I will never stop to be so impressed by the great similarity between Arabic and Hebrew. Sometimes I feel like if I learn one, I will automatically learn easier the other one.

TL;DR : NO Words that existed in ancient times ("love", "hair") sometimes a sound similar; but modern-time words ("job", "birthday") seldom do. Grammar varies a lot, too. if the sentence is more complicated than "this is that" it wouldn't be intelligible. And of course the Accent (Hebrew is spoken in a European accent because reasons while Arabic still sounds like a semitic language).

Marcello It is easy for Hebrew speakers to pick up words and short phrases. But to become conversational in Arabic is still very hard for us. The structural closeness helps, but in the end being fluent means spontaneously manipulating grammar and vocabulary. Understanding what is being said and responding spontaneously in real time is not easy.

I was thinking the same thing. Im studying both hebrew and levantine arabic, and when she was speaking fast in arabic i caught the word “kol-yom” (every day) and i was like “ah! I know that from hebrew”

I'm from Canada. My wife is from Jaffa. I hear all of these regularly. They also say 'kosher' the gym "ana rayh al kosh'r" I'm going to the gym. Your lessons are helping me so much. Thank you!!

I'm Palestinian living in the west bank, we don't use most of these words as we have less contact with Hebrew Language We do use Makhsom as we face it regularly the bread, we say خبز حمام أو خبز فينو for the rest, I think we use mostly English words Oh and for the signal one we say ما في لقط بالتلفون ههههه

In Bethlehem the only three used are ramzon(ramzor), kanion (and this is literally Israeli malls - others malls are just malls) and mahsom/makhsoum Also that bread is just ka’ik/ ka’ik bil simsim or ka’ik il quds. And no one says ishira thawiya- just ishara when it’s used instead of ramzon.

Awesome!!!! Your Zeal and passion for this is the way I am about it as well. I just need to learn more, my family all Spoke Arabic and English growing up. My Teta passed this passed November right before Christmas and she taught me about God and her life in the old country. She was the best! Anywho, your awesome and never second guess when it comes to teaching because your are confidently teaching and hoping people will absorb what your saying. Great video, i am a student in haifa and i hear arabic all time and it is allways funny to hear an hebrew word in an arabic conversation although it happens the other way aroud all the time 😅. I think we use arabic words more then you use hebrew words, and i do hope that there will be no need in the word mahsom. :)

2:41 Makhshir literally means "device" in hebrew. We normally don't use it to describe a remote (which would be Shalat, as you said). HOWEVER - Teens use Makhshir to refer to a weed bong ^_^

Actually, it would make sense for Arabs to use Rotev ( or any root variation of the word) rather than Salsa which is borrowed from Latin, as ratb رطب (or ratuv in Hebrew) means wet.

shalat comes from the word control. and rule = shilton, which is the same word also known in Arabic - sultan [king, like the Turkish sultan]. And here is the road between shalat and sultan

As an Israeli, all types of Israelis use lots of arabs words since the very start of Israelis (not jews!) before that video I didnt knew much that arabs use hebrew and it really warmed my heart to see that also arabs use hebrew words on regular basis, its intrestingto find out!

We have no "P" in Arabic) Shimenet = Sour Cream Homer = Material (It's a guttural "H") Mafraga = ScrewDriver (The battery-powered one) Magver = CD player or stereo Mazgan = AC Monit = Public transportation that fits 5-7 people where the driver usually repeats the phrases "Easy on the door", "You broke the door" and other door-related lamentations Drill Batishon = Hammer Drill

As I'm sure you are aware there are many formal Hebrew words that aren't spoken (and many even written) daily. Example telephone is formally שחרחוק but everyone just uses טלפון

Almost ALL languages borrow. It need not be political at all. Arabic in its many dialects and many countries is in no danger of dying out. We should accept the richness of vocabulary and expression, especially between related languages. Look at the huge number of non-Arabic words in Morrocan Almaghiz. Nu habbibti, yihi'ey b'sedr. Ya'alla kadima!

I speak both Hebrew and English and we borrow from both languages (and others as well) and often give the words conjugations based on which language they're being used in, for example we call this hebrization when talking in English about "hebrizing" words... Yup invented words there

There is a word for telephone signal and we use it: تغطية and also the uniform (school uniform or lab coat): مريول for the remote control we say: تحكم أو ريموت for the traffic light we simply say: إشارة

Well, when you have two peoples and languages, whereas one is used on a more frequent societal basis, communities maybe mixed, and cultural diffusion. Inevitably, there's going to be borrowing and influencing, that includes the dialect of the language spoken, it'll incorporate words from the other and vice versa (Norther Palestinian Arabic with Hebrew, Israeli Hebrew with Levatine words, etc). That is just the nature of languages, societies, cultures, and humans, they evolve and adapt to their environments, this also includes add mixture in languages.

Hebrew speakers sometimes say "Tayeb" طيب in conversation instead of beseder or tov טוֹב/ בסדר. The mixing of languages is normal when people have daily interactions, and it's actually quite lovely. Making it political is not.

There is a wrap with pita bread and various feelings like aubergine or ground meat, and is called Lahmajoon. We eat it in northen greece but i think it came here as a turkish food. Sounds to me like the Lakhmania

Fotinoura Miloshaya yes Turks use it too. But it’s actually Arabic in origin lahm is meat. Ajeen is dow. Palestinians say lahm b ajeen. B is with. Meat with dow. We say lahmbajeen. It’s the same food like pizza with meat :)) we all borrow from each other. It’s a beautiful thing.

I'm Palestinian Aramean (Aramaic and Arab speaking family) and our language seems somewhere between Arabic and Hebrew (closer to Hebrew in some ways and closer to Arabic in other ways.) Lahem as in Bethlehem is Hebrew and Aramaic (in Aramaic it's lahem in the absolute form and lahma/lahmo in the emphatic form.) For "good" we say either taba/tobo, tava/tovo, or tawa/towo.

@@Aj-zr8dz I don't like Netanyahu, but I understand why some people would vote for him, to protest their interests. They probably don't hate Palestinians, they just want security and stability. In the same way Abbas might also be called a fascist dictator by Israelis, but he works in the interests of Palestinians. Both presidents are bad. But you should try to befriend Israelis and increase peace and tolerance regardless of what politicians do 😊😉

Very interesting (mianyen 😅) video. In my opinion, since both hebrew and arabic are semitic languages, there is no problem to borrow words :) for example in the gulf area they use a lot of english words and sounds irritating.

Salsa came from arabs....people forget about the ottoman empire where cultures where mixed.....arabs had a lot of influence in spain thus creating/borrowing words.....our cuisine and other things are well traced back to the middle east.

Omar R.R Ottoman Empire has nothing to do with Spain 😂 it was Andalusia ( related to Umayyad ) yes Arabs and Spanish people encountered together and there are lots of Arabs influences in Spanish culture, but the opposite also happened even in a small way, Salsa is a Latin word you can google it and make sure

@@omarr.r1448 the Spanish word salsa comes from the Latin adjective salsus/salsa/salsum that means 'salty'. From the same adjective comes the word salad in English, insalata in Italian, ensalada in Spanish, salade in French, salad in Hebrew and so on. Even in european languages had borrowed hundreds of Arabic words, that doesn't mean that Arabic itself hasn't borrowed a lot of words from other languages.

I think it's apropos your other video where you said that Shami dialect pronounces letters "more simply". It's the same in Modern Hebrew vs. Biblical Hebrew. Nobody pronounces the soft dalet (dh) in spoken Hebrew unless they were born in an Arabic-speaking country. I'm curious to see what will be in another 50 years -- how much mutual borrowing goes on until the languages are even more similar...

@Solid, you don't use these words because you live in Bethlehem and do not speak to or work with Israelis in your every day life like Arabs with Israeli Citizenship. So naturally, you wouldn't borrow as many words from Hebrew as they would.

the language of the Holy Land is Aramaic, as a Jew I still spent years studying it and pray in it. So I am wondering why you are so insistent that you can't use Hebrew words in your daily like because "it's not OUR language." Jesus spoke Hebrew and Aramaic. The language of Saudi Arabia- Arabic- is the only language you believe belongs in use in the Holy Land? that isn't very historically acccurate.

No Rina. Maha is right when she says you should avoid mixing up words of several languages. The result is generally not very nice, and it is always "richer" to use all the possibilities of your language. For example, in Hebrew, you can use the Yiddish word "Tchunt", but it's more elegant to use the Hebrew word "Hamin". Maha was not trying to make a political statement here.

Fotinoura Miloshaya both are classical arabic but they don't have the same meaning mutheer means impressive or sexy while momtez means perfect !

I think lahmania in Hebrew came from the saying in passover's Eve which is in Aramaic : "Ha Lahma Ania" , meaning the poor people's bread.

Exactly rotev is just a Hebrew verb modification for the world Ratab in Arabic , or Ratuv in Hebrew - which means wet if I remember correctly.

I think it's a good thing that Palestinians use words from hebrew and Israelis use words from arabic! There's already so much divisiveness between the two groups, sharing a few words is like a baby step towards coexisting
