The original song was sung back in the late 1960's by "The Guess Who", a Canadian band. It was a political statement on how aggressive on how the US was in their aggressive foreign policies. Budding in to other people's, and country's affairs. The American Woman in the song is a reference to "Lady Liberty." An American Woman icon. It was also a refence to the peace movement against the US troops in Vietnam.

@@projectchevron13 You also have to remember that Lenny Kravitz had the score for the song that was originally played. He probably improved the tunes. When the Guess Who first played this, it was from scratch in front of an audience. No score, or lyrics.

@@Reimerguns What was the issue with the original song? The Guess Who was the band that wrote and recorded it. They were a Canadian band. Burton Commings and Randy Bachman wrote the music and were founding members. They both eventually left with Randy Bachman forming BTO and Commings going out on his own. I listened to alot of their music and didn't know of any issues they might have had. If you know something about this could you return a comment to me. I'm American not Canadian. Hi Pedro!!! The remake of this by Lenny really blew me away when I first heard it. I was in the record store and they had a really good stereo system!!! The bass was amazing. I did get the cassette of it and liked all the songs on it. Another version of this was made for a movie on Lifetime by another artist whose version was also very good. That version was made for the movie only! I thought Lenny was always and still is very talented!!!👍

Согласна на все сто, в 2014 мне удалось побывать на его живом шоу, это было потрясающе, профессиональное шоу сосредоточенное в первую очередь на музыке, а не на выкрутасах, жаль публика в России специфичная, особенно с учетом, что дело было на гран при России, не все оценили старания, но я была в восторге Ленни один не многих ныне музыкантов с тем самым духом настоящего мелодичного, но двайвового рока.

Fifty years ago this June, the Canadian rock band, The Guess Who, burned up the pop charts with hits like “American Woman,” which they claimed was a love letter to the women of their own country. Lenny Kravitz’s powerful, updated version won for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance 30 years later. I saw him perform it live at a Bob Dylan Concert at Carnegie Hall, where Kravitz performed as the opening act. Ultimately, Lennie Kravitz proved that a cover could sometimes be more memorable and sustaining than the original.

Timeless and classic as a song...like The Who "My Generation". Can't imagine Lenny doing "My Generation" though...still...maybe he could. Would definitely be worth a listen, to be certain.
