The crescent moon-shaped red blood cells in sickle cell anemia are a consequence of the abnormal hemoglobin S molecules polymerizing and distorting the shape of the red blood cells under certain conditions. In other words, the red blood cells become crescent moon-shaped due to a genetic mutation in the hemoglobin protein. Hope this could be helpful!
