It is not easy to hold the fate of an icon in your hand -- either as the manufacturer of it, or as the photographer holding it literally in your hand.
I am NOT unbiased when it comes to Leica cameras, and the M10-P will be - for many - the ultimate Leica. Or not. Here’s my best attempt at not letting my biases get in the way of my review of the newest version of the most legendary camera of all time.

Piercingly thoughtful and articulate review.So many notable photographs have been accomplished with only shutter speed, f stop and film speed available. Technology is wonderful but at what point does it really enable better pictures? Please continue your insightful and carefully modulated analyses.

Long ago I remember a soft drink commercial where this individual is crawling on a godforsaken hot desert and when he finally gets rescued, he shuns away a drink of water for a bag of potato chips as an excuse to enjoy the soft drink. That's how you make me feel when I listen to your review on this Leica. I've never shot with a Leica and probably never will, but having said that, the way you detail the history behind the camera makes me want to make an excuse to get one. My friend; you're a throwback to a different era which quite frankly we need more of today! Like I coined. you before: You are a KZfaq scholar. Amazing work again buddy!

Hi! OMG! I thought I met my brother from another mother! You said all the things I feel and talk about to my Leica user friends ever since they produced digital Ms! I still shoot film with IIIF, Ms, and R, lust after the digital Ms but can't justify the buy. I'm sharing this video to my buddies. oh I was 5 years old when my Army uncle came from Europe to last see us (he setup a farm over there), with a IIIF, my dad had a box Browny and that Leica fit my tiny hands so good! On my 25th birthday my dealer had a complete kit I grabbed it so fast his head spun! Thank you from a new subscriber!

A good 'essay' on Leica, with a hint of review of the M10-P along the way. It is remarkable that this, the simplest of cameras, even in digital form, should have been chosen by some of the best photographers over the decades, to create some of the most iconic photographs of our time. No other camera comes close, for so long. That says something... It says less is more, although yes it is a shame that less cost so much more to buy 'less', but maybe the aspiration to a Leica M is a worthwhile wait for the majority of photographers..?

Comparing the sound of the shutter of the M10 vs M10-P and choosing which one I love more is like choosing one of your beloved children as your favourite. I could listen to both for minutes for their own reasons. I’ll admit though that the M10-P is more quiet indeed, and in many scenarios I can see why it would be the winner over the M10. Other than that I cannot decide if it is the red dot logo or the screw that is more harsh. I’d want a black dot logo or no hole. And no LCD, a’la M-D. Thank you for such a thoughtful review and beautiful sample images!

'Leica M10 captures stunning images IF the person behind the camera has what it takes" JUST LOVE THIS STATEMENT. This is so true, some have reviewed M lenses against canon DSLR lenses and said that the Ms were a little less sharp well that could have well been attributed to not hitting focus using the RF. I personally am in love with Leica, am just an average guy and love the mechanical feel of the M system and how it engages one into shooting stills with all their being, its pure meditation, gratification, sense of accomplishment etc. Same goes with almost anything - using a handsaw instead of a power saw, sand paper instead of the sander, get a feel for your work, its truly rewarding that way, driving an old classic fully mechanical car, stick shift, aah what a feeling, todays generation is missing all that, and sadly its not their fault that they don't know all this or want to experience it.

Thank you again for this excellent video. I recently purchased a M10 without P. As now they are readily available and reliable due to the recent firmware updates. I sold my M-P (typ 240) to fund the M10 and kept my heavily brassed M9 and my film M6TTL and my fathers Leica IIIc.The quiet mechanical shutter will be an asset. I use my Fujifilm X100F (leaf shutter) in environments where the shutter sound can be disturbing. Most silent shutters (without shutter mechanism) are still not OK the nearest we get is the Sony A9. The Leica M has always been something special before they were annihilated by a Japanese camera company in the late 50s with flappy mirror camera's although they had visioflex. It is a 35mm mirrorless camera available since 1925! Will perhaps consider the M10-P next year when it will be available and the eventual glitches ironed out.

We, the owners of M and the wonderful lenses are care takers before the others. I used to have the M 240 with amazing Summilux 50 and a 28mm. I now shoot only with another amazing Camera "the Q". Thank you for this deep and thoughtful review. Your emotion is very clear too. Tried an M10R today on trial. For me its all about the glass and not the body. The Summilux 50mm f1.4 I tried was out of this world. Such character. Truly special as even an idiot like me can see for the first time. And its nice to have to focus again.

Very well put on all accounts. I have been shooting Leica since 2001 and as you said, their cameras continue to whisper to me and spur me on to do good work and make every moment matter. I have continued to mainly shoot film but a couple of years ago I bought a demo M-D and thoroughly enjoyed it, it fitting into my analog workflow quite seamlessly. I just traded up to the M10-P and couldn't be happier. It's nice to have a screen when you want to review (though I still keep preview off). What I didn't notice until I had one in my hands was how matte the black finish is. It's quite striking. I thought I would miss the black paint of the M-D but the new finish is a different kind of sexy. Happy shooting!

Appreciate your style, content, and obvious skill. Leica has a certain something many do not understand. After shooting over 6,000 images in recently Europe with a simple Leica Q, I just love the output. As compared to Canon 5D3 with L lenses, or Fujifilm X-T2 with their best lenses, the Q for me means simple execution with incredible output quality. DNG or JPEG colour and lens contrast/colour rendition mean very little post processing for my taste. Other makers colours are either nuclear or flat depending on the make/situation, and the Leica quality also reflects in black and white conversions. For me you pay a little more and get much more ! Oh, and I believe the Leica history means making a tool with clarity of purpose - just get the shot you see and desire rather than focusing on all the options of other hi tech cameras, many of these options, I suspect, most owners do not use.

Great video as usual. The Leica replaced the Speed Graphic for press work? No, not really. It was the camera of choice for the travelling war correspondents like magnum pros but not the local press corp. It wasnt the right tool for the job and didnt have the "perceived" image quality (a sobering thought in these days of sensor size wars). The camera of choice into the 60s for press hacks was the Rolleiflex and its many clones. Astonishing now that the number one professional camera through the 50s and 60s is now largely forgotten (let that be a warning to you Nikon). The 6x6 negative was demanded by editors and the camera, built like a tank, could be held upside down above your head in a press pack to get photos of the celebrity or politician. If you look at newsreels of teh time you see a flurry of Rolleis waving in the air high above the press pack. This pretty much was standard till the end of teh 60s when the SLR started to take over. My father only used his Leica IIIg for bulk work like schools; one roll would do a classroom. He used his Rolleiflex for press work, portraits and wedding receptions. The wedding itself was the sole domain of his Kalart 5x4; in his book nothing less than cut film would do for the money shots. I have a much softer spot in my heart for his Rolleiflex than his Leica IIIg which he left me; I learnt photography on his Rolleiflex in the early 60s; a big step up from the Kodak Brownie i had used since 1956. I never really warmed to the rangefinder and bought first a Rollei SL35 in the 70s and then a Rollei 35s in the 80s; only changing to Nikon in 1990. I was always a Rollei girl; there really wasnt anything like the feel and sound of a Rollei compur leaf shutter; in my mind absolute luxury. As they say, first cut is the deepest ;-)

In the darkroom. The 4x5 could be quickly souped in an aggressive developer like dektol, then contact printed in a size that would precisely span two columns. The time saved by this rough and ready approach could be invaluable with a deadline looming.

That is a sweet combo. I am using the Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2.0. I am awaiting Zeiss announcing the Batis 40mm f/2.0. I have found that I enjoy manual focusing using a high quality EVF over a RF viewfinder. Being able to go to 7x magnification for critical focusing means I don't throw away that 42MP resolution. I also like that they can compensate for very low light conditions. Having 5 stops of IBIS brings out the best in these older lenses. I may get less steady as I get older but my lenses don't have to do the same.

Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions I am sure that I would love the 35 Lux but when I bought my M years ago I could not justify the huge price difference over the Summicron. I have to say that I‘m really happy with my decision. The Summicron is so small, lightweight and the optics are just amazing. By the way I really enjoy your videos on this Channel! Something I found interesting, Hugh, was that like Leica, Rolex also has to walk a fine line between tradition and innovation with its classic models e.g. the Submariner, Explorer, etc. Some change is necessary to keep up with advancements in materials, functionality but too much change will alienate their traditional customer base. It can be a tough balancing act. I wonder how Leicaphiles will deal with the removal of the Red Dot? In some respects, that would be like taking the Crown off a Rolex. Cheers, Stephen

My everyday camera is a Hasselblad 500 CM. I feel the same way about it as you do about the Leica M, it is a talisman that helps transport my artistic soul onto a light sensitive surface. To each his own. That being said, I have spent real money on photography, and would not hesitate to get a Leica M, if I thought it would speak to me like it speaks to you. Not being sure, I will wait until the lottery makes buying one a simple click to buy event, instead of a marriage ending thunderstorm.

Can't decide between the q2 or M10. First world problems, I know....but it's a damn difficult decision.
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 5 жыл бұрын
AcidicDelusion It is good to recognize the class of problem. 🙏🏻With this written, for me, it comes down to focusing and cost. I’ve reached the point where I need the option of auto AF. Sigh. Cost becomes a secondary consideration at that point. But with those 47+ mp, the Q2 DOES truly give me a 28 and 35 fields of view with higher resolution than the M10, 50 with less (15 mp or so, still more than my M8, so still workable). Since I already have a CL, interchangeable lenses are covered as well. If Leica released an updated Typ 020, however, the decision for me would become much harder.

@@3BMEP Thank you for your reply. You're a legend🙏. This will be my first Leica, so I'm taking my time but like you said, I've gotten so used to AF that the M10 might be a shock to the system and oh my does the q2 just about tick every box going.

I struggle with the thought of buying this. Using a 50mm 1.4 wide open, to capture any decisive moment (at shallow depth of field) is a joke. Even after 20 years of practice (according to some togs), it's near enough impossible to use it for those momentary shots wide open and guarantee an in focus shot. Why would I want to zone focus after buying a 1.4 or even a 0.95 ? I was very close to dropping 11k £ on an m10 and 50mm....but having read countless statements from very talented wedding togs, saying that it's virtually impossible to focus quickly at wide apertures... well, I can't justify the purchase. Money aside ... as a photographer, I like the idea of super shallow depth of field used for capturing that "decisive" moment. You can't do that with a rangefinder... A bit tongue in cheek.... but, if you want to get the Leica look with a DSLR, just wait for the focus beep, then nudge the focus ring slightly...job done ! At the end of the day, the camera bodies are just tech.. gonna be worth little in 10 years time... and the lenses ? Gorgeous...of course... maybe I'll try a 0.95 on my canon.... but I can't help thinking that I'll miss the fast autofocus of the canon 50mm 1.2 for capturing life as I see it, when I see it. Leica may well go bankrupt soon..... I hope not.... that would be a loss to the art of photography.

@@3BMEP Hugh, I am really contemplating having the M10-P. I can, Of course, Have M240 or M9 or M8 (Well... Not after what you've said) at a much lower price. I have an M6TTL , And after years of shooting Nikon DSLRs for the more "Semi/Pro" work, I would like to have something with a heritage. For the ages. Without being "On the edge" of upgrading every single (or two) models? A camera that will be "Good enough" and not require that endless race of upgrades and selling and reselling. That's the reason I'm thinking of a new M10-P: Looks like it has everything a Leica shooter would need, As opposed to the issues with previous models. And waiting 4-5 years until the M10-P will be sold on 2nd hand market... Well: I may not live until then :-) but that's my question to you: Is it really a talisman for ages? Or is it, Again, A tool that will need ongoing upgrades and re-paying for a new model, As opposed to the Film M? Is it still something that is "Something you can inherit to your kids", Is it really what you've said about it, In the sense, it makes for the film M most of your video? In the "I hold history in my hands" sense? OR is it just another "Fancy iPhone that's obsolete after the next one comes out"? Am I realistically expecting it from the M10-P?
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 5 жыл бұрын
Sharon Leibel I think the M10P is a fully sorted product. It could well be the last camera you’d want for quite a while. It IS a tool - AND a talisman. If you wanted to spend less and could still find the talismanic qualities in it (I can), you might be surprised if you spent time with the CL. Different shooting experience, but it is well sorted and roughly the same size with a clear design heritage of the first Leica’s.

But I do happen to have one in house at the moment and just ran downstairs to the bat studio to test them both. There was more ambient noise than my earlier tests, but the Q's max dB reading was 4dB lower than the M10-P's - though the M10-P's was in turn 7dB lower than our Panasonic GH5, which I think is pretty quiet. What a slippery slope the lure and the lore of the Leica. I found your video amazing. For months, the spark my M3 kindled years ago, has grown into roaring rage. But your presentation did nothing to diminish my affliction. Seems to have proven fatal, or at least impactful. In the next day or so, I have a pending sale of my 1DX2 - which provides the remaining funding for - ah, guess what? Then again, not all pending sales happen, so - in conclusion - it's all your fault (just kidding). Thanks for a sensitive and borderline sensible presentation.

Your comments re stewardship presuppose durability/longevity of the electronics. That then compels the question as to whether anyone would replace the electronic hardware in the event of catastrophic failure. With regard to the future development of the company, it is noteworthy that Leica is investing in high tech imaging, which has a great deal of potential.
