Just a couple of tips everyone: Unless you are trying to intentionally dull your knife, never ever scrape with it using its blade, it is designed for cutting/slicing... When using the saw to scrape ferro rods (or wood to create tinder), it's best to strike as close as possible to the saw handle to prevent it from bending, also gives you better control. Anyway, Leatherman tools are great and I wouldn't be complete without my Charge TTi. Peace - Ed

I keep a Leatherman rebar in my wallet sized leather pouch with a Ferro rod, jute twine, and my keys. Always have it and love it alot. I might get the wave sometime but i love my setup and it'll stay that way for now. Thanks for the video! Edit: also new subscriber

Thanks for the demonstration! Now I carry the "Surge" as an EDC. Works well and it's solid.

Scraping the blade to create fine shavings is a really good way to dull it.

If you dont want the tinder going all over the place then you just pull the rod instead of pushing the striker

Using the saw back is a great tip. I can't believe I never thought of that. I have often use the screwdriver but it's a short reach so there is a higher likelihood of messing up the tinder pile... Here is a tip for anyone looking to get a Leatherman but are hesitant because of the price. Check out Target at the end of the season. I got my Wave a couple of years ago for thirty bucks. They carry some outdoors equipment but no one ever goes there to buy it so they just end up putting stuff on clearance to get rid of it.

In a survival situation, I want to preserve my blades and wood saw as much as possible so I'd use the file as much as I could to shave off wood and using to scrap the ferro rod with.

The Wave, Surge, and Super Tool are all good choices.
@mowgli2071

I carry the surge because the wave seems too small for my hand and I want more leverage. That might be the one advantage the wave has with having a fixed saw: scraping a ferro rod. But I imagine you could get the same effect with the awl on the surge

I carry a Leatherman Charge. It’s been a great tool and it’s helped me in a pinch many times when my work tools were not handy or available at the time. I’ve been thinking about upgrading to the Charge TTI Titanium in the near future. Second only to the primary Blade, I also use the saw for small limb clearing and cutting in boxes in drywall when my prick coworkers borrow and lose my keyhole saw.

+Living Survival You are correct about the length of the saw helping you not mess up the tinder pile. A nice way to do it.

The back of the saw is amazing for the ferry rod, I've tried several things and nothing comes close to getting the same spark, note you can also use it with the saw closed. I don't think there's anything that can compete with the wave as an all around camping tool. It's pretty much perfect.

@TheKimjoh560

David Ventura Its not that much bigger to be honest. I had mine mounted horizontally on my belt and it was barely noticable. Wave is a great tool but the Surge is better if you dont mind the size. Its more rugged and has an awl and replacable saw blades. If you are looking for a EDC tool you might want to try to get a Charge TTI it doubles as top quality pocket knife and its a bit nicer all around.

Hi. Great video. I always wondered how you would be able to prevent the tool from rusting out on you in a long term survival situation. I remember Les Stroud using one around salt water in the show Survivorman. Many have used it on the show Alone. I recently went to use mine which I keep in my garage. It was really rusty and most of the tools were nearly impossible to get out because of the rust. Wouldn’t that be a concern to a survivalist? If you have any suggestions, I’d appreciate it. Thanks again. 😊

No awl?? Not good for bushcrafting. But it is not hard to fashion one from a longer bit, to be used with the LM bit extender/adapter. Or to grind a tip and a side edge on the fixed slot driver a little, which is redundant with a bit kit. The serrated blade is useless as an awl.

Nail file? I have three Waves, from 19 years old, to new. No nail files on any of them. Mine are definitely not designed "grooming" kits. Popular with soldiers in the armoured corps, though!

I think they're overrated tbh. My knife and folding saw are better at their jobs, and I carry a swiss army knife as a last ditch cutting tool if I lose my pack. The only thing I like a multitool for is the pliers - so I carry a small pair of pliers.
