. So pumped to get on the water it’s always been a dream of mine to sail and finally I’m going to have a crack at it. Thanks for the great content!

Keeping things simple and relevant when learning will enable you to grasp the basic quickly. The skills of seamanship will follow on. If you have a dream, if you’re bold enough to have a dream, make sure you live it. Sailing can do this. It’s magical.

@@itsk3v well I have a trailer for my boat so I’m winter I turn it upside down on the trailer and tarp it well. Just jump in and don’t look back! Buy a boat that’s ready to go with all the rigging and get sailing! I have since bought a second boat now slowly getting into bigger boats! Cheers

Thank you. That was a good straight forward lesson and not overwhelming with too much info. I'll remember that. I bought a book yesterday about How to Sail and spent a couple hours last night reading through what looked like the main points. After completing the emergency chapter, I went to bed with eyes big as saucers, haha. So now I am here and going to watch some more. I wish I had a boat. Oneday!!

You my friend make it so easy to understand, I started reading a book and that it the absolute worst way fir me to learn. I get very tired very fast reading and only comprehend half of it. But…. When I did my diving course ai was 49 years old and because of the awesome way Padi taught in their books I aced it right away, on my written 50 question exam I got 1 wrong. So I believe if someone can make it easy like you do here I can pick this up very easy.

I have the urge to relate how I learned to sail. But first some background - I am not a swimmer - I grew up beside a windy rough harbour - I saw many yachts capsizing and needing to be assisted - so sailing equals swimming in my mind. So I never got a yacht. But I visited the seaside at a much calmer location on a swelteringly hot summer day. A young man had many little sail-boats which were somewhat more complex and bigger than a surfboard. I negotiated the hireage of one boat on the condition he taught me to sail. So this little boat was placed in the tide at the water's edge. I sat in it as instructed. He have a huge heave and this boat with me left the shore. He shouted - "that board sticking up in the middle - push it down!" I complied. A puff pf breeze hit the sail, the boom rapidly snapped across necessitating I duck really low. Simultaneously the rudder lever snapped across too. So I pulled in on the rope and grabbed a hold to steady the rudder. Another puff and somehow the boat moved forwards - then it was a matter of adjusting things - and soon I was heading forwards reasonably efficiently and heading out to sea. I had no instruction how to reverse course. My solution was to bring it into wind - the boat would stop -the wind would drive it backwards and manipulation of the rudder enabled me to go ahead in a different direction. Later I would learn to Jibe, but back then I was shy of that - I was recalling how the boom can cross from one side to the other in cranium menacing fashion. Soon I was getting along fine. Then I spotted a 40' sloop which had grounded on an outgoing tide. As the tide ebbed, he heeled over more and more. I circled him for a while and that really annoyed the man, so after a while I took the boat back to its owner. After that I was not shy of hiring sail contraptions and found catamarans wet but exciting. Soon I was jibing nd had learned much about the water. The only serious problem was a passenger I took out on a catamaran - he went loopy - crazy and capsized us far from shore - remember I can't swim and found myself in the tide under the sail. The mast eventually pointed to the centre of the planet. So choose your passengers well.

@@Ellis01234567890 Yes, that is exactly what happened. In jibing, I told him to go to one side but he laughed and went to the other, and over we went. I could never have imagined he would, but we were out in the harbour near the heads out to the open sea. One has to be loopy to do what he did. It was a basic 14' catamaran. After righting it, I took him directly to shore. I never took him out again. Thanks for your reply. I'll look up his contacts if you want a swim. :-)

@@Ellis01234567890 Look, sailing is fantastic and I recommend you try it if you can. I grew up watching and afraid to do it, but as I wrote, it happened. And the way it happens, even learning the way I did - not ideal. But the yacht gives you some strong hints when the breeze puffs and any loose tiller or rope start doing things. Just restraining them and controlling them and we amaze ourselves - fancy that, its moving. Wear old clothes that offer sun protection and some warmth - the spray wets you - wind chill and all that. As for me, I am old and land-locked now - so I can only enthuse others and warn them to check the psychiatry of any intended crew.

In 26 now and trying to make smart investing decisions to be able to enjoy my life and not have to work 60+ hours a week. It will be 4 or 5 years before I am able to actually learn to sail properly but for now I'm enjoying learning the theory as that I can do from my laptop and reading books.

Hello Mark, I do know my terms for sailing but I do think you are right about that the terms dont matter much if youre a beginner. Its better to think about what you do than what you call it. Like learning a language. You need to learn what to say before you learn how to optimise the pronounciation. Your table illustration was very smart as well, some other people waste 10 minutes explaining how to angle the sails while you do it within 1:30 minutes and cover everything necessary. As a beginner all you need (always) are the basics, and the basics only. Details like the right words or in depth explanations will come later. Thank you for this instruction. Happy sailing!

I want to hike the Appalachian trail, so I decided to hike it two weeks a year, cause that's the time I have. If you want something sometimes you have to be creative and make it work for you. ☮️☮️

An honest question - if the boat is moving at all, how can you know the wind speed and direction?

Get lots of indicators for wind direction including, flags, wind indicator arrow at mast top, electronic wind direction and speed displayed at helm console and by looking out of the boat, the wind makes the waves, so the wave direction is the clue. More waves more wind. Also you can feel the wind on your face and hear it too. Lots of indicators!

I'm CONFUSED on how.... sailing *into the wind* generates FORWARD MOTION????? Wouldn't it push you backwards?

Yup. If you point your boat into the wind, yes. You go backwards. But, if you point her 45 degrees off the wind and pull your sails in tight they become aero foil in shape and will drive you forward aided by the keel and rudder gripping the water and preventing excessive side slip (leeway). It’s as technical as you want to make it with high and low pressure area on the sails creating the forward thrust to drive you forward. Or. You believe that sailing is magical and it just does work. So sit back and enjoy the ride.

@@Learn2Sail I think i get it.... 1. Your not goin head on into the wind. 2. Using the keel & sails to offset each other (causing "forward" sideways motion) 3. HIGH pressure.... on one side of the sail & LOW pressure on the other side of the sail. Ps. Believe it or not... I know nothin about sailing (before this video) but I'm kind of gettin it already.

Can it be that easy? I always thought you've got to have proper training and "master the art of sailing".. Oh well. Just opened a whole new area of the boat market to me.. Thanks!

One dont have to own sailing boat...though visit many sailing paradise countries, areas. He is right it is not expensive nor hard to learn. I ve done it for my entire adult life without owning sailing boat.

Boat owners try to be elitist about it. They scare you away, they want their hobby to stay special and unaffordable. A boat is mainly a status symbol. 60% of the boats dont even leave the marinas in many, many months, often years. Theyre just there to show off and bring friends over to celebrate owning it with a few beers or so. But theyre not owned for going out. In reality a nice boat is not very expensive (can buy a nice one for 3-5 grand, basically like a car). And sailing itself is not overly difficult either. Mastering it, on the other hand, is. But that goes for most things. I got my first sailing boat without the slightest knowledge about boats and so many boaters shaked their heads and told me I would be a goner if Id sail without having had a proper instruction. Then I did it anyways and boy was it simple... The most complex part was to know which rope (sheet) does what. That basically took like half an hour of looking at it, pulling and seeing what it does and trying to understand. After that though it was easy. You will have fun, and dont let mean boaters try to push you out. I just bought a very nice boat for 1,5grand. You dont need to be richy rich.
