HOW TO SAY TO 'ASK' IN PORTUGUESE. I noticed some Portuguese learners, mainly English speakers, always translating 'ask' into 'perguntar' when they should be using other verbs! 'Ask' does not always translate into 'perguntar' in Brazilian Portuguese, as you will learn in today's lesson.
After today's lesson, you will be able to use the verbs 'perguntar' e 'pedir' confidently.

Muito obrigada! Muito útil mesmo. Faz muito tempo que eu me perguntava como usar o verbo “pedir”. Já percebia que se usa no lugar do verbo “perguntar”, mas eu não sabia como nem quando. Agora ficou tudo mais claro!

Simplesmente, Perguntar = to ask (a question) Pedir = to request (something)

Bom dia Bea, tudo bem?... Sempre evitei o verbo 'pedir' porque achei os dois eram intercambiáveis mas depois que explicou os usos deles, eu plenamente entendo a diferença entre os dois. Recentemente ando fazendo muito mais escuta e leitura e menos gramática, então agradeço o fato que vc continuar me lembrando que a minha gramática ainda precisa de mais melhoria 😁👍.

Muito bem! É muito importante dedicar um tempo a cada área da linguagem. Gosto da ideia de organizar os estudos da seguinte forma: Às segundas - Leitura Às terças - Escrita (prática sobre o que aprendeu no dia anterior) Às quartas - Gramática Às quintas - Compreensão auditiva Às sextas - Oralidade (sobre o que aprendeu no dia anterior) Aos sábados - Revisão do Vocabulário aprendido durante a semana Aos domingos - Descanso!! 😃

I have difficulty in detecting the difference between pedir and perdi, they sound alike when I hear them and when I say them . I guess though you can always tell which one it is from the context of the sentence

Olá, Nick! When saying those words, I have two suggestions that might help you. 1. Make the 'r' sound in the 'perdi' similar to the 'h' sound in the English word 'hospital' ('carioca accent'), or 2. Make the 'r' sound in the 'perdi' similar to the 'r' sound in the English word 'party' ('countryside accent'). Now, as for detecting them, I am afraid you will have to rely on the context, because some speakers may make a soft 'r' sound in 'perdi' 😕

Olá! 'Pedir as contas' é uma expressão que significa o mesmo que 'pedir demissão'.

Cara professora, gostaria de lhe pedir um grão do seu precioso tempo. Pode não ser educado pedir tal favor, mas sempre tenho muitas dúvidas quando se trata de português, e cada dúvida levanta muitas perguntas, o que me obriga a perguntar a quem saberia dar respostas às minhas perguntas. Aqui, por exemplo, eu pediria a permissão para perguntar-lhe como é mais ideal para se dirigir a você : respeitada Bea, estimada Bea, prezada Bea, cara Bea, querida Bea ou só professora Bea? Desculpe-me por lhe perguntar isso, mas sou bem-educado e tienho que resolver esse dilema. Peço desculpas se lhe incomodei, mas eu tive que perguntar isso..

Não é incômodo algum, muito pelo contrário. Tenho prazer em (tentar) responder todas as perguntas que me são feitas. Quanto à melhor forma de se dirigir a mim, eu diria que tanto 'Respeitada Bea' quanto 'Estimada Bea' soam um tanto formal. 'Prezada Bea' ou 'Cara Bea' conservam um tom de respeito sem serem tão formais. 'Querida Bea' tem um tom mais amigável. Gosto de 'Professora Bea' porque, no fim das contas, sou uma professora. No entanto, essa forma parece me distanciar daqueles que quero que se sintam mais à vontade ao falar comigo. Assim sendo, minhas sugestões são 'Prezada Bea', 'Cara Bea', 'Querida Bea'...ou ainda um 'Bom dia, Bea.' 😃
