back door man = old Blues lingo. but do you think Robert Plant was worried about hiding from the neighbors? "Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings." -- RP. "shake for me girl, i wanna be your back door man..." it's pretty obvious what he's talking about. back door = anal has been around since 1592 according to Green's Dictionary of Slang.

Imagine how we felt, those of us lucky enough to experience it in concert and when they just came out with their albums, while coming off of a decade where the Beatles were singing "I wanna hold ur hand"

In blues vocabulary, a "back-door man" is just a man on the side. When the husband leaves openly by the front door, the boyfriend sneaks in by another route. Of course, Led Zeppelin did name an album In Through The Out Door, but that's a story for another day.

When Led Zeppelin formed in England in 1968, Jimmy Page (guitar) was the band's taskmaster... He had the powerful voice of Robert Plant and the rock solid drumming of John Bonham and the studio expertise of bassist John Paul Jones... So, he was inspired to make this 'heavy' rock sound that was completely new. The first Zeppelin album was recorded in days and featured a few covers mixed in w/ original songs and it was a huge hit in 1969 as the band toured America. The band spent hours off tour in the studio recording the 2nd album 'Led Zeppelin II'... it had more original songs and it went #1 on the US charts in the Fall of 1969 and scored this top 40 hit - 'Whole lotta love'...🔥🔥 In the studio, Jimmy Page had ideas of overdubbing sounds on the basic tracks, which was new technology at the time... He also used guitar effects and experimented w/ sounds coming from the amps and w/ microphones (the sounds captured on tape varied when mics were used at varying distances from their equipment) When Zeppelin recorded acoustic songs, they would record in the countryside and wouldn't be bothered if a plane flew over them... They wanted the sonic 'imperfections' to be part of their sound. During the time in his previous band The Yardbirds, Jimmy Page would use a violin bow across his guitar to create a variety of eerie sounds... that was what made it on the Zeppelin record... The 'interlude' on 'Whole lotta love' was a patchwork of bongos, guitar sounds, vocal overdubs etc... His guitar riffs were made heavier w/ John Paul Jones' bass and John Bonham's powerhouse beats... Led Zeppelin combined their 50's blues inspirations w/ the newer 60's rock bands like Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Cream, The Kinks ... and created what would become heavy metal music. By 1971, they were THE biggest band in the world 🤘🤘

THE greatest Rock quartet ever. Pioneers of huge stadium gigs and VERY LOUD Rock. I think you may have misinterpreted the lyrics - they're classic Blues sentiments so often use sexually charged phrases and metaphors (the metaphor, for example, "Back Door Man" refers to having a secret lover who has to sneak into the house, whereas "I wanna give you my love, every inch of my love" probably means something more literal). The 'car' and other sounds were all made by Jimmy Page, the guitarist, who used various techniques (including using a cello bow and a theremin-type box that twisted and distorted guitar sounds) to achieve his aims. There is a movie/Rockumentary of their 1974 Madison Square Garden gig called 'The Song Remains The Same', which has awesome performances of all their greaqtest songs, as well as loads of weird and interesting pieces in between, showing their lives at home and on the road. Probably impossible to react to it as it will get blocked but well worth watching in private.

Jimmy made the sound of a car passing with a violin bow. I seen them in concert in 1973 with my dad who was a drummer and was teaching me the drums. But when I seen Jimmy play the 🎸 I was hooked. I spent day and night learning Zeps songs back then it was hard to find sheet music. You buy there vinyl albums and play them over and over to learn. Had to prove to dad I could play the guitar. Not to long ago I seen Jimmy pages astrology birth chart and realize why I was drawn to his style of playing. He is a Capricorn with Scorpio rising. I am a Capricorn with a Scorpio rising.😮

John Bonham, RIP, was one of the greatest drummers ever and the "car" sound was made by a technique called pick sliding or pick scraping. Jimmy Page was experimental with musical sounds, like using a bow to playing the guitar like a cello and using a Theremin to create the distorted sounds on this this song as well as on No Quarter by Zeppelin. Great reaction, as usual. 🙌✌️

Back door man didn't have quite the same meaning back then. It was an old jazz term for cheating with another mans wife, but your reaction to it made my day. Loving this channel ❤️

2:39 You can make all sorts of noises from a guitar using all sorts of items, using a violin bow to slide across the strings to make a haunting sound is one of them.

Jimmy Page is using a Theremin during the break to get those noises/sounds. Also, the technique where the sound is moving back and forth between the headphone speakers is called panning.

Just to really carve into this topic, I believe it got its name from "panorama", in that it took full advantage of the stereo stage.

"Captivating" is a great word for Zeppelin! Very cool to see you as a "captive" audience! If you like the harder stuff like this, I would recommend, oh, at random here (they have SO many bangers!), "The Ocean" (funky!) or "Trampled Under Foot" (also funky, but "louder.") For their "soft (acoustic, etc) side, try the lovely "Going to California" and/or "What is and What Should Never Be."

Ur reactions are infectious, well appreciated, and like you that back door lyric was far out there and surprisingly unexpected. I laughed out loud and your reaction and at 70, having just lost my wife to cancer, I needed this reaction. No, back then, if you got caught listening to this, you were grounded.

Hey Maddy! My first time here and your reaction is fun and refreshing. Thank you. Four of the top musicians at the time all joined into one incredible band. Led Zeppelin remains one of the greatest, most influential, bands of all time. They were one of the first to rely on album sales as opposed to the traditional singles market for the radio charts. Led Zeppelin has a long list of excellent tracks to explore. While they started out as almost strictly a heavy Rock version of Blues, they quickly expanded into so many different styles. Pick almost any Zep song and you can't go wrong. This song is an adaptation of an old Chicago Blues song written by the great Willie Dixon and performed by Muddy Waters, one of the best of a long list of Blues greats. The phrase "back door man" isn't exactly the obvious connotation. It actually means someone who steps in your back door while you're going out the front door to go to work. In essence, your partner is cheating. Older Blues used many metaphors that represented different aspects of life. A perfect example is any mention of trains, train stations or railroads, is a reference to freedom - the underground railroad that brought many slaves to a better life.

🤩👌💥💯🎼 The amount of sexuality pulled on this oldie goldie blues song by Big Mama(credits to her) is over flowing on composition in this version... "🎼 Every inch of my Love 🎶" 🙈🔥😹 Amuzingly entertaining reaction mi lady. 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙

The "backdoor man" lyric refers to a man sneaking out the backdoor of a married woman's residence, as her husband is coming in the front. Otherwise, you're spot on about what this song is all about. The great lead guitarist, Jimmy Page, was using a violin "bow" on his guitar, BTW. The "car" sound is produced by sliding the fingers along the guitar's neck, in a particular chord, sometimes accompanied by wiggling or swinging the guitar. This band is rock 'n' roll ROYALTY! Thanks for your reaction.

"🎼 Shake for me gal, I wanna be your backdoor man...🎶" is a referance to a bit different thing than entering in a residence from the back door... 😹 And the "car" sounds are ratherly made with a 'Slide'. A tube of glass or more oftenly tube of metal around the finger(usually on the little finger) sliding on the strings up and down the neck + extra effects on sound pulled off in studio. 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙 💯 💥

Thanks Maddy for doing my requested pick! Welcome to a very early and young Led Zeppelin! Robert Plant, the singer was only 20 years old when this was recorded in 1969 and yeah let’s say he had very little else on his mind at that time lol! Truly groundbreaking song that propelled Zeppelin into the 1970s with a zillion other imitators behind them. But this band has a wide variety and different genres of music and looking forward to you discovering them more through time. Thanks! Best, Ed.
