Leather Lessons | glue tutorial

Gluing leather is the sort of thing that I gloss over all the time, but there's definitely more detail that we can go into for this step of the leathercrafting process.
Hope that you guys found this interesting, and I extra hope that the diagram made as much sense as I thought it did.

Pack it up, folks. There will never be a better video explanation of leather glue basics than what youve seen here. Thank you for your time and attention if you were planning on making your own video explanation, but your services will no longer be required. I suggest trying to explain something else, like "12 Home uses for man-o-war jellyfish venom," or "Advanced Toilet plunging techniques for Yeti urine."

Thanks for the extremely kind words! Those coasters were made as a birthday present for my brother, I hadn't actually considered selling them until now. If there's demand I'll make an Etsy store at some stage, I'm sure

For the Germans out there: If you need a very durable and strong bond get Kövulfix, but only used it in a well ventilated room

Hi this video is great! The glue you used is it flexible after it dries? I am using some leather finger cots to fix the finger lining on a baseball glove and the glue needs to be flexable.

What type of glue would you use if you're just binding the outer edges so you can sew easier? Would gorilla glue work?

Realistically, that's what the glue is doing here: it doesn't come into contact with the water at all. Any contact cement will work

Thanks for the kind words! I started by buying a "starter pack" from eBay that definitely had a lot of crap tools in it, but I don't think that was a waste because it showed me which tools in the kit I actually used, and I replaced those with higher quality versions. That being said, I sure don't want to purposefully steer you towards a crap starter pack, and I buy most of my leather and tools direct from local suppliers so I can't recommend any Amazon kits, sorry! Yes, as long as long as the jacket is genuine leather

So hypothetically speaking, let’s say I found this tutorial after my first round of gluing and didn’t score it or wait for it to be tacky… how should I correct this after an hour of letting it set?

Well, in that very hypothetical situation, if you can pull lightly on the two pieces you've glued and they stay stuck, I'd generally leave it. If you pull on the pieces and they come apart, pull them completely apart, wash the glue off with water or metho, and wait for it to dry completely before attempting again. Also worth bearing in mind is that many slow drying glues become stronger over 24 hours, some even increase in boobs strength up to 48 hours after application. So if it's a bit "meh" after an hour, it can sometimes be worth it to wait a day or two and see if it comes good. Hope all this helped!

@@Cxizent thank you! I pulled the piece off just fine and there was no residue on the box. Was able to restart from scratch and the current version seemed to be bonded much better after 30 minutes! Won’t do any “stress testing” until tomorrow. Thanks for the video! Definitely saved my project 😊
