Before you can make a leather knife sheath you need to be able to make the template first, here's how!

Thank you so much man, I was lost before I found this. Also very good tip about considering whether it would be right or left hand carry.

New subscriber... Fantastic video... I've looked through several sheath videos looking for this information. So very tired of these videos that focus on cutting, stitching and finishing after they flop this magical template out of nowhere to lay out the leather. Thank you so much for providing something truly useful and informative.

I just made my first leather sheath and I wish I had watched your vid before I cut the leather.I made a template on paper by just laying the knife on the paper and eyeballed it, cut out the paper,transferred it to the leather,cut the damn leather, formed it around the knife and it's about 3/4 of an inch to short!! DAMN. Oh well live and learn...Thanks for the help...Take care...Rod

+walleyefishin rod Ya I've done that many times, always make the template bigger if need be, you can always remove leather but can't add it.

Good video Jason, but I think you should have included how to make the welt as well. Still, this will get someone started making taco style sheaths which is what you were out to do. :)
@JDOCustomLeather9 жыл бұрын
Well you don't make the welt with the template that's more for after you cut out the piece of leather, then you make the welt, maybe you mean to explain how to leave room for it, there was a few things I thought of that I should have added, thanks.

hi. i wondered if a welt is necesary, or if i wouldnt incloud it i have some problems with the measeraments. thanks for the great video
@pr0faker4 жыл бұрын
Not a must but you need to take into account you lose a bit of space because the ends have to come together instead of having a few mm thick piece of leather between them, also you need to be absolutely sure you are not pushing the blade into stitchings or the whole thing comes apart after a while of course.

when you talk about bushcraft sheaths they have handle heavy knives so you can only have a pouch /fold over because the knife wants to flip handle down .you have to have a high belt loop and a very stiff sheth to keep then handle up on the belt .
@JDOCustomLeather9 жыл бұрын
dale carpenter Not all bush knives have heavy handles, Mora's are very light.
@dalecarpenter88289 жыл бұрын
there seems to be an unwritten rule with bush crafters mostly the english bushies that a good size (6") knife is as they say is not needed they say the same for guns but that another sub. over there they have grown up with the handle heavy knife .over here its like more of the blade heavy heavy blade puts power to the tool light blade takes power from the blade reducing its usefulness .the same goes for other tools as well .take the 6-8 lb splitting maul next to the 12 lb maul .everybody grabs the little 6 pounder and pounds themselves silly while the 12 pounder blasts through the wood in a few hits to me if the knife doesn't balance at the center or is blade heavy i don't have a use for it in bushcraft use .yes you can use them and get by but i can get by with a rock but i would rather have the knife

Nice looking sheath. Glad you didn't wet form it, fold over sheaths don't often need it and it gives you that ugly hump at the back which I can't stand.
