little fun fact for the pickledd eggs : Tyler Labine (Dale) and Alan Tudyk (Tucker) laughed so much during the scene at the gas station that they had to repeat the scene a lot, because of that Tyler ate almost 2/3 of those eggs. when you watch that scene again you see that the eggs are differently filled in every shot ^^

It's really only now occurred to me just how much this movie makes it clear that Chad wasn't simply overreacting to the Allison situation. He was trained and prepared to do violence and came looking for someone to hurt. He is strong and good at fighting. He has these wildly inappropriate skills like stringing someone up from a tree, rigging a spear trap, and axe throwing. It was his idea to come to "hillbillie" country, with seemingly no input from his friends. I'm betting that they didn't actually forget the beer, but that Chad deliberately left it behind so as to keep a clear head. He was also fiercely against seeking help from the cops, and was horrible to his friends for not sharing his bloodlust. So yeah. Chad really always was the evil in this film. Even before his face melted.

When Dale threw the ax through the air that freed Allison, that was a reference to Friday the 13th part 3. Part 3 was in 3D so there were super obvious "we're inserting things into the film to take advantage of 3D" like someone playing with a yo-yo directly into camera. There was a thrown ax that went right toward camera. The joke on this film is that it's not in 3D, so putting it in as a reference is the joke because it doesn't look like something someone would do.

The first Texas Chainsaw movie is fascinating--it's basically a horror premise shot like an art film. And yes, the chainsaw spin is a reference to that one--at the end, the killer basically does a little dance in a field. Just keep in mind that part of the "art film"-y direction it takes is "forget the tropes, we're just going to be mean-spirited and evil, like the villains are meant to be", so the horror is less "spooky jump-scares" and more "I am so very very uncomfortable".

Being from Appalachia and living in a small wooded/forested town, sometimes people would pass through from out of town and go hiking in some of the amazing trails here. There’s really nothing to do but drink or do drugs here, and my friends and I being against that stuff, we’d always go out in the woods and fuck around. Can’t tell you how many people we scared out there, by not doing anything and just minding our own business lol it’s really funny how people freak out if there’s other people in the woods with them. It’s why I love this movie so much lol I can kind of relate to Dale and Tucker.

Great reaction, love this film as a horror fan, it parodies so much of the classic horror films and turns them on their head, definitely up their with Hot Fuzz for what it does. Main play is on the Evil Dead (Reclusive cabin in the woods with no escape), but also covers Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Cabin Fever, Friday the 13th, Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn and probably a few more nods to other films in there. Either of these are good but please see the original versions, so much better. FYI Simone, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original) not as gory as you'd think. Hills Have Eyes however, probably the more horrific of the titles mentioned.

Also as a fun fact, the movie was first cut as the college-kids point if view, but got changed before the release. 2nd fun fact, in deadpool 2, when Cable goes back in time he first meets to guys drinking and chilling with their pick up truck, that is Ducker and Dale

I live in the state where this takes place. This was filmed in your neck of the woods, because it doesn't look anything like that around here (kinda wish it did sometimes, though it is really beautiful here). One of the best things about this movie (aside of everything) is the fact that the only person that comes close to a decent Appalachian accent is the damn Canadian (Tyler Labine/Dale). You might recognize him from Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He plays the scientist/handler who gets infected from that sneeze. And you're thinking of the Hills Have Eyes, which also takes place in WV! I promise it's not like that around here. I've had to fend off murderous inbred lunatics like 2, maybe 3 times tops. Also, revolvers don't have a safety catch like semi auto handguns. The only safety is the heavy trigger pull. They probably did that on purpose though, there are a lot of little references and easter eggs in this movie. Dale was, however, holding the safety back on the nail gun, which you have to do if you want to fire one at something that isn't point-blank wood.

you could argue that Deliverence (1971) was probably the first big instance of the Killer Hillybilly trope...or the class terror genre if you like, not the first apearance but the most significant as it had such an impact on mainstream popular culture.Texas Chain Saw Massacre two years later really cemented it. Texas chain saw in a much more layered fashion though; its smarter and well observed in its protaganists and offers satirical commentary on everthing from media violence in the shadow of vietnam war(Deliverance wears its Vietnam allusions on its sleeve), the forgotten rural class, and the consumption of meat. It's a siminal masterpiece. As with most these things, the films that followed and refined the trope took only the superfical surface: the chainsaw, the checkshirts and the dead bodies.

Cabin in the Woods (2011) also has a very strong aspect of satire that you might have largely missed if you aren't well versed in the genre back catalogue classics. Sigorney Weaver's presence in Sci-fi or Horror pretty much signals satire or parody, at least in the last few decades. Now that you've done the Cornetto Trilogy, you need to see Paul (2011), for instance. It's a great satire of fandom, alien abductions, social commentary tropes, stoner culture, and sci-fi thrillers. And either a tribute to, or a satire of, the Cornetto Trilogy, sort of an honorary fourth trilogy movie, but not, also, a way of including the US in something very fun and British, while keeping the British part properly British. Good fun.

Deliverance (1972) is one of the seminal "hillbilly horror" films and is a really interesting film, many levels above the typical horror. Directed by visionary director John Boorman (Point Blank, Excalibur, Hell in the Pacific), it stars Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds, in one of his best performances. Southern Comfort (1981) is an often overlooked entry in the hillbilly category. Like Deliverance, it's more a psychological horror, rather than a visceral, blood and guts shocker.

Joy Ride is a really underrated horror movie you guys should check out. It’s not super scary, more like a thriller with horror elements. Also it has the beautiful Paul Walker and the hilarious Steve Zahn.

The gas station scene seemed at least distantly related to I Spit On Your Grave, and of course, a wood chipper was a prominent supporting actor in Fargo.

I had an ass-kicking day at work and saw this in my feed; no question, had to watch it with you guys because it's a cult classic & I *KNEW* Simone would have a small crush on how sweet Dale was & George would pick up on a lot of other horror movie tropes being turned comedic. It needs a sequel in the worst way.

Since you didn't mention it, it's worth noting that this film was made by a Canadian production company, filmed in Alberta, and many of the actors were Canadian. That includes Tyler Labine (Dale) who has been in over 100 TV Shows and films since 1991, but is still practically unknown.

There's a classic that I know that you guys would love. LITTLE BIG MAN. It's Dustin Hoffman's finest role. It also has Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway, and several other big names, but it's still one of the most underrated movies despite it being one of the greatest Westerns ever. It's one of my all time favorites.

Best hillbilly movie ever was Deliverance (1972) staring Burt Reynolds in an amazing dramatic role. This is a must see. There are scenes in this movie you will never forget. "Squeal like a pig" and "You have a perty mouth".

“Dale” did another horror comedy called Cottage County If you’re looking for similar horror comedy, I’d say The Final Girls 2015 the one with younger farmiga sister

Dale is played by the Canadian actor, Tyler Labine from Brampton. He's pretty funny, sometimes, in Hulu's Deadbeat series.

It pays homage to most of the horror classics, The cabin (Evil Dead), The Hills have eyes, wolf Creek, for your " Wrong turn" Horror, Friday the 13th with the lake setting and the perspective of the college kids, Texas Chainsaw for sure, they definitely were inspired by some hard hitters, that much is obvious after watching.
