Sour Cream Coleslaw
1/2c sour cream
1.5tsp vinegar
1tsp sugar
1/2tsp salt
Dash pepper
1/4c shredded carrot
1Tbsp thinly sliced radish
1Tbsp finely chopped green pepper
1Tbsp finely chopped green onion
3c shredded cabbage
Strawberry Yogurt Medley
1/2c strawberry yogurt
4oz whipped cream cheese
2Tbsp sugar
Fish Fillets Olé
2c cooked rice
10z frozen Mexican style vegetables
1/4tsp chili powder
1/4tsp cumin
Dash garlic salt
1/4c chopped onion 1Tbsp butter
1 - 15oz can tomato sauce
3/4c water
14oz haddock or other fish fillets
Combine cooked rice, vegetables, chili powder, cumin, and garlic salt, and place in 11 x 7 casserole dish. In saucepan, cook onion in butter until tender. Stir in tomato sauce and water. Top the vegetable and rice mixture with fish fillets. Sprinkle with salt. Spoon tomato sauce mixture over fish fillets. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes.

We have that toaster oven! My parents got it new in 1969 and cooked in it all through grad school. My dad rewired it in the early 1980s, and when we found another one at a yard sale we bought it in case we ever need parts!

The first kitchen I had as a new Bride, in extreme North Florida was the brown stove and sink with bright yellow (gold) Formica counters. The Refrigerator was white, though. I did a lot of good cooking in it!

With Lent approaching, this is a good resource. My mom used to make tuna gravy over biscuits or tuna noodle casserole during Lent and I always loved, loved them. There's the dilemma...if I love them that much it isn't a sacrifice to eat them but rather a treat. The 70's earth tones were a reflection of the focus on our environment begun by the book Silent Spring in the 60's. I was a kid during Expo '74 in Spokane and the theme was 'Celebrating Tomorrow's Fresh New Environment'. (We know how things went, right?) I guess by the 80's we were all ready for a new color palette, haha.

Yup, me too 🇬🇧. I only go to other supermarkets to get things I can't source at Aldi. Lidl has a fab bakery, for instance, and the only brand of cat biscuits my moggy will eat comes from Asda.

This is Tom's wife, using his account. I just started following you. I love how you collect and use all of the old dishes. And, I love how you talk about the pictures/lay outs in the cookbooks. I have a question... If you could bring back one retro recipe and make it popular again, what would you choose? (I can't wait to hear your answer)
@cooking_the_books

Hello and welcome! First off, thank you so much for watching. As for your question, I recently made Chicken a la King from Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook (the 1950 edition) in my 'Day of 1950s Meals' video. That's the dish I would popularize. It was so delicious and SO easy and quick to put together! Plus, it had pimento in it, which is one of my favorite 'retro' ingredients. We don't seem to use it nearly as much in recipes today as it was used in the past. It adds such a nice zing and pop of color to dishes!

choosing the slaw OR the fruit would suit me, as lenten meals are also supposed to be minimal. (In the Catholic tradition, which of course is not everyone's). I used to have several of the BHG cookbooks. I used to have a ton of cookbooks, but I sold them at a yard sale or donated. It would be awesome if 1 ended up in your hands. 😊

I used the Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks when I first got married. I had their “Cooking for Two” cookbook. They had a seafood soufflé recipe that I cooked. It was so impressive and I was so proud of myself! There was also a recipe for Steak Diane. It was another good recipes.I liked their recipes better than Betty Crocker.

Re under-seasoning, I just think in the 50s-70s it was assumed 90% of readers/cooks were moms. Kids generally don't like spice (apparently this is a universal thing - so says Google, - even in, say, Mexico and India). Anyway, you get my point... Love these vids! xo.
