Probably the most famous "music group" of the 20th century and their most famous song. It's not often that you have a member of your group who is in the top five playes of a particular musical instrument. Each of the four Led Zeppelin members are probably in the top three of their instruments.

So there I was with my Led Zeppelin ticket for Wembley Arena around 1973/74 in North West London and my team lost at home on that Saturday. I was drenched in South East London and at 19 did not drive. To finish me off a Fishmonger accidentally threw boiling hot water over my legs as I returned home, as I lived over a large market. I decided NOT to go out by Public Transport to the other side of London after all that and NEVER did get to see Led Zeppelin who reformed for a few gigs 10 years ago minus the original drummer and tickets cost £200 or $250.... MY TICKET FOR 1973/74 ??????....................75 PENCE or ONE DOLLAR !

Honestly, you nailed it, with "it makes me yearn for something". There's really not much more to it, he was just trying to convey an atmosphere to go with the music, but that's why it also works, because it's notoriously open to different interpretations, while Robert wrote these lyrics, just to accompany the anthemic style of Jimmy's themes on the guitar. You should react to the live version though, all the ladies love the singer, lol

Medieval fantasy music..........I'm an Englishman, and hearing those opening chords always transports me back to the middle ages - a mystical world full of enchanted forests, elves and golden haired maidens! A lot of Zeppelin's songs were heavily influenced by JRR Tolkien, and it really shows on this classic.........I think, deep down inside, we're all yearning to return to some point in human history when there was still a sense of magic and wonder in this world......when knights fought with dragons, communities pulled each other through the bleakest of winters and darkness could be overcome with the swipe of a sword. My two cents...

The song speaks on transitions, life, death, positive, negative, love, hate. Everything is interconnected, just like looking to the west and saying goodbye, the life span of a day ends in the west (sunset)and we look to the east for a new beginning (sunrise). In essence, it's a representation of the circle of life.

It is a folk song written for its time. It is, for me, about mother nature. About the May Queen when the hedgerows at the side of British roads come to life with all sorts of life. But we are on a path which is killing all wild life, but we can change the road we are on. Buying her stairway to heaven is not with money, but with looking after life. That is greatest credit.

The first time I heard this song was at a 6th grade dance (2001). I was doing great slow dancing like a champ. Hands on the hip and side stepping like a pro. Then that riff kicked in and I stood there not know what the hell to do. With a girl I really liked and being terrified to "fast dance". All while having to take in what the actual fuck I was hearing for the first time. She just walked away after seeing the panicked look on my face. I went home and asked my parents for a guitar and never looked back. Here's to forever letting the Led out.

I am PRETTY sure someone commented this already, but just in case... this band's guitar player, Jimmy Page, recorded the song "Come with Me" with Puff Daddy, where he plays the riff to Kashmir, another excellent Led Zeppelin song. So there's a connection to hip hop here. :)

Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are the pinnacle of rock & roll, for 10 ten years there's not a bad song on any of their albums. Others to sample: Heart's "Crazy on You", "Magic Man", "Barracuda" - Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon", "The Chain", "Go Your Own Way" - Bob Seger's(The voice of rock & roll) "Night Moves", "Turn the Page", "Against the Wind".

So if you like the vibe this song gives off, check out by Led Zeppelin songs like The Rain Song, That's The Way, Going to California, Ten Years Gone, Thank You....But then there's this whole other side to them where they crank up the volume and speed and you have tracks like Immigrant Song, Achilles Last Stand, Trampled Under Foot, then songs that kind of exist in the middle like No Quarter and Dazed and Confused. There's a reason this band is considered one of, if not, the best classic rock/hard rock bands. They had a huge gambit of sound and songs ranging from blues, bluegrass, rock, experimental, folk and everything in between. You're just scratching the surface here. I envy you! I wish I could hear these songs for the first time again.

It's great that you've discovered Led Zeppelin! You're at the beginning of an amazing journey! With approximately 350 million units sold, Led Zeppelin are the 5th biggest selling musical artists of all time, behind only; #4) Michael Jackson with approximately 400 million units sold, #3) Garth Brooks with approximately 500 million units sold, #2) Elvis Presley with approximately 750 million units sold, and #1) The Beatles with approximately 2.1 BILLION units sold. Other reactors are getting a ton of hits from listening to Zeppelin. If you decide to continue to react to Zep, I would listen to the studio version of "Since I've Been Loving You" next. That's a good starting point. The magic of Led Zeppelin was in the amazing studio productions of Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin's guitarist and founder, who produced all of Led Zeppelin's albums. I wouldn't do the live version of any of their songs, at least until you've heard the studio version first. Same as any other kind of music out there, whether it's Chris Brown, Khalid, Michael Jackson or Led Zeppelin, the studio versions are always just gonna sound better, for a multitude of reasons, including the fact that in the studio, they're using $10,000 Neumann u47 microphones, as opposed to $100 Shure sm58 live microphones on stage. Plus. the studio versions also tend to get blocked a lot less by KZfaq. Peace

I think the trick to understanding this song lyrically is to realize that the song isn't really about one thing in particular. He's using words to sort of paint an abstract picture of a series of emotions. It's sort of like a literary version of a Jackson Pollock painting. I could be wrong about this, but that's the way I've always thought about it.

So glad someone recommended this to you but even More so that you FELT it and enjoyed it! The song’s interpretations are to each listener-their own, but on the surface its essentially mostly about Death at the end of [everyone’s] life and whatever conflicting feelings that are had with either how fulfilled, or not, our individual lives are therein. The ‘Piper’ is a referential twist to an old German folk lore ‘The Pied Piper’ of Hamelin in this song and can be equated to that of The Angel of Death (The Reaper). 'The May Queen' is also a reference but to the Pagan goddess of spring/ summer; a bringer of warmth and comfort, I guess. The uncertain emotions one feels towards the tune throughout may be conveyed as the assimilated feelings one has towards their demise. By the end of the song [life] one can ‘hope’ to be comforted by/with Death if at least not content and accepting of it, for evidently it is an inescapable inevitability.
