910038 Ominous Isle is a challenging and at times frustrating build that ultimately creates one of the most visually stunning and complex LEGO Pirate sets ever produced.
As part of the BrickLink Designer Program Series 2, 910038 Ominous Isle was designed by a fan rather than a LEGO designer, and it shows. This set is radically different to most sets, is a little too fragile for display and is quite difficult to build, but the finished result features a level of detail that has never before been possible in an official LEGO set.
It’s important to be aware that 910038 Ominous Isle is not a standard LEGO set. As a BrickLink Designer Program set, this is not the work of ordinary LEGO designers, but rather, a fan creation that BrickLink and the LEGO Group are selling in small numbers (less than 30,000 copies) during a brief crowdfunding window.

You never actually reviewed the set, only told us it would be difficult to build. I would have liked you to show us all the parts to the set and what is actually looks like around the outside and inside.

It's neither here nor there, because it's a copy that's under review, i.e. not a definitive version. The basic outline of the review is at 06:24. This set falls under the Lego Pirate theme, at least in spirit, as it's not an actual Lego themed set, as many would know, but doesn't offer that much happiness to build (for an average lego builder) and would probably fall apart quickly once in the hands of kids (07:42). That last point won't help us very much, as we know the overarching goal of the lego experience is that sets work well in terms of playing. In this theme it's two good candidates: Creator 3-in-1 Pirate Ship (31109) and the Eldorado Fortress (10320). Additionally, the minifigs are generic. So there you have it. In my own words: Very good looking set, perfect to display, but you have to be a master builder to make the d*rn thing, the minifig lover would let it pass and your kids would quickly dismantle it. An excellent review IMO!

@@Marc76-qt7vp even more nonsense talking about nothing relevant, no wonder you enjoyed the review. This set falls under the BDP theme in reality, yes we can all see the set has pirates. We need information on what we're paying $240 for, and the very least he can do is turn off the purple light and show the thing he's talking about in its entirety for one brief moment instead of wasting 17 minutes of time doing nothing but listening to himself talk with his head taking up more of the screen than the set.

I’m eagerly awaiting to see what the instructions look like for these sets. I suppose we will know in July when the first series gets into consumers hands. I like the digital 3D instructions so I hope it’ll be great

Series 3 designer here - it seems that Bricklink may be putting more emphasis on stability for future series to make it a little bit closer to Lego standards while maintaining the original model's detail. I'm saying that based on the changes they had recommended to my model as well as what Solid Brix Studios said in his Ocean House review.

I feel like people still misunderstand what Lego Ideas is. You're pitching an idea for a set to Lego. They then take that idea and turn it into a set, often built from the ground up. BDP is like actually pitching a set to Lego, they might tweak some stability issues here and there but thats it I feel

@@philipreid2542 They are priced a lot less reasonable than the Lego Ideas sets, this probably has to do with the amount of parts that are used more or less in excess of what a Lego designed set would use. Still, all lego sets are overpriced, so these being even more expensive is not a huge surprise.

Thank you for reviewing the set. I would have loved to see a short overview of the entire set, but there are plenty of pictures on the pages from bricklink itself. I was considering buying the Brick Station set and maybe the Mushroom House for my girlfriend, but when I checked today, they were already sold out. This set looks pretty amazing for a pirate set and if it were a medieval theme I probably would have picked it up, but I cannot afford to start collecting yet another theme outside of the ones I already have. These sets are on average quite a bit higher quality than official Lego sets (apart from the sturdyness of the builds), they are clearly good display sets, or at least meant to be that. There is only one major issue with the whole Bricklink designer program and that is the limited supply of the products. The amount they are putting out is WAY too small. Basically they should just print to demand, start by sending out a notice to people and then give people a week or 2 to decide and then stop the buying process after that. I absolutely despise this 'artificial scarcity' nonsense that we get from this, where people are just snagging up copies to make money on them and barely giving actual fans of the project, or collectors a chance to pick up a single copy. This ruins the whole BDP as a concept, as like many, I also missed the Mountain Fortress set with the last series, by almost a day. (it was sold out in about 15 minutes) This is just amateuristic and ridiculous, you can't just require normal people to take a day off from work to be able to purchase a Lego set. They also completely miss out on a very real opportunity to make way more money from these, it just doesn't add up.

To be fair, and especially next to the other reviews of the BDP Series 2 sets, this comes across as hastily put together. It doesn't show the set in full, its filmed in an awkward angle, doesn't provide many close-ups, the main points being: kids shouldn't play with it (this isn't aimed towards kids), it's hard to put together (yet doesn't particularly elaborate why) and I can't see the final (all be it not a production version) model. Not a review as much as it is an impression.

Excellent review. Thank you for not covering every detail. Those amount to spoilers - it's like covering every plot point of a movie in a movie review. Unfortunately, that seems to be standard lego 'review' on youtube, and it sure seems you've ruffled some feathers by deviating from the formula. Here you've given enough info to make an informed decision, without risking spoiling some of the surprise when building. I enjoy your thoughtful approach to lego reviewing.

Pirates are not my main focus on lego (I do get them because they are fancy and such - still considering this .. I really don't like the prices of these special edition sets), but I love this set. If I were to have a favorite non boat pirate set, this would clearly be it. Looks as good as the Barracuda bay (that edging this out only by being a nice boat as well as a base). This is to me almost as good as Eldorado Fortress with this great modularity and versatility

yep thats the decision i came to as well. seems like if lego wanted these to sell better, they would spread the phase announcements out so we cant plan our purchases 2 years in advance. but im thankful for that

I'm skipping series 3, so you guys can have more! :) This one had 2 sets I loved and in series 4, there are 2 more sets that I really like. It would help out enormously if you can just 'reserve' at least a single copy before they went into pre-order so they can know beforehand how many they need to make and nobody is getting left out.

Instructions now will not be too different from the official ones Yes, they will be improved, but there have been issues with bricklink instructions in the past and they largely stem from the original versions problems.

I'm totally going to be picking up two of these, they look absolutely sick and we get pirate themed stuff so infrequently I think it's absolutely essential to grab this set however, I have one gripe and this echoes what the review mentioned: if this is supposed to be a display set which I believe it is, how come it's not tiled off more? It would have been such an easy final step to do and I think the payoff in reward would have been much better, or they should have added some hinge plates to allow the bill to open more. I think either of they're options would have worked.

Don’t forget matters of taste. I generally prefer Lego things to have visible studs (and antistuds), because that’s part of the Lego aesthetic. There are some things where smoothing everything off makes them look better, and others where it’s an impressive flex to figure out how to hide the Lego-ness. But particularly for something that is supposed to be more natural and rough-hewn, like a 17-century pirate cave, I think the visible studs make it look more like the real thing.

Come on, rattlesnakes aren't like that.. they bite people out of fear because they feel threatened..🐍 🤔 .. although, now that I think of it, the conversation between the two could just be in the man's head. The snake wouldn't attack, even if scared, if it was very cold. Then, when he takes it out of his bag, down in the warmer base of the mountain, the snake is now warmer, sees something grabbing it from above and just bites out of fear. All dialogue is just in his head. Duh.. Makes total sense. Damn..🤦
