This is a dream come true. The 5YL storyline was the start of my US comic book collection, the team had grown adult just like I had (LSH hadn't been published in Germany since 1984). It was a joy to unravel the puzzle, loved the 9 panel grid and the tons of information you could get out of one single issue. Loved that this was rather a SciFi dystopia than a regular superhero story. The overall storyline is phenomenal, was way ahead of its time and basically, with this volume you have the bulk of the 5YL storyline - a second storyline is not really needed. So glad you showcased this treasure, I got it the day it came out even though I have all the single issues. ❤️🙏👍

It was kind of the same for me. No, it was exactly the same for me. This was my introduction to the Legion of Super-Heroes and I loved it all. I keep rereading the single issues because the storylines are just that good. They dared to do things that were never attempted before (well, not that I can recollect). The only thing I dislike about this omnibus, is the ugly wraparound cover. But once I saw it removed then it is just wow wow wow.

@@Lang7 I have the whole run to a friend a long time ago and he's talking about how good it was to today - and he never read a Legion comic book before. Wonderful review Uncanny Omar! The key with the LSH was that they were created at a time of optimism in America shortly after WW2 and all of the great space television serials (Lost in Space, Outer Limits, etc). The Shooter-Curt Swan era of Adventure Comics had some of the greatest stories including the Death of Ferro Lad. Then when they took over Superboy's own comic you had great art by Mike Grill and by Dave Cockrum - each had their own distinctive runs - this took place around the time of Paul Levitz's first run which included an amazing one-shot story written & illustrated by Jim Starlin when the comic was double-sized and featured Ultra Boy as the main character for that issue - yes Steve Ditko then was the artist for some time but that was during a period when his artistic talents began to fade a bit, but then Levitz returned with Pat Broderick (remember Marvel's Micronauts?) and when Broderick left, we got the famed Levitz/Giffen/Mahlsted run which gave us the Great Darkness Saga and a creative team equal in some respects to the Claremont/Byrne/Austin triumvirate. Great stories from these creators followed and then as you said, there was a hiatus and then the 5 Years Later period which was spectacular - at this point Giffen heavily influenced by a South American artist had changed his style (first seen in his fabulous Dr. Fate 4-issue mini-series co-plotted by writer JM DeMatteis) and adopted the Alan Moore-Dave Gibbons Watchmen 9-panel/page format (which had been originally pioneered by Steve Ditko in the Dr Strange run he did back in the 1960s in the pages of Strange Tales). Then there were no great Legion stories UNTIL the amazing Legion Lost run by Abett/Lanning and then the Legion Annual from five or six years ago by Levitz/Giffen featuring the Emerald Empress. Bendis is currently writing the Legion but I have no idea if its any good. Sorry for the long comment.

I bought this off the rack back in the day. It’s one of my favorite comic runs ever. Oddly enough, I wasn’t a huge legion fan. Basically my favorite legionnaires either were dead, radically changed, or missing. I think 80% of the Easter eggs planted went right over my head. Aside from Cosmic Boy and Mon El, they might have been all new characters. But...the book is soooo GOOD it didn’t even matter. I had to read the letters pages just trying to figure out what’s going on. It’s super dense and actually worked on one issue a month. I LOVED this, and hate that it doesn’t get the love it deserves. Plus, I think Giffen draws some SEXY women.
@MightyAvengingLeo
@MightyAvengingLeo Жыл бұрын
My first Legion stories were the Earthwar Saga and I loved the Levitz run from that point forward. Still, the "Five Years Later" storyline might be my favorite Legion storyline. Jo Nah was my favorite Legionnaire because he was powerful like Superboy and Mon-El, but had more of an underdog feel because of the one-power-at-a-time limitation. For those not familiar with The Legion, Jo Nah grew up on a planet ruled by the criminal underworld, at one point was on the run from the law due to being framed for the murder of An Ryd, and spent time as a space pirate...all BEFORE the five-year break. Seeing him as the underworld figure/freedom fighter in the "Five Years Later" storyline was a natural evolution and really caught the essence of the character. To a lesser degree, I felt like most of the other heroes' evolutions made sense (most but not all). The one early issue of this run that had the parlay between Mordru and Rokk Krinn was greatness, too. It's been many years so I might forget the details, but the scenes where it would switch from Rokk's thoughts to Mordru's thoughts were awesome characterization and great comic writing. As menacing and powerful as Mordru was, it humanized the old villain in a masterful way. Giffen had guts with his storytelling, too. I won't give away too many spoilers, but I remember two issues in a row ended with truly massive, cosmic changes to the whole universe -- it was grand and daring storytelling. I liked it a little less when Giffen was no longer the main storyteller, but this whole era of the Legion is well worth the read.

The biggest problem with Legion of superheroes continuity is nothing to do with the actual "LEGION". It's due to DC rebooting their mainstream continuity so often, so they feel they have to retcon the whole LSH history. They could've just left it alone and kept it as "A Possible Future". Thanks for this.
@Solitaire001

I don't fault the Legion's Creative Teams for the problems. I blame it on the rest of DC for either not seeing the ramifications of their various reboots or not caring about the ramifications. To me, the Pocket Universe was a fairly neat way to fix the continuity problems introduced by Superman never being a Superboy. While it would required some small adjustments (such as explaining Mon-El), it was a workable solution that would have allowed The Legion to continue without any reboots.

Ok DC. Let's talk about the trust issues you have given me . I've got 2 volumes of Legionnaires sitting on my self. The reboot legion was my intro into the Legion and I love it. It broke my heart when I had to just accept Volume 3 was never going to happen m. But that's okay. You can't just make a trade paperback for me. You need interest. Next to that I've got 2 volumes if The Legion. The Abbnet and Lanning reboot. I loved it. But.....no volume 3. Againm. I've had to accept it's never going to happen. I'm more disappointed in this. Mostly because it was a shorter run. Put out 2 more trades and you could finish it. Arg! So now you put out 5YL as an omni. Sigh. I don't really like this format. The binding glue looks like trash. And most importantly. Will there be volume 2? You fooled me twice DC. Sorry. If this was just a trade paperback, I would probably fall for it again. But for a format I'm not even nuts about? I'm out.

Thanks for this, Omar! My copy is still in transit (or waiting to be boxed!) by IST. I agree that the book is dense, but you are getting more excellent story for your comics buying buck. I really like the nine panel grid and the art by Keith Giffen. You call the nine panel grid "traditional" but I have a hard time thinking of anyone else that used it other than Dave Gibbons on The Watchmen. (Bernie Krigstein and Jim Steranko used nine (or more) panels occasionally.) (I know I'm nitpicking!) This omnibus (and the recent Spectre and Green Arrow omniboo) restores some of my faith in DC Comics, as these require more effort than the Dini Batman or Morrison Batman omniboo. ( Of course, these type of books are routinely being issued by Marvel!) Hopefully, the good sales will encourage DC to continue these efforts.

@@NearMintCondition I don’t know what IC is, but I did read the first couple of issues of Waid’s run in was it 2004/05, and the the first couple of “Supergirl and the Legion” issues and they left me cold. In fact, I’ve tried at least a few issues of most every iteration, but I can never really get into them. I had such love for the stories and characters and creators, and yes I realize much of that is tied to just first becoming enthralled with the series when I was a little boy, but the 5 years later stories severed the connection I had to the series. And the reboots have just made it worse.

I have been waiting for this review. This is my favorite Legion run, but I’m so on the fence about this format. I was more excited about the deluxe HC that was solicited initially, but it was cancelled and about a year later I find out about this honker. I have a few omnibus collections, but some are too cumbersome and heavy, and this one looks no different. Also not crazy about the price tag. And I think the cover to issue 12 would have been better for this volume and then gone with issue 25 for volume two. Actually issue 41 would be a great cover for volume two.

I'm pleased this epic story has been released in the Omnibus format. Most of what you stated is quite true, in that it is a jarring take on the former "clean-cut" team from the future. I read and have collected all of the issues in the book, but this is a great format to have them all without having to open up the Mylar bagged & boarded individual issues whenever I might wish to read them. I've been a fan of the LSH since the '60s and yes, I'm one of those Silver Age fans who love this stuff. I indeed would like to buy a future Volume 2 compiling the runs of both the Legion and the Legionnaires. I did enjoy your video and I reminisced as you went along. I didn't enjoy the Legion Lost series, though I started buying it at the time of release until I couldn't stomach the art anymore as it went on. You may think this series was dark but it's nothing unlike the darkness of Legion Lost. My opinion I get it, as there are many fans fo the series. The LSH has been rebooted so many times that there are versions that many might hold dear; this series up until after Zero Hour ended was it for me.

Great review. I was getting ready to say he doesnt know the history he is just winging it. But you did the work and gave a great review. I collect legion since the 1970;s. Mike Grelll ,Dave Cockrum, Jim Starlin Giffen. It hurst me that after all the lore and history Superboy was erased. However when this series started they address that issue with Moen-el which is epic so they did it justice. Giffen is great but the writing of the Bierbaums are fantasic layered with depth. The reimagined charters are great and subtle. They were way ahed of their time Profem ! Rise and fall of Sun Boy SWG batch battle for planet earth. This is the best legion version ever. Like i said iam a collector from the 1970's and heave read most if not all books from 50's 60's 70's and 80's. Legion was one of the first to give prestige printer Baxter version. I highly recommend this. The writing like you said makes you work for it but it is so rich the more you read the more you appreciate it. Like a i said great review ad Long Live the Legion.

If you can get hold of The Great Darkness Saga in a collected edition, you should be able to understand it just fine without reading the stories that preceded it. Back in the day, I started reading Legion of Super-Heroes with #287, which began Keith Giffen's tenure as penciler on the book. The Great Darkness Saga begins in earnest with #290, although a few issues preceding that have a bit of build-up. And I didn't know much about who Darkseid was before reading the Saga either, but I still enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, I got rid of those a while back, but everything from this storyline on up, I kept. It’s great this has been collected. While it is true that people all be confused by some stuff, it really kicks into high gear once issue five happens. After Mon-El takes care of stuff in #4, it gets better. That was a boring issue, but it takes care of the Superboy thing. BTW, Superboy was still in Legion continuity after Crisis.

This run was, if nothing else, daring. But take them out of costume and have them drawn by an artist whose style made it difficult to differentiate which Legion member was which and that made it hard to follow. Really hard.

Great overview, Omar (as usual). I hope you can verify if DC will soon reprint The Great Darkness Saga? I know they're coming up with "Before the Darkness" HC, so I assume DC will eventually do The Great Darkness Saga reprint. Am I right?

I've never really been interested in the Legion, mainly because of the continuity and all the characters. I did buy Bendis' first issue since it came with a free ring. You got me really interested in this series though, both with the premise and the art. It seems to be a sort of retro style, but with slightly more modern detail/refinement. The colors popped out at me too, since they look quite nice. Not sure I'll buy it with the huge price tag (I also have like four omnibuses to work through, right now).

Hey Omar! Love videos and all the other ones you do. I always watch your reviews before I buy or check out a book at the library or hoopla. But any way I have a random question for you. My bday is coming up and I’m stuck on which omnibus I should get. It’s between Batman 66 Punisher max by Garth ennis vol 1 Star Wars by Jason Aaron vol 1 Venomnibus vol 1/2 Do you have any suggestions on which one I should get out of those or now any better ones? Your options would be appreciated. Thanks man. Love your vids and keep it up!

I was just about to be buy this, because I'd read some other Legion stories later on, but this 9 panel thing just killed it. I'm sure the story's somewhere from good to great, but I read comics for visuals more so than the story. I consider a good to great story a bonus to the art. I'd need a steeper discount to buy this book and I don't like buying used, so count me out for now. Thanks for the review.

Keith Giffen changed his art style to copy a French artist. Caught some shit over stealing the style. His art sucks now. During the Great Darkness Saga he was top tier and on point. No idea why he so drastically changed to a lesser style.

I really dislike Giffen’s style of drawing. I also disliked comics in general during this time period because this style was prevalent and the colors seemed muted and simplistic. 80’s-90’s comics feel dated to me as well because the clothing and hair styles mirrored the times and it feels dated in a way that comics from the 60’s-70’s oddly don’t.

I gotta say...I normally buy into Omar’s reviews....but man, I hate this Omni. The art-work and art direction is just terrible. The 9 panel grid is bad enough, but to often the artist has the focus of the panel off-screen. It’s hard to follow the flow. I don’t think I have the inner strength to finish this one.
