It's puzzling to me that the lecturer has such poor pronunciation of the words and letters, yet has mastered the punctuation. It's so easy to listen to a native Hebrew speaker and you'll immediately realise that it is not shwa but shva, as one example of very many mistakes. It's a shame that the students are being misled in terms of pronunciation.

When introducing the vocal shewa, this video says that it occurs after the "full letter vowels" - obviously different to mere "long vowels". But at 45:46, in the first example where we need to identify whether the shewa is vocal or silent, we're told that it's vocal because it follows a "long vowel", which made be very confused, and I consulted my notes and the recording multiple times. What exactly is the rule that tells me that this shewa is a vocal shewa? Is it only "full letter vowels" which produce vocal shewas after them, or "long vowels" too?

The Jews of Yemen are from the first diaspora over 3,000 years ago when they exiled from the first galuth (destruction of the first Temple. They maintain the original pronunciation of the "ayin" which is the same sound as the Arabic "eyn" sound. They also pronounce the segol "a" sound as in "cat". the Resh is similar to the Spanish "R" but not trilled as much. The Ashkenazi pronounce the resh gutturaly n gthe throat.

Is it the case that for consonants with more than one pronunciation you just have to memorize the pronunciation for each word? e.g. tsade can be pronounced 's' or 'ts' - or is tsade always 'ts' at the end of words? (as in the last word in Gen 1.1. (meaning 'earth')), at the very end of the video.
@Potamotrygorgeous
@Potamotrygorgeous 6 жыл бұрын
hebrew vowels and consonants don't have more than one pronounciation. A tsade is always pronounced as an ts-sound, whether it is at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of a word (which then it only changes form, not pronounciation).

Shewa is the "short i" sound as in Kit or Lit. It's not a short a sound as in cup. The short u sound is the kumatz. The patach or pasach is the Ah sound as in drAma. It's not like A as in cat. No Hebrew vowel makes the short A sound. (Born and raised Orthodox Jew here btw) These are the classic Ashkenazi and Yemenite pronunciations. The modern Hebrew (Israeli Ivrit) commandeered the modern Sephardic pronunciations that totally lost the Kumatz sound. It's all Patach (Pasach), ah. The Uh sound in modern Sephardic pronunciation is the shortening of the cholem sound in the word עולם which should be pronounced OH-lum but is instead pronounced Uh-lom.

I’ve studied extensively under Dr. Barrick and feel I can at least give you his reasoning. This is a class for a Christian Seminary. It’s very unlikely these men are going to be in a situation where knowing the more popular pronunciation/phonology is really going to be relevant. The Yemenite is used because it’s fairly(not completely) agreed upon that it’s the closest that remains to the pronunciation used at the time of The Tanakh’s writing. Additionally, the prevailing thought is that the Yemenite pronunciation connects the most closely to the proto-Sinaitic phonology, which many graduate students will be taking courses for in the future. Also, I believe he studied largely under Yemenite teachers while in Israel-making it the most familiar to him. He does make it very clear in class that if you use this pronunciation in Israel, you will be looked at like a fool. I’m not saying it’s the right or wrong choice, just giving the reasoning as I understand it. Plus, this lecture’s from a decade ago and I’m almost positive he’s long retired, so it’s an irrelevant discussion now anyway. Peace to you.

I am quite frustrated that in a beginning Hebrew class you use so many examples that are exceptions to the rule. Exceptions should be saved toward the end of the class after foundational understanding of the rules has been established.

I'd say it's different pacing for different purposes. University classes in ancient languages are often very rushed, since they want you to "know" all the grammar in the language after just one year or even one semester of study. So you often get a large "info dump" rather than having information spread out nicely with practice work in between. In a high school class (let's say, Latin language), the grammar would be spread out over maybe five or six years, so you'd get lots of easy examples to work through that gradually get harder, gradually introducing more and more exceptions as you get used to the grammar rules. And if I were teaching primary school, I'd space things out even more and have every step broken down into smaller components. University students are generally more tolerant to being crammed full of information because they chose the subject of their own volition and are really motivated to learn. In summary, I think it's hard to squeeze in the amount of time it would take for good comfortable pacing, gradual learning of new grammar rules, into a tertiary course in which students want to (and are expected to) start reading directly from the Hebrew Bible in just one year or one semester.

Dr. Bill Barrick has mentioned that Paleo-Hebrew and Proto-Sinaitic are synonymous in previous videos. There is a one-to-one correspondence between the meanings of the names of the Hebrew characters and the pictorial representations of the Proto-Sinaitic pictograms.

Sorry I wrote 200 instead od 2000 when ProtoSinaityic did not exist, and there is absolutely no correspondence between Hebrew and such languages, different is that a letter of the Hebrew MAY correspond and not one to one to symbols of other languages, but to say that 2000 year, or even 4000 it was the same language....probably they spoke egyptian (as Mosheà was egyptian). Simply that language did not exist, thus what language was speaking Shaul, Moshe, Avraham ....not the Hebrew, not aramaic, not ....

YHVH is not ever pronounced in Judaism, this is a lie. It was pronounced in ancient times when the temple stood but the practice ended with the destruction of the Temple because only the high priest spoke the name YHVH. Religious Jews won't ever say YHVY they will say Adonai in prayer and if God's name is spoken in casual conversation they say HaShem.

The original texts of the Hebrew Bible did not have niqqud. Viwels from "Adonai" were added to the Tetragrammaton in manuscripts to remind the reader to say "Adonai" instead of trying to pronounce the Name of God, as was the practice developed among the Jews. Also, how can it be "Yeh"-ovah if "Yah" is the consistent pronunciation of the first part of the Tetragrammaton when it is used separately, or in words like "Hallelujah"?

Translators are picking and choosing both the Jewish ones and the Christians ones because of doctrine not because of what is really written. They do not understand the Son of Man is a Kamo and each prophet is him. Study Hebrew so you know the truth Psalm 139 ( Artscroll Tanakh)16 as YOUR EYES SAW MY UNSHAPED FORM, AND IN YOUR BOOK ALL WERE RECORDED; THOUGH THEY WILL BE FASHIONED THROUGH MANY DAYS, TO HIM THEY ARE ONE Mic 5:2 “But you, Běyth Leḥem Ephrathah, you who are little among the clans of Yehuḏah, out of you shall come forth to Me the One to become Ruler in Yisra’ěl. And His COMINGS forth (APPEARANCES) (a) are of old, from everlasting.” Footnote: a Or His appearances. Amos 3:7 “For YHVH ELOHIM does nothing without revealing his secret to his SERVANT the prophets. IN HEBREW AMOS 3:7 SERVANT IS SINGULAR NOT PLURAL AS WE HAVE IT TRANSLATED. Luke 24:27 And BEGINNING WITH MOSES and ALL the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning HIMSELF. TO SEE WHAT FATHER IS SAYING IN DEUTERONOMY YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE WORDS IN HEBREW AND WHAT THEY MEAN IN REALITY. KAMO FOR EXAMPLE IS THE PROPHETS THAT WILL BE STOOD UP OR MADE TO STAND ON THEIR FEET IN HEBREW TERMS. KAMO MEANS THEY WILL ACTUALLY BE A CAMOUFLAGE OF MOSES. Psalm 40: Then I said, “Behold, I have come; IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME: 8 I delight to do your will, O my ELOHIM; your law is within my heart.” EACH PROPHET GIVES YOU CLUES IT IS THE SAME THE SON OF MAN IN A KAMO BODY THAT IS SPEAKING: EZEKIEL IS ONE OF THE EASIEST TO SEE Ezekiel 36 :3 Is YHVH speaking to the same SON OF MAN that came in the NT telling him they will make him desolate and a possession to the heathens the other nations. Ezekiel is a description not a name the person addressed in that book 98 times is the SON OF MAN . #1 EXAMPLE FROM EZEKIEL Ezekiel 2 : 3-5 And He said to me, “SON OF MAN, I am sending you TO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, TO A NATION OF REBELS who have rebelled against Me. They and their fathers have transgressed against Me, until this day. : I SEND YOU TO THEM , and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says YHVH ELOHIM.’ 5 And WHETHER THEY HEAR OR REFUSE TO HEAR, for they are a rebellious house - shall know that a PROPHET HAS BEEN IN THEIR MIDST. COMPARE TO THE SON OF MAN’S WORDS IN THE NT Matthew 15:24 He answered, “I WAS SENT ONLY TO THE LOST SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL.” Luke 9:44 “LET THESE WORDS SINK INTO YOUR EARS: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” Luke 14:35 It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. “HE WHO HAS EARS TO HEAR, LET HIM HEAR.” Luke 4:24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. Luke 7:16 Fear seized them all, and they glorified ELOHIM, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “ELOHIM has visited his people!” #2 EXAMPLE FROM EZEKIEL Ezekiel 17:2 “Son of man, propound a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel; Ezekiel 24:3 And utter a parable to the rebellious house and say to them, Thus says YHVH ELOHIM: “Set on the pot, set it on; pour in water also; Psalm 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, COMPARE TO THE SON OF MAN’S WORDS IN THE NT Mark 4:34 He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything. Luke 19:11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of ELOHIM was to appear immediately Mat 13:13 “Because of this I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Mat 13:14 “And in them the prophecy of Yeshayahu is completely filled, which says, ‘Hearing you shall hear and by no means understand, and seeing you shall see and by no means perceive, Mat 13:15 for the heart of this people has become thickened, and their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their heart, and turn back, and I heal them.’

THEY DON’T WANT YHVH’S WORDS THOUGH AND HE IS TELLING THEM IT IS EASIER FOR HEAVEN AND EARTH TO PASS AWAY THAN ON STROKE OF THAT WORD TO FALL(G4098 to perish, i.e come to an end, disappear, cease). . Luke 16:16 “The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of ELOHIM is preached, and everyone FORCES HIS WAY INTO IT . 17 “And it is easier for the heaven and the earth to pass away than for one STROKE of the Torah to fall (G4098 to perish, i.e come to an end, disappear, cease). EXODUS 33: 17 And YHVH said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘YHVH.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “YOU CANNOT SEE MY FACE, FOR MAN SHALL NOT SEE ME AND LIVE."” 21 And YHVH said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”

IF NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN ELOHIM THEN HOW DID JACOB SEE HIM AND LIVE? BECAUSE JACOB WAS ALSO A KAMO OF THE SON OF MAN Genesis 32:30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “FOR I HAVE SEEN ELOHIM FACE TO FACE, YET MY LIFE HAS BEEN DELIVERED." IF NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN ELOHIM THEN HOW DID ISAIAH SEE HIM? BECAUSE ISAIAH WAS ALSO A KAMO OF THE SON OF MAN Isaiah 6:1-8 6 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw YHVH sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train[a] of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is YHVH of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; FOR I AM A MAN OF UNCLEAN LIPS; AND I DWELL IN THE MIDST OF A PEOPLE OF UNCLEAN LIPS; FOR MY EYES HAVE SEEN THE KING, YHVH OF HOSTS!" 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; YOUR GUILT IS TAKEN AWAY, AND YOUR SIN ATONED FOR." 8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “HERE I AM" SEND ME." IF NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN ELOHIM THEN HOW DID MANOAH SEE HIM AND LIVE? BECAUSE MANOAH WAS ALSO A KAMO OF THE SON OF MAN JUDGES 13: 8 Then Manoah prayed to YHVH and said, “O YHVH, please let THE MAN OF ELOHIM WHOM YOU SENT COME AGAIN TO TEACH US WHAT WE ARE TO DO WITH THE CHILD WHO WILL BE BORN." 9 And ELOHIM listened to the voice of Manoah, and the MESSENGER OF ELOHIM CAME AGAIN to the woman as she sat in the field. But Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “Behold, THE MAN WHO CAME TO ME THE OTHER DAY HAS APPEARED TO ME." 11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, “ARE YOU THE MAN WHO SPOKE TO THIS WOMAN? And he said, “I AM." 12 And Manoah said, “Now when your words come true, what is to be the child's manner of life, and what is his mission?” 13 And the MESSENGER OF YHVH said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 14 She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean thing. All that I commanded her let her observe.” 15 Manoah said to the MESSENGER OF YHVH , “Please let us detain you and prepare a young goat for you.” 16 And the MESSENGER OF YHVH said to Manoah, “If you detain me, I will not eat of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, THEN OFFER IT TO YHVH.” (FOR MANOAH DID NOT KNOW THAT HE WAS THE MESSENGER OF YHVH ) 17 And Manoah said to the MESSENGER OF YHVH , “What is your name, so that, when your words come true, we may honor you?” 18 And the MESSENGER OF YHVH said to him, “Why do you ask my name, SEEING IT IS WONDERFUL?” 19 So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, and offered it on the rock to YHVH, TO THE ONE WHO WORKS WONDERS, and Manoah and his wife were watching. 20 And when the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, the MESSENGER OF YHVH WENT UP IN THE FLAME OF THE ALTAR. Now Manoah and his wife were watching, and they fell on their faces to the ground. ************************************************************* IF NO ONE HAS EVER GONE TO HEAVEN THEN HOW DID ELIJAH GO? John 5:36-38 36 But THE TESTIMONY THAT I HAVE IS GREATER THAN THAT OF JOHN. FOR THE WORKS THAT THE FATHER HAS GIVEN ME TO ACCOMPLISH, THE VERY WORKS I AM DOING, BEAR WITNESS ABOUT ME THAT THE FATHER HAS SENT ME. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. HIS VOICE YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD, HIS FORM YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN, 38 AND YOU DO NOT HAVE HIS WORD ABIDING IN YOU, FOR YOU DO NOT BELIEVE THE ONE WHOM HE SENT. ******************************************************************* John 5:39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and IT IS THEY THAT BEAR WITNESS ABOUT ME 40 YET YOU REFUSE TO COME TO ME THAT YOU MAY HAVE LIFE,41 I DO NOT RECEIVE GLORY FROM THE PEOPLE. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of ELOHIM within you. 43 I HAVE COME IN MY FATHER'S NAME AND YOU DO NOT RECEIVE ME. THOUGH ANOTHER COMES IN HIS OWN NAME, YOU WILL RECEIVE HIM. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from THE ONLY ELOHIM? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 FOR IF YOU BELIEVED MOSES YOU WOULD BELIEVE ME; FOR HE WROTE OF ME. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?” Luke 24:27 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things CONCERNING HIMSELF. IN DANIEL 8:17 AGAIN THIS IS YHVH LETTING THE SON OF MAN KNOW WHAT ALL WILL HAPPEN AND IT IS NO WONDER IT MADE HIM VIOLENTLY SICK Daniel 8:17 So he came near where I stood. And when he came, I was frightened and fell on my face. But he said to me, “Understand, O 👉SON OF MAN 👈, that the vision is for the time of the end.” Leviticus 17:11 For the life (IE SOUL) of the flesh IS IN THE BLOOD, and I HAVE GIVEN IT FOR YOU ON THE ALTAR TO MAKE ATONEMENT FOR YOUR SOULS, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life (IE SOUL). WHOSE BLOOD CRIES FROM THE GROUND TO YHVH NOW? Revelation 16:6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and YOU HAVE GIVEN THEM BLOOD TO DRINK. IT IS WHAT THEY DESERVE!" Luke 17:29-30 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. 30 EVEN THUS SHALL IT BE IN THE DAY WHEN THE SON OF MAN IS REVEALED. SAD THING WE ARE IN THE WRATH AND PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW IT THE SON OF MAN changed forms all the time John 1:14 14 And THE WORD BECAME FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the ONLY [UNIQUE ONE OF A KIND] Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. NOW YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND HOW THE SON OF MAN COULD CHANGE FORMS AND BECOME 3 PEOPLE THEN ONE PERSON YET THE FATHER SAID THIS MY SON LISTEN TO HIM! THIS IS WHY HE SAID PETER HAD NO IDEAL WHAT HE HAD SAID BECAUSE THE SON OF MAN WAS SHOWING THREE FORMS OF HIMSELF. The Transfiguration (This is the Apostles witnessing the Kamo of the Messiah) LUKE 9: 28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, THE APPEARANCE OF HIS FACE WAS ALTERED (another, some other), and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, TWO MEN WERE TALKING TO HIM, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Yahusha, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make THREE TENTS, three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”-NOT KNOWING WHAT HE SAID. 34 As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Yahusha WAS FOUND ALONE. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen. MARK 16:12 SHOWS US THE SON OF MAN CHANGES FORMS Mark 16:12 12 After these things he appeared in ANOTHER FORM ( G3444 outward appearance) to two of them, as they were walking into the country. ELOHIM speaks to mankind through the mouth of prophets many times. Yahusha called Himself, Son of man. Yahusha represented ELOHIM the Father to mankind by having YHVH’s Spirit upon him and speaking the words of YHVH to people. Luke 3:22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him IN BODILY FORM, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “YOU ARE MY BELOVED SON; WITH YOU I AM WELL PLEASED.”

No religious Jew anywhere will say G-d's name. It's always pronounced ado-nai. It's deeply offensive to say that it's only heretical Jews won't pronounce it. No Jew should pronounce it and no Jew will pronounce it. It was only pronounced in the past on Yom Kippur by the Kohen Hagadol in the Kadosh Kadoshim.

This is a nice resource, but I really don't think it's the place of a Christian to dictate which Jewish practices are legitimate, even when cherry picking a few rabbis who might do something in certain circumstances. That's a pretty irresponsible message to send to students. Stay in your lane and we won't tell you you're doing Christianity wrong because some sects might have a different custom or interpretation.

It seems quite dishonest, yes. I have never known any Jews to say aloud the name of God. This man largely superimposes his own beliefs on a text that really isn't his to dictate. Which tells me, beyond his poor pronunciation, he doesn't truly comprehend the text he is teaching.

Are The Man-Made Vowel-Marks Inspired, Or Corrupting Influences? The Hebrew scholars of today fully defend the uninspired vowel manipulations that have corrupted the phonology of Hebrew. The Hebrew letters as they were originally written without these vowel marks enable future generations to “call” on the Name (see Psalm 102:18), but the Masoretes’ niqqud marks were designed to do the opposite. They divert a reader away from pronouncing the Name. They have caused great damage to the language, and caused His people to “howl.” (see YashaYahu 52:5, also Psalm 2)

Honest question, sir: If we were to destroy all the Masoretic works as heresy, what texts would we draw a complete Tanakh from? Thank you and peace to you.

Keep in mind that the modern Hebrew has been distorted with other outside influences. The Responsible party that twisted the letter alef (A) into ayin (E), was by a Karaite sect called the Masoretes. This same sect began with Anan Ben David in 767 CE/AD, this sect of Masoretes (traditionalists) did not want anyone uttering the true Name YOD-HAY-UAU-HAY as "Yahuah," so they invented vowel distortions with niqqud and cantillation marks to train those reading Hebrew to mispronounce words. ALAHIM (or ALAHYM) became "ELOHIM." YAHU became YEHO. They left the name ABRAHIM alone for some unknown reason, otherwise it would be EBRAHIM today. The Hebrew root "AL" (ALEF-LAMED) became "EL." This root is not a name of any kind, it is a pronoun implying lofty, upward, highness, strength, mightiness, etc. The Israeli airline EL-AL means to go + upward. EL-AL is spelled ayin-lamed (EL) + alef-lamed (AL). YAHUAH ALAHIM fully translated means: "I WAS, I AM, I WILL BE (your) MIGHTY ONE." Conclusion: What is a vowel, or a better question would be, what's the basic & actual meaning of a vowel,? Answer: A speech sound produced without occluding, diverting, or obstructing the flow of air from the lungs. The modern letter V would not be according to the definition stated above, however the letter V back then was equal to our much modern letter U, an example would be, the arch of Titvs, today that would be, the arch of Titus. Also the letter W is also somewhat a modern letter, otherwise it's just that, A Double UU! So technically the common word known as noun, could be spelled nown, otherwise phonetically they would sound the same etc. Anyway, the vowels ALEF, AYIN, HAY, YOD, UAU of Hebrew are written down to be sounded letters. These became the Greek and Latin vowels we use in English, A E I O U. Yusef Ben MattithYahu (aka Flavius Josephus) said He saw the Name written in four Hebrew vowels (not the Aramaic script mistakenly called “modern Hebrew”). All written letters represent sounds. I submit the Masoretes (traditionalists) and their attempted alterations cannot be trusted! Due to the Masoretes, we inherited the idea it is ELI, giving the form ELIYAHU (aka Elijah). The true Hebrew name is ALIYAHU. The ALEF-LAMED is best transliterated as AL, not so much as EL.
