@BirminghamMadeNB Highly doubt Ronaldo sat at home watching videos from the 1950s of Didi taking freekicks. (Assuming that the quality of video from back would even really show him Didi's technique.) His coaches and teammates at ManU have all said Ronaldo would stay hours after training to practice freekicks on his own. Maybe he came up with a style similar to Didi's, but he invented his own form of knuckleball (that was a lot more accurate and powerful than Didi's BTW).

@BirminghamMadeNB LOL I'm not disputing Didi might have invented the first knuckleball and I have no problem with you wanted to pay homage to him. The thing I didn't agree with was when you said "someone taught Ronaldo that knuckleball technique, it wasn't something he invented." My argument is that Ronaldo wasn't taught how to kick a knuckleball by anyone, and did come up with it on his own, so did technically invent his own style of freekick. Even if some other footballer from the 50s, that Ronaldo probably hadn't even heard of, might have done it first.

i played volleyball since a kid, and i can tell u that there's that technique of hitting the ball serving, making it change direction as it goes...u get the valve up and hit it straight, in the middle...if done right, very dificult to defend. the first time i saw Ronaldo score like that, it was the first thing i thought.

Juninho was playing at the same time, all he had to do is to watch a Lyon match on a TV and you'd copy how he does it...he used all kinds of freekick techniques, spins, bouncing shots, pure knuckleballs and knuckle balls with a bit of swirl

In my opinion he left United too early. His first two seasons at Madrid he did basically nothing, and two years after he left United was in the final. I think the real success started in like 2013

Youre just as ignorant as the “kids who started watching in 2010”. Messi and ronaldo both are two of the greatest footballers ever but cant be compared since they are so different from one another. The only thing ronaldo has that Messi doesnt is the physicality and he makes that up with his incredible balance. My personal opinion is that Messi is the better player because he gives the right ball to the right person in the right moment with the perfect speed. I wish Fergie hadn't broken them off when Berbatov came coz that made Tevez feel bad seeing Utd sign Berbatov but never made his loan move permanent. Ronaldo was always big game player, but like all youngsters, he needed time to develop. Every player can have few bad big games, look at the bigger picture. Guy is amazing footballer, period. For example Cantona gets admiration and recognition, because yes, he was fantastic at times, but he is also a little overrated because of his personality - he was the coolest, yes. But Ronaldo, opposite to Cantona, is often hated, because of his personality, he is very misunderstood. If people were able to remove their prejudice, we could have honest discussion.
