Thanks. This is the first time I heard someone point out the difference in pronouncing â in N and S as in Cây. Unfortunately for those of us who prefer to learn Southern, there don't seem to be any pronouncing dictionaries online or on apps so we have to guess based on KZfaq of SVFF, Learn VN w Annie, and one more gentleman whose name I can't recall right now. A dict app w Southern V would be fantastic

Not gonna lie, as a nguoi bac the only word that slightly bothers me is when nguoi nam pronounces "Viet nam" as "Yet nam". But I think nam dialect is cute and you did a great job trying to speak in bac dialect 😊

As someone living in the US, it seems to me that pronouncing "Viet" as "Yet" (or "Yeet"? "Yiet"?) would be like an American pronouncing "United" States as "Oo-nited" States--in other words, weird...but for all I know, there's a small faction of the US population somewhere calling it "Oo-nited" States :)

We don't pronounce it as Yet Nam though, it's either Yiec Nam or Viec Nam. The original word "Viet" is from Chinese anyway where it's Yuet Nam.

Người Nam nói giọng Bắc cũng dễ thành giọng ngoại tỉnh (country bumpkin), vợ mình tập tiếng Bắc một hồi rồi mình nói "Thôi cứ nói giọng Nam, chứ nói vậy nghe không giống Hà nội". :)

2:15 I couldn't make out the pronunciation difference between "thất" and "thâc", i.e., it never sounded like an ending "c" to me (for northern accent). Some of the other differences (tr vs. ch) seem almost indistinguishable to me, or at least I would hope that someone listening to it would easily understand the intended word (??). For the dot tone (4:30), I get that the "i" sound (in "Chị") stops abruptly in the north compared to the south, but my impression is that the dot tone difference is a lot more obvious if there's a following consonant (e.g., in "bạn"), that isn't even enunciated in the north(?). (The abrupt segue to the louder ad at 8:04 was jarring....)

The northern Vietnamese people might have gotten some influence from China‘s Mandarin: trà = cha2 in Mandarin Chinese. But in other places where the word "tea" is borrowed, from Mandarin = o cha in Japanese, chaa in Cantonese, chai in Indian and Turkish languages but the word would be related to de(h)/te(h) via a southern Chinese dialect called Hokkien where in most European languages, the word for "tea" is either té(Spanish/Italian/Portuguese), thé (French) or tee (German and Germanic languages of northwestern Europe like Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Faroese, or Icelandic.) The Vietnamese word is now Vietnamese with a distinct tr initial and an "a" vowel with a huyền tone plus the southern accent is very different. In China's northern Mandarin dialects are very rough and forced. So I guess when Ho Chi Minh went to China he learned that too and incorporated into northern Vietnamese to be the officially taught language in a communist/socialist country at that time.
