No surprise, you love Roberts hair, with that great hair you’ve got rocking too! I was privileged to be at this show July 29, 1973 when I was 15 years old… Yes, an iconic live performance that gives you the blues side of the mighty Led Zeppelin! They cover SO MANY genres and styles. Hold on tight, there’s a lot more to come! 😊

Knew you'd like this live performance Maddy. Who wouldn't?!? "Back-door man" IS "dirty" 😏, BUT the old-school blues def means a lover on the side... "I open my front door and hear my back door slam," as in I leave thru the front door to go to work (from 7-11 every night) and hear that other dude going in thru the back door.

I totally agree,@@patrice384... However, a LOT of what "they" (mainly Robert!) wrote about was borrowed from (Af-Am) old-school blues. Eventually, Zepp gave credit to a number of black bluesmen, for many of Robert's lyrics&vocalizations AND (esp Jimmy's guitar)licks!

@@snodgrassgerald2352 The critics, of course they were only comparing the concert to previous LZ concerts. Personally I think it's definitely stood the test of time. When you watch reactors react to the individual songs it's hard to imagine that they were all from the same concert, just seeing the group perform any one of them would be a highlight. I had to wait till 2 Jul '80 to see them.

This song, and "In My Time of Dying", are my two favorite LZ songs, but you rarely heard them, even in the 70's because they weren't considered commercial enough for radio. You might be surprised that back in the late 1960s and early 70's songs like this were only played on "underground" FM stations or college stations after midnight. When I was an undergrad I'd schedule afternoon classes so I could stay up until 3 or 4:00 AM and listen to all the tracks that weren't being played during the day. It was an incredible time for rock music with talent seemingly coming out of nowhere every day.. I discovered LZ completely by accident when I happened to be at the record store when the clerk was unboxing their first album. I loved their name and the cover art with the Hindenburg and bought it without knowing who they were. When I put it on the turn table I was blown away and told everyone I knew they had to hear these guys. Not long afterwards the FM stations got wind of them and started playing their more mainstream songs. As FM started growing their music got a lot more airplay and became popular; the rest is history. As you heard, they've always been inspired by blues classics and you can hear that in much of their music. So while everybody heard "Stairway to Heaven" played over and over again, some of their best music is still unknown to most people. You just discovered a gem so keep digging, there's more out there!

One thing you have to consider... back then... Most people NEVER knew what artists looked like.. their 1st exposure to an artist was typically via radio. It was only until they got an album that they'd actually see the artist picture. Back then there was only print media... no internet, no video, nothing digital. Heck TV only had 3 channels (ABC, CBS, NBC) and the only way music got on TV was something really really late at night like Don Kirshners Rock Concert... and Zep was WAY too huge for that. So the only way to see a band was to go to the gig. The only way most folks saw their favorite artists was via music magazines like Rolling Stone, Creem, Hit Parader, Kerrang!, and others. I knew a lot of girls who never went to a show.. but had their walls COVERED in posters of their favorite artists. Many of those girls had the same poster of Robert Plant on their wall and they all drooled over it... he was a Nordic god to them.

Madison Square Gardens NY 1973, probably the finest version of this song ever recorded. Zeppelin tried to make every concert unique, I think you understand what you just watched Maddy. One of a kind band, iconic in every way, hit after hit, I wonder if you ever heard Physical Graffiti, which was one of their best double records. Love that you respect the sheer talent this band had, no auto tune, just four men all the very best at what they do.

Great reaction - I just stumbled upon your channel. They just laid it all out there on the stage. Many of the critics shot down their albums and gave them bad reviews. Despite all the negative critics Led Zeppelin outsold The Rolling Stones, The Who and even Elvis Presley. Their concert tickets outsold Elvis and he requested to meet them. They all met and had a good time chatting. Led Zeppelin ruled the 1970s and never won a Grammy Award -- LOL. Two of their album cover were nominated for Grammys -- and none of their songs or music were - LOL. Check out Achilles' Last Stand from Knebworth Aug 4th, 1979 live concert video for that song. That would be six years after this performance you just watched. 220,000 people were watching them on that night at Knebworth.

Page opens with a "REAL" solo, then silence, Plant kicks in with his magnificent primal screams, silence, and Bonzo in his brilliance does a jazzy sound to pull them both together. THAT was the magic of the Mighty Zep. Bonzo could pound out the heavies with his drums, or lite it down when the mood called for it, pure genuis. Opps, should try spelling genius correctly.

I believe all the cameramen were high while filming these shows. The original intent was to film the shows and put out a live concert video, but the filming got messed up. That's why, when you watch the whole DVD/Blu Ray, Led Zep has fantasy sequences during some of the songs. Also, you will notice that many of the camera shots are not what is really being played at the time.

As a TV producer, videographer and editor for more than 25 years, the camera position is usually designated by the venue. Floor level, as to not impede concert-goers view, is very common. Obviously there are probably 3-5 cameras of which some are set up out of view on tripods and often can get the more steady shots and closeups. Hit me up for more video tips. LOL

Can't go wrong with a bit of Zep, Maddy. You're right, this live performance oozes energy. The opening solo has a deliberate strong resemblance of the middle eight solo on the Led Zep III album. It works brilliant as an introduction, smashes you in the mouth from the get go. It is such a bluesy song. This is absolutely the right one to react to and I enjoyed your views on it. When you get a mo, I'd strongly recommend listening to the studio original, not as a trade off/compare which is best, simply because I must have listened to it a thousand times, it is truly iconic!

Back then we knew bands from the radio and sometimes got to go a to concert to actually see them. Every popular band was so recognizable and unique in their sound that we knew who the band was within the first two measures of music, even if the song was a new release. MTV changed this to some extent as how a band looked on TV became what people associated with the music, and to a great extent rather than a unique sound they may have had.

"Back door man" is not what some may think. Nothing really to do with "rear" entry...the phrase refers to the lover, someone who sneaks in and leaves through the back door. There's the line in the song that explains it... "open my front door, hear my back door slam" in other words, he comes home from a hard days work and as he opens his front door and he hears his back door slam as the wife or girlfriend's lover exits hastily. Remember this is 1973 so terms were a bit different then

I’ve been working from 7-11 777 to 11. Funny I’ve listened to Led Zeppelin for 45 years and never heard Jimmy referred to as Jim. Very refreshing.

Back in the day, a "backdoor man" was the guy your gal was seeing when you're at work. "I opened my front door, heard my back door slam". He was running out the back door when they heard you drive up.

Back in the blues days a backdoor man was a guy that messed around with another guy's woman. When he got home from work the guy would sneak out the "back door". But I like where your head is. Lol

When asked recently if Robert had any advice for a frontman of a Zeppelin tribute band.........He said "Tell him to dress it to the right". Referring to best angle to put some stuffing in the jeans. ( Mick Jagger had their management insist on a cucumber for a string of shows for the Stones. )

Backdoor man had a different meaning break then. It meant as your hubby was going out the front door your lover was coming in the backdoor.

Percy paid the cameraman a few extra quid. Nah, not really. If I remember right, they made the film intending it to be seen as if you were in the front row. So, that's the view, like it or ummm, lump it. (Percy is Robert Plant's nickname).

The blues of the 1950s was a major influence on this band and other 60s and 70s bands. They reimagined the blues with a unique rock influence.

I grew up to these guys. It's been said Jimmy Page is the most difficult guitarist to duplicate. Like you said...unpredictable. That was just one of the examples of why they are the greatest rock band band to ever grace the stage.
