Lent is that period of time between Ash Wednesday and the 'Lord's Supper' Mass on Holy Thursday, which is excluded. Its purpose is to prepare for Easter. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting, and ashes are imposed.
The penitential discipline for the reconciliation of sinners that took place on the morning of Maundy Thursday contributed to the development of #Lent. It was also linked to the increasing demands of the catechumenate with the preparation for Baptism celebrated on Easter night.
Certainly towards the end of the 4th century, the structure of Lent is the current one of 40 days, a number closely related to biblical symbolism.
