Three Blind Men and An Elephant

7 жыл бұрын

Suddenly, high quality 100-400mm modest aperture zooms are the rage - from Sony's newly announced, $2,500 full frame E-Mount G-Master f/4.5-5.6 to Fujinon's $1,900 X-mount f/4.5-5.6 and Leica's $1,800 MFT mount f/4-6.3. We compare image quality and autofocus (which of course is a function of the camera bodies as well) using the Panasonic GH5 and Fujifilm XT-20...at a horse race.

Brilliant video, cool commentary and what a coincidence Fujinon's 100-400 with 1.4x teleconverter is on sale this week. I too shoot with the xt20 and have one question, what exactly were your settings for catching the action? Thx in advance!

Much less than you'd think on the Fuji, but that's because it was my first time out with it: on full auto at 400mm the XT-20 decided ISO 400, 1/420, f/8, (-1 EV, my call). I set 1/6400 shutter preferred on the GH5, giving me (for example) f/4.0 at 107mm, ISO 3200. Much higher shutter speed much better, and for this kind of work ISO 3200 works! The Sony a6300 was set to aperture preferred (Claudia likes to shoot at 1.8!), resulting in ISO 200 at 1/4000 (best of all). A little more time with the Fuji and I would have gone in the same direction.

You didn't mention the different crop factors. So the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm is a 200-800mm equivalent, whereas the Fujinon 100-400mm is a 150-600mm equivalent.

Well that depends on the weakest link (snappiness of the lens). I have an EM1.2 with OSPDAF and it might just be that that cam gets you better results. As of today a G9 would be quite interesting here, seems it has better AF still. Thx for a good review with your particular take on making such videos.

Wow great video. Whats really interesting is that here in the UK The GH5 body is £1699 and the Fuji is only £799. The X-T2 is much closer in price at 1399 (with grip). I guess people will always prefer one to another but as a mere mortal Fuji owner I now no longer feel as though I am missing out by not having a Panasonic for video!!! Thank you I can now sleep at night!!!!

Thanks to TBM&AEP we all have an opportunity to see and feel an obvious thing: we have none loosers in this $2K killer-lens contest... And that is great! These both warriors are tough and strong and they both know what to do with their job... All the rest - is a matter of personal preference... Thums up!

Hello sir, excellent video. I am considering purchasing myself a g9 and the 100-400mm pana shown in this video. I heard however that the lens only has autofocus up to 30p in 4K on the GH5, so I was wondering if this is the case. Is this true or can I expect autofocus no matter the frame rate? I hope for autofocus at 4K 50/60. Lots of fake news around these days and finding actual info not easy! Thanks
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 6 жыл бұрын
Grumpy Thing I hadn’t heard that, but the larger issue is: how is the GH5’s AF more generally in 4K? The answer is: not nearly as good as Sony’s and Canon’s systems, though sometimes better than some reviewers’ initial experience. The G9’s is better than the GH5’s (stay tuned, video on G9 AF coming soon). Bottom line: I wouldn’t count on GH5 4K video AF performance in critical situations. With this said, the GH5 is a fantastic camera, I bought one with my own hard cash, and it has become my daily shooter as well as my A cam for our documentary series.
@spacething1246
@spacething1246 6 жыл бұрын
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions yeah I must admit the AF of other cameras interests me a lot. For my use however I don’t want to carry super heavy gear and the reach of the Panasonic lens is great as well as the size. I am favouring the idea of the G9 as my video camera due to the greater stabilisation and the claimed better autofocus. GH5 and GH5S don’t do as well with these 2 aspects, while other cameras either don’t do high frame rate 4K or have overheating issues (like some sonys). As I’ll be shooting in 4K 50/60 even the internal 10bit of the GH5 isn’t a pro for me since that’s for lower frame rates. I’m glad to hear that you think investing in the m43 system is a good choice. Thank you for your response, I’ll await your new g9 AF video.

I'm interested to know about using lenses that aren't native to the GH5. If I use the Olympus 300mm prime. Do I get duel (stable)isation without there being micro jitters etc. I know that with native lenses you don't get the jitter but what about non native lenses?
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 6 жыл бұрын
Mitchell Roberts I don't know - haven't had the 300 in hand, and the only non-Panny lenses I have (Oly 75/1.8 and Sigma 30/1.4) don't have IS. Anyone out there among our viewers who has first hand experience?
@danieldougan8613
@danieldougan8613 6 жыл бұрын
The Olympus lens stabilization is not compatible with the Panasonic in-body stabilization. So you have to use one or the other, which is not a terrible compromise. The real compromise that you would make with this lens on the GH5 is the lack of DFD C-AF support for Olympus lenses. The Olympus 300mm f4 is really at its best on the OM-D E-M1 or OM-D E-M1 Mark II because those bodies have phase-detect autofocus.

With the GH5, should have used AF-C with tracking (it works in stills and video)! As subjects appear on screen, tap to track ... It looks like you were just using AF-S single point :/

Great experience! Next year you'll be much better prepared. Gear preference settling, knowing / anticipating where the action is, focus on the spot. "Super slow-mo" on GH5 looks absolutely stunning, definitely an asset with fast action (which gave the best footage) @ 1:17. Focus was on the right spot, MF the right choice anyways. Could've been on the hedge, or slightly forward, or pulling focus towards after first hops (but challenging with such fast animals). The color grading went way too saturated for that clip. Great gear all-around, all serve their purpose with style, but i do prefer GH5 and Leica 100-400mm when it comes to quality / colors. Best photo with A6300 @ 3:50. That's about it, thanks for sharing!

Hah! I say: get out and shoot, then get back inside and edit and post! Both lenses (and both cameras) are excellent, though I prefer the GH5 to the XT-20 (then again, for personal use I prefer the XT-2 to...everything, at least for stills). But maybe the GH6 will be allowed to have phase detect AF...

I may well be in a minority of one, but Please turn down the music: I missed much of what you were saying, so had to rely on my eyes; which told me the panasonic/leica footage was oversaturated: And that's from a bloke that, pretty much 100%, uses fuji's Astia for colour photography.

I loved this video Hugh. The video clip from the GH5 + Pana-Leica 100-400 was so much better color-wise, than the Fuji XT2 + 100-400 i don't know much about the RAW & JPEG Files (Stills) from GH5 if you can throw some light on it. The other day, i was watching a comparison of video footages between GH5 & EM1 MkII by KZfaq Channel : Michael The Maven, and i liked GH5 colors more than Olympus. Thanks.
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 7 жыл бұрын
Chirag Parikh I'd chalk it up to my own carelessness - I didn't try to set the color profiles similarly, but instead set them to learn something (I should have mentioned this in the video): I set the GH5 to vivid and the XT-20 to standard (Provia) rather than Velvia, with which I was already familiar from using the XT-2. The learning: you can make either camera look somewhat like the other with a simple menu setting, though trying to match footage is a different level of inspection I didn't try. I'd expect that to be much harder unless one could settle on a cross-platform color profile.
@chirag4
@chirag4 7 жыл бұрын
Ok Thanks. yes, colors/settings can be tweaked in menus, or post, to make one look like the other. However, despite Fuji being a Stills camera + with larger sensor, I would first pick M43 Panasonic or Olympus any day, and i am not a video guy. This is due to my love of MFT system, great for travel & portability.
