The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Such a talented guy. And I don’t think this song should have been sung by anybody that has a good singing voice .it needed to be sung by somebody that sounded tired, worn out, and just a wanderer.

Lee a decorated marine sergeant landed and fought at Iwa Jima-tough as it gets.Then became a renown actor-Cat Ballou is my fav,for which he won an Oscar-man one helluva life.(he gave proper thanks to horse that he truly believed helped him win the Oscar)

Evidently didn't want to sing this song (he hated singing), it took them over a week to convince him to do so, makes you wonder what it took them to make him sing win the Glee club or did they take it off the movie?

I have heard good singers try to sing this song, but NO ONE has ever done it as well as Lee Marvin! Such a classic!

Lee couldn't hold a note but he certainly made this tune his own. It was one of my dad's favourite songs it's also one of mine.

I always enjoy Lee with this song. I stopped by his burial site in Arlington several years ago and sang this song.

As a kid in 1970 I was given this 45 and I fell in love with it. This amazing appearance pre-dates the release of the single across the world. Although the single would not become a hit in the United States, it would reach #1 in UK five months after this appearance and kept the Beatles "Let It Be" out of the #1 spot.

Back in 1983, a friend and I went to a bar in Tucson, AZ and Lee Marvin was drinking there. My friend knew him, so we spent the afternoon getting drunk with him. Wish we had cell phone cameras back then.
