One of the most mesmerizing scenes in cinema history was due to this classic alternative 80s songs… In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel. The song only went to #26 on the charts but after being used in the John Cusack/ Cameron Crowe film Say Anything it became massive. This video tells why it should’ve been a #1 hit who it was written for and how it was chosen for this 1989 teen romance.

That's an easy one, Adam. It's gotta be the soundtrack to hot tub time machine. Spandau ballet, inxs, cutting crew, public enemy, talking heads, motley crue, men without hats, rick Springfield. All those incredible artists songs are featured in that movie. It's an awesome soundtrack. Infact, I'm going to watch the film again this evening. 👍

The movie wasn't very good, but one of the best soundtracks I've heard was for "Great Expectations" in the late '90's. So many great songs: Sunshower by Chris Cornell, Siren by Tori Amos, Life in Mono by Mono, Lady Your Roof Brings Me Down by Scott Weiland, Wishful Thinking by Duncan Sheik, Today by Poe, Her Ornament by The Verve Pipe. They all got a fair amount of airplay on Alternative Radio. The album even included an old classic, Uncle John's Band by the Grateful Dead!

In 2012, Peter Gabriel celebrated the 25th anniversary of So by playing it live in concert, with the original recording musicians, and playing all the tracks. I had the privilege of seeing him perform at the Santa Barbara Bowl on that tour. At the very end, he was talking about the impact In Your Eyes had and he paid compliments to Cameron Crowe and John Cusack. He then brought both out on stage, with the boom box of course, for the song. Brought the house down. It was simply amazing.

Say Anything was a nothing movie in 1989 it made 21 million dollars. It was not a hit movie. Because of cable tv over the last 30 some odd years females have fallen in love with it. The boombox scene is lame. The movie is a terrible chick flick. Chick flicks all have a scene like this in them. At the end of the film the guy has to do something to impress the woman he has wronged. Typical chick flick garbage.

I remember when "SO" was released. The critics accused Gabriel of betraying his "Progressive rock" fans, and the tracks were either too long or too tame for 80's radio. It, of course, became a legendary album. I wish he was releasing more new music these days.

I love Peter Gabriel's music, because as a psychologist, it is just full of psychological angst, exploration, turmoil, grief, and deep work. Maybe that's one reason his music resonates with others; the shared vulnerability and experience touches others and gives voice and expression to their own inner struggle. Thanks for this episode!

I love the music for john Cusack's later film, hot tub time machine. When they walk into the ski lodge and it Dawns on them that they could actually have travelled back to the 80s. The music playing is the safety dance. Gives me nostalgia overload every time I see it. But the movie that always makes me shed a tear is planes, trains, and automobiles. At the end when the song "every time you go away" starts playing. Gets me every time.

However, as the main format was still vinyl and based on how "In Your Eyes" needed to be cut into vinyl it had to be the first song on side two. Peter wanted it to be played loud and this the only way to do it on vinyl. When is was remastered digitally Peter moved it to the last track as originally planned. It makes more sense.

Accepting all I’ve done and said I want to stand and stare again Till there’s nothing left out Oh it remains there in your eyes Whatever comes and goes I will hear your silent call And I will touch this tender wall Till I know I’m home again ...And then that INCREDIBLE voice of Paula Cole’s. I never knew such incredible songs could be expounded on and improved upon until I heard Peter’s _Secret World Live._ The man is incredible because he can put the entire soul and essence of humanity into a recording. But what I think makes him truly outstanding is how he highlights the special talents of every single member of his band when he plays live, providing an even richer experience than his carefully crafted studio recordings. Peter Gabriel’s music may be written by him and arranged by him, but he is an artist’s artist who makes the music not just about him, but instead about everyone around him. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone reinterpret his own music as many times as he has. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show with one man’s name on it become a show about everyone in the band and everywhere around the world. The man loves the art and will sacrifice his being the centerpiece of it to create better art. There are no other Peter Gabriels. Fantastic video! I will now have to dive down the rabbit hole of your prior videos, as this the first of yours I’ve seen. I can’t wait to see your full Peter Gabriel video...honestly...I don’t think a feature length film could document everything he’s done with music. He really is special.

I will say as someone who has turned off classic rock radio - it regurgitates the same top 50 or so rock songs from each year for about a 25 year period, the bigger hits played more often, it gets repetitive, so I switched to a thumb drive in the car with songs I like that are more obscure - but watching these videos and learning more about some of these songs has given me a new appreciation of them. But then I never turned them off because they were bad, it's just that hearing the same song 12 times in three days gets old even when I really like it.

As soon as i saw the poster i went to watch the movie online. I'm 22 but this song is so emotional to me, i associate it with my dad. And now i've seen that iconic scene with the Boombox in context. It's a freaking good dayyyy thanks a lot for the vídeo!!!! 💜💜💜✨✨✨✨🤟🤟🤟

Love love love this song-still gives me chills this day. Can't believe this song was allegedly written about Rosanna Arquette. She's not good enough for this song 🤣 and of course the Say Anything scene made me want to watch this movie. I'd love you to do a video on Mercy Street-easily my favorite song of his.

The maxi single, extended version of “In Your Eyes” is wonderful. More vocals of Yousu N’dor and an intro line (which is repeated later in the original release) - “accepting all I’ve done and said, I want to stand and stare again. Til there’s nothing left out. Oh, it remains there in your eyes.”

Tbh, Peter Gabriel's film soundtracks are my top 3 favorite film soundtrack albums ever (1. Passion - Music from The Last Temptation of Christ | 2. Birdy | 3. Long Walk Home - Music from The Rabbit-Proof Fence). I listen to all three of these ALL the time - while working, painting, studying, reading, whenever. But "Passion" really is the greatest film soundtrack ever created.

In the movie Say Anything, this song is playing on the radio of Lloyd Dobbler's Chevy Malibu while he and Diane Court make sweet love for the first time. That is what makes it so poignant when he is playing it for her to hear on his boombox...over his head...when she had just told him that she wanted to take a break from their relationship. It's as much of an Alanis Morissette or Stevie Nicks moment as men are allowed. Im glad Prof mentioned that Peter Gabriel's lyrics for the song are meant to be as applicable to a woman you love as they are to God. Peter has a lot of great religious imagery and intention to much of his work. Many astute music fans will remember that he did the soundtrack for The Last Temptation of Christ, which has been my favorite instrumental album since the 90s.

"Stripped" may have worked at the time but I think that "In Your Eyes" made it timeless. As for greatest soundtrack, I would have to say the soundtrack for the movie Highlander. It is the only time where I watched a movie and was immersed in the soundtrack throughout the movie while watching the movie. Queen did an awesome job.

And here's something weird, a connection between "in Your Eyes", and "Mystery Science Theater 3000", as the music video features clips from a short subject called "Design for Dreaming" which would be riffed on MST3-K years Later. ("12 to the Moon")

My wife and I got married in 2006. We weren't sure that we'd ever have a song. About a year after we were married, we were listening to the local classic rock station and "In Your Eyes" played. We both instantly knew it would be our song. Since then, it has become more true than not, with my wife teaching (working for our survival). Fifteen years later, whenever it comes on we hold hands, snuggle up, even dance a little, to our teenagers' groans. It's truly a beautiful song!

Gen-Xer here. I was introduced to "Boh-Rap" when it was released in the 70's. I was 9 years old & won the "Night at the Opera" album by ringing up a radio station & singing a few lines of "Boh-Rap" over the phone. I gave the LP to my mum for a birthday present. It's revival in Waynes World was a pleasant surprise to me, then a sound guy/roadie for a local heavy metal/hard rock cover band.

I'll have to look to see if you did a segment on "Stripped". I'm glad you pointed out it's romance. It's not what you assume on it's cover, it's about letting someone in to the person you really are without any peer pressure, to strip away the performances necessary to fit in with the crowd.
