Tuxedo Computers sent over their Polaris 15 laptop to the studio for review. Equipped with an AMD CPU, a 15" display, and a powerful GPU, it aims to be a great choice for the gaming crowd. In this video, I give it a full review. I'll discuss the hardware, the default software, gaming, and additional thoughts.

Always enjoy your videos, Jay. Feel free to review any and all kinds of hardware! When you speak, you're always very calm and I don't think I've ever heard you raise your voice, etc. I find this to be unique about your channel and watching your videos is very relaxing. I really appreciate that relaxed vibe you have!

There's a Gen3 Polaris now, and there's an option for a 2K panel. They also moved the webcam to the top of the screen :) I'm seriously thinking of pushing the button on this unit, but want to find out if it's possible to completely power down the Nvidia GPU.

I'm curious about something. I know that System76 offers automatic switching between the integrated and dedicated graphics card on their Oryx Pro. Does this laptop offer something similar? Or is the dedicated graphics card activated all the time?

Do you feel the laptop temperature increase when the gpu is active ? I don t know which one to choose between tuxedo and system 76. Which one has a better fan control for the noise and the temperature ? Thank you a lot !

I prefer having the touchpad closer to the center of the wideness of the chassis too instead of the exact center of the non-numpad keyboard. Due to how I move the hands, it can't be too much to the center, otherwise my palm will rest on the touchpad. About the numeric pad, I prefer 15'' with it. Only the 14'' and below it starts getting too cramped. I own a 15.3'' clevo right now and I have a more complete keyboard than that one. The keys are slightly smaller but they are quite good.

@spooky3669

Depends on the update, but 99% of the time not. I also update when I want and that is ones a month. Don't get paranoid on updates like windows, running Mint like this for 2 years now never had an issue.

There’s a lot of screen tear on the doom gameplay - is that just an artefact from recording?
@LearnLinuxTV
@LearnLinuxTV 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, I'm having some difficulty with the screen recorders and the external display I am forced to use as a result of those issues cause things like that to happen. The footage was recorded from the external display with a different refresh rate. I'll try to get those issues fixed as soon as I can. It's the Magewell 4K capture card, if anyone is curious.

Thank you for the review - I have been curious about peoples opinions on Tuxedos laptops as there are not many reviews out there. It seems Tuxedo are not getting the same attention as System76, but to be fair, they do go a bit further in pursuit of some aspects. But living in EU I find it to be a bit to expensive to get one of those shipped (although they absolutely look tempting). You ask for requests on reviews - I would like to see reviews on Tuxedo Computers Aura 15 and Pulse 15, both sporting Ryzen cpu and integrated gpu, as they are more in my sphere of interest.

We could see how much the chassis flexed by you just pressing a single key. I'm sure not everyone finds that annoying, but for me personally the flex should be as little as possible. This is also something most laptop reviewers checks and gives the viewers a good idea of. Might be something to consider for your next review. Due to the flex alone, this laptop isn't something I will consider when I invest in a new one Q1 2021. Thank you for the review.
@LearnLinuxTV
@LearnLinuxTV 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't really notice any flex while typing. I did notice that in the footage after recording but I'm not sure why that was the case. I'll take another look at it, it's going back today but I should be able to look at that again before I tape up the box.
@jaxxarmstrong
@jaxxarmstrong 3 жыл бұрын
@@LearnLinuxTV it was so clear while you pressed one key that I'm quite sure if you rested your hands just slightly you'd see a massive flex. This is nothing new to cheap laptops and I'm honestly astonished you didn't notice it earlier. This is one of the main things (laptop) reviewers check closely as it's one of the major differences between a good and less good laptop. Another thing is possible heat dissipation coming from-under the keyboard hitting your finger after some usage.
@xmg_gg
@xmg_gg 3 жыл бұрын
@@jaxxarmstrong I think in the video he pressed harder than you normally would do while typing. You can see *no flex* on the "T" and "R" keys (pressed only lightly), but more on the "H" key (pressed quite firmly). Also, any flex in the middle of keyboard is generally not to be confused with flex on the palm rest. Palm Rest is rock stable, so no worries when resting your hands. Generally speaking, keyboard flex is a function of material choice and total system weight. Aluminum is generally more flexible than plastics, but comes with various advantages such as look and feel and great thermal conductivity. You can make Aluminum thicker to avoid flex, but then you wouldn't reach the 1.9kg total system weight with these combinations of components, competent (no throttling) thermal system, battery capacity and I/O port layout. Tuxedo Computers take a very long time to deliver it seems. When I ordered, they quoted 2 weeks once in stock to build this machine. I am still waiting after near 5 weeks. Then there is at least 2 weeks for shipping. Approaching 2 months in total. That is a very long time for a generic laptop. The order page doesn't really give adequate status at what stage the order process is at. I really hope they change the customer facing aspect of the order process because it feels unhelpful and looks like it was quickly hacked together in a few minutes.

A note on the 4k screen option, there is a very similar laptop offered by Tuxedo - the Book XP15, that does offer a 4k OLED screen. It is more expensive than this laptop and there is no AMD option, but it does have a bigger battery and more dGPU options. The form factor is the same as well. Just a note for anyone where 4k is a dealbreaker. As a side note, the Book XP15 is the exact same as an Oryx Pro 6 - just no coreboot, and it offers a 1080p and 4k option unlike System76.

I don't know WHY people call these laptops? When the bottom of the computer is full of ventilation louvers... it's NOT a Laptop. It is a Notebook. A True Laptop has no ports on the bottom because your LAP will cover the ventilation ports and no longer have proper cooling. Laptops actually have ventilation ports on the sides and/or the rear of the machine.
