Replacing the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) with a new Solid State Drive SSD (or another HDD) in the Lenovo ThinkPad T420 only requires the removal of one screw to take out HDD caddy, then the four screws that hold the drive on the caddy. Try not to overtighten the screws. An original HDD may have adhesive tape holding it to the caddy, you can get this off quite easily (but it's not shown in the video as my drive had already been previously replaced).

Super helpful video. I almost lost hope for transferring my drive when I saw it had a disk drive.

can you do a video on how to clone the data that's already on your Lenovo including all the programs and settings that you have before you take out a hard drive and put a new one in so that there's a way to download onto the new SSD card is there a possibility you could give that instruction for me I am planning to do this and I would like to move my original 320gb hard drive up to over a terabyte. I really like your video and I don't care if someone says your boring mate because may you are talking to someone that needs to be spoon-fed like me and I'm really going to be able to do this on my own probably after three or four tries because of someone nice like you making it a real slow mo easy-to-understand video thank you so much I'll let you know how it goes later. Being as boring as you dream I love it!

David, yes the cases are excellent as are the keyboards. One of the best laptops at the time.

Can you do a video how to solve problem "A Disk read error occurred Press CLT+alt+ Del to restart" If so it'll be helpful to many.

Great video, but how about a follow up video showing how you restore the OS onto the new SSD drive. It would be good to see exactly how it's done, whether you burn system disks first, then use them to install the OS to the SSD. It would be good to know what size a SSD can be for t420 and which type/size. I understand they come in different sizes but which is correct for the t420 caddy. Although lots know how to do this, plenty of casual users never get to do a HDD replacement and install of the existing OS. I have heard that some folks remove the CD/DVD drive and put the removed HDD into it, makimg a second drive available. Can the OS be copied across to the SSD if you do it that way?

Thank you for your comment, and for the great question and suggestion. In this particular case I was replacing the hard drive from another laptop of mine into this one as I had hardware problems. The way to upgrade to a new disk and transfer the OS over is to put the old hard drive in an external hard drive caddy, connect it up via USB, and then use Clonezilla clonezilla.org/ to bring the OS over. It's free and open source software. (Use KZfaq for help on it). You are quite right about SSDs being different thicknesses. The Samsung SSD in this video is 6.8mm, the original drive was a little thicker (I don't have it at hand to measure it for you). Many are 7mm which are fine. I would suggest avoiding thicker ones.

Hi does any 3.5in caddy work? I'm buying a ThinkPad like this laptop without the caddy or drive and I can take the rubber sliders off a R61 ThinkPad im not using

I'm not sure, sorry, but I'm guessing that if the rubber sliders fit then you'll also be able to slide it in. Be sure to attach something to the caddy so you can remove it too. Good luck!

I have a T420, and the drive I removed has an extra set of three pins.

Hi Mark, thank for your comment. I think that the additional pins (some four pins) in the old drive were for configuring the drive to use (or not use) additional drive features like RPS "reduced power spinup", and SSC "spread spectrum clocking". All the best.
