Such a GREAT question! And it's one that probably has as many answers as there are artists...but this is what works for me.
Learning to Paint with Paper is my collage class and every 2-3 weeks we have a live Q&A call where I answer questions. This is a small excerpt from the August 31 2023 session.

You have given me a great idea. Since I’ve only just recently started diving into collage/paining, I’m going to begin a canvas and work on it until I no longer can!

It is truly a great exercise, Jill! One of the main things it shows me are all the interesting and objecting thoughts that come up. I get to really look at them and see if they even make sense (usually not! 😆)

I know, I have a habit of being drawn to fabric patterns that are like my paintings.😆 And I think deciding when a painting is done is difficult for most people, so you’re not alone.

I have started to try this technique of applying tissue paper to create . Elementary q/a - what do you use to clean the “medium” off your fingers after doing the work? Yikes it took a while for me to remove it off my fingers with scrubbing. Tks

I think it depends on the medium-I use Golden Glazing Medium and it comes off pretty easily. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend it.
