Best tutorial for this laptop because you actually did mention the "entry level" model versus the mid range which was VERY helpful for me as I was thinking about buying this laptop. Yeah I had that laptop but then got a call saying the GPU is known for issues causing flickering and that to the screen so I swapped it for the Y700

Happy New Year, Lon! Nice review once again. Any chance of a review of the new XPS 15? I know you tend towards the lower end hardware when it comes to this stuff but I'd love to get your thoughts on the really high end XPS 15 with the 4K InfinityEdge touch display. I've been looking for an upgrade from my ASUS UX303LN with an i5-4210U and 840M, and the XPS 15 looks like it might strike the right balance between power and portability for me, and that 4K touch screen is apparently a sight to behold. High end laptops are always really expensive out here in Australia but compared to the competition the XPS 15 is somewhat better. Where Microsoft charges A$4,200 for the 3K*2K, i7-6600U, 1GB 940M, 16GB/512GB config of the Surface Book, and Apple charges A$3,800 for the quite out of date 15" MacBook Pro, Dell charges A$3,000 for the 4K*2K, i7-6700HQ, 2GB 960M, 16GB/512GB config of the XPS 15. Those kinds of prices probably sound ridiculous, but with the economy in its current state Dell are offering quite a lot of bang for your Aussie Dollarydoo as far as mobile workstation-like hardware is going.

I found 90% of the time with "gaming" laptops people sit them on desks , connect to power socket, connect to mouse and the unit NEVER leaves the bloody desk , so they would of been better off getting one of those AIO screen PC's instead or a bloody ITX solution

Hey man you are cool but... You didn't show the entyre settings of gta like high or medium :) and minecraft was running on the Intel HD graphics ^^ you could've changed it in the nvidia settings to use the gtx 960m :) just a tip!

In Japan, we have a 128 SSD + 500GB Hard Drive option and a 512GB SSD option. I wonder if the battery size is larger with the SSD only version?

the software/hardware seeing that it doesn't need to use the dedicated GPU to run Minecraft.

+Casimir Feldmann that entirely depends on what setting you have it on, if it was set on performance mode then it would probably use the dedicated GPU, but this probably didn't come shipped in performance mode and probably some sort of power savings mode. so unless it is a high end game that requires it, it will probably just default to the integrated GPU.

+madmax2069 Actually, its because, in the nVidia control panel, it has been set to integrated graphics. The only way to fix it is to go to the control panel and change the setting

Not sure if this is the right place to ask the question but I'm looking for a laptop for Engineering. I've looked at the Lenovo P50 but a buddy says thats overkill... That I should look into the Ideapad Y700. Why? In another review someone praised the P50 for its performance but then stated that the P50 with Xeon processor and Quadro M2000 faired about as well as a GTX960 in a gaming side. If thats the case why is the P50 so much more? Would using a gaming computer do just fine? I do like games and will play them from time to time, but my main criteria is that the school programs work well rather than having a gaming laptop. I would be using software like: Inventor, SolidWorks, PTC/CREO, Catia, MathCad, which at this point means nothing to me! I've never used them before. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

on the 29th of Jan I bought a new Lenovo Y-700 , unfortunately the CPU temperature reaches 100c under full load by using Prime95 !!! what is the problem?

It's portable, I will get annoying though considering the anti glare is mediocre at best, it's kinda heavy and not that thin, I wouldn't say unmanageable just an extra kinda, annoyance I guess? If that's a good word to describe it :P

If you just need to do homework at home then yes but they're kinda heavy and not that portable, plus because it's a gaming laptop the battery isn't that good, if you need something to take to school and take notes I'd get a MacBook, chrome book, pretty much any thin ultrabook meant for school, I know Lenovo sells a lot of them with good enough specs to play some games on low to medium settings.

It has the specs to do that easily but I wouldn't recommend editing photos or just anything that has to do with color for that matter, the Y700 has pretty bad color accuracy.

should all be very similar as long as the hardware is kept cool. The battery will simply be drained very quickly.

+Randall Stokes no laptops benefit from being plugged in, not do to heat, but do to power drawn to the graphics card, so its quite a bit different

Mcafee is a virus in it self, and that other one . . Norton. Horrible, horrible programs that should be banned from being pre installed. So much system slow down because of them, always the first things to go when I get a new PC lol. Nice review Lon, thanks :)
