Leica Elpro 52 REVIEW AND DOG TEST

While searching for a macro lens or at least a lens that could focus extremely close for my Leica M10 I came across the Leica Elpro 52 Close-Up Lens. I wouldn't really call it a lens, it's more of a hunk of glass magnifier thingy that can screw onto your Leica M and TL lenses allowing for macro type shots. Perhaps their description is better, but oh well.
I bought it to photograph close-up shots of animals for my personal project Kindred Guardians but in the meantime, I decided to test it out on my dog Pan Pan.

Hey Justin, it's great seeing you doing great after a while. You are truly one of the first person that inspired me to also choose photography as a career choice. I'm one of your students from Trung Vuong Primary school when you first came to Hanoi. Hearing your story about going to places and taken memorable pictures really invoked something in me as a teenager. I'm pursuing my photography degree in Berlin now, just bought my very first Leica and found my old English teacher on youtube! Great content as always man, still love your humour and humbleness. @@AskMOTT Q2 is my choice. I am mainly focused on Portraiture and Street at the moment, still trying to find my groove. And yes i know 28mm is not ideal for portrait lens but its what I'm comfortable with switching from GR3. You can visit me on instagram Justin, @kimhieu.hoang. Yes, stay in touch! The Macro-Elmar-M 90 + Macro Adapter-M rocks for macro work. The lens works well as a mid-telephoto also.

Hi Justin thank you for this excellent video. Following your video I tried this out at Leica store Dubai and it does a great job. They also had a macro adaptor but this was twice the price. When I compared image quality I could not see any difference so elpro for half the price was the way to go. Really enjoy your content. Thank you and regards from the desert. Steve. Dubai.

Thanks for watching Steve, I hope to get back to Dubai one of these days. I photographed two InterContinental Hotels there years ago and besides having to work there on a busted knee shooting from a wheelchair, I had a great time. I love the elpro for the price and I can't wait to use it for my personal project. Thanks again for watching brother.

Supplementary lenses used to be the first rung on the ladder of close up photography when I was at college. I remember you could get pretty nice results with them. I've never seen one with the amount of glass that big Leica one has though.

That’s what I like about it Tom, it doesn’t feel like a cheap add on , it still has that robust Leica build quality.

Ebay Elpro with hard leather case $100. That was like 5 years ago. It might be more now. That was for 1 55mm close up "lens" for R lenses.

This is so cool. Is it meant for live view focusing or do you think it would work on my M9?

Great question Lucas, I feel like you need live view to nail the focus , it would be extremely difficult to do so without it.

Here's a fun question: did you choose the Elpro over the Macro Adapter M? I think both have their place but the Elpro is more flexible and convenient.

Loos like weird sound to you, let me ask one question for Elpro 52. Will it be appropriate for digitizing film? As you know, rangefinder camera lens provide a long distance from the target. I'm considering whether to choose Elpro for my M body or get the cheap DSLR. Please share me with your great experience.

Thanks for your question, I think it would be hard to get accurate focus using the Elpro on a film camera. I struggle with it without a screen, I only use it on my M10 not my M10D.
