Blues ain't what it used to be. There's a world of difference between guys like Lefty, Luther Johnson, Otis Rush and Magic Sam and the "young lions" like Bonamassa and the large stable white guitar slingers that want to slay you with their prowess. I'm not putting these guys down because a whole lot of them can be exciting in a live situation. I'm just saying that back in the day it was the song that was important.

I"ll never forget my first trip to Chicago in the mid 80s. I was a huge Blues fan (still am) and was so excited to go to the Blues mecca of the world. I was there on business, and I knew I had to get to some Blues clubs while I was there. I researched who was playing where and ended up going to 3 different clubs that night(Kingston Mines, B.L.U.E.S, and I think Blue Chicago but the memory of the 3rd club is a little foggy). I remember having a hard time choosing who to go see since there was so much talent in Chicago, so I decided to hit 3 clubs to see 3 different performers. I saw Lefty Dizz, Son Seals, and Eddie Clearwater that night! That was one of the greatest nights of live Blues for me in the last 45 years (and I've been to literally hundreds of Blues shows and Blues festivals). All 3 performers were great, but for me Lefty Dizz was the best one that night. I got a chance to meet him before his first set and had a drink with him. His band, Shock Treatment, was really cooking and then Lefty hit the stage and just blew me away. He had quite a bag of tricks with the guitar, at one point walking out in the crowd, dragging the guitar behind him while playing it and singing. He was really something to see! What a night!!!

It's Ian Stewart keyboardist and Co-Founder of the Rolling Stones. He didn't fit the image in the early 60's of his bandmates so their manager made him work behind the scenes and they made him the Road Manager and Piano Player. However if you read up on him Mick and Keith and the band revered him.

That expression on Muddy's face at around the 6:45 point of this performance is my favorite moment of this -- that alone made it very much worthwhile to watch!!
@susandevoe6002
@susandevoe6002 2 жыл бұрын
You know, I knew Muddy really well over quite a long time, and we talked a whole lotta music & a whole lot about other music ppl & styles & instruments, etc etc. And by the expression on Muddy's face here, I don't think he really likes this Lefty Dizz at all, not really (re M's total lack of enthusiasm, & his obvious trying to look at least pleasant). But M was too polite to say or to diss a fellow musician on stage, or off-stage either, frankly. Muddy was a lovely man, who only encouraged ppl coming up in the biz, too, but he did hv his preferences, if u pressed him on it, re other blues musicians & styles. And I know M's expressions & he is not overly impressed here at all with this Lefty, or at least the performnce L. was giving that the time. M. smiles a little, looks "pleasant," & gives L.D. a sort of encouraging "carry on" pleasant kinda nod here, but that is not how M. would show enjoyment of another blues musician or style -- he's too subdued, a little cool, & especially that smile looks somewhat forced, to me. M. is just being polite here. Maybe I'm spoiled too by the great blues bands & lead singer/performers & live shows I started hearing, from back in the mid to late 60s & 70s. For me, I don't think this Lefty can sing v. well at all, & I don't like his overly-dramatic delivery (smoke & mirrors) -- I suppose to add something to cover up for his lack of voice. I don't think M. was over-enthused with the dramatics here either -- they add nothing & are actually annoying. But if you can't sing, & don't want to be just a guitarist, then you sing however you can & I guess add some tomfoolery to try to cover up your voice deficiencies, to try to keep ppl from noticing so much that u don't hv a voice. ??? I guess. That's my take on L.D., anyway -- & not someone's show I would hv bothered to go down to see. (He may hv bn the most wonderful person off-stage, you know, but I'm just talking about his performance here in this particular video.) And, I have to say, the bassist here is really good!! And Jr. Wells (whom I also knew really well) is just acting the fool again here, as he was won't to do when he was high as a kite [v. often] -- but Jr. had a great voice, & was worth any accompanying nonsense as he always delivered in the voice AND harp depts. (e.g., check him out on utube in "Little Red Rooster!!!) RIP Lefty -- sorry yr style wasn't my style. RIP Jr., thanks so much for so many great shows. RIP Muddy -- the absolute King of the Blues, in my estimation (never flashy, but, oh, so earthy, & just sooooo genuine). U r SO missed, M.

He usually played through an equally beat up Fender Twin Reverb, usually cranked up to 10. One night at the Mines I remember him throwing the strat up in the air and catching it and playing one handed. After doing this several times he reached out to catch it but missed. It hit the floor hard which gave the band a good excuse to take a break. Him and Mr. Taylor got the tools out and soldered a wire or two and next set was business as usual. Most guys playing the blues clubs in Chicago didn't have the money to buy the best instruments but it was about making what they had work. I'm far from Chicago nowdays and the thing I miss most was the music. Those were good days.

This is the year we smoked pot on Amtrak from San Jose to San Diego to see the stones at l San Diego Jack Murphy stadium, in the bubble car. Had my acoustic guitar and we sang Stones songs and smoked pot the whole way. Can't do THAT anymore! They all bought me beers too!

Founding father Ian Stewart. Ran the mobile unit too. Stones we’re lucky he stayed around. As he said ‘ I never expect to get much credit in this band’ spot on. Boogie with Stu. He and Charlie were / are the glue that t keeps the shithouse together. Rock on boys. Lol
