when I was a little girl, my older brother hitch hiked home from across the U.S. Guess who picked him up and gave him a ride right to our home? Leon Russell. He sat right next to me on our picnic table, ate our meager meal and treated us like we were the ones who were super stars! I will never forget that day. He was amazed that, as a little girl, I knew all about him and the words to his songs. I was holding all my older brothers albums for him. I was introduced to all the cool bands. What a great memory!!!! What a legend and great man.

Elton said once "I always knew I wanted to play piano, but I wanted TO BE Leon Russell". He cut quite the rock star figure!. A true original to bone................. BTW When Elton found Leon, he was virtually destitute...didn't even have a piano of his own to play.anymore ...and he was basically just self medicating and waiting to die. Elton immediately took action and made sure to help Leon get back on his feet....physically and spiritually..got him turned around so that he not only couuld play again but put out an album w/Elton and one of his own...and toured! A major recovery and what a good good friend Elton John is.

Leon Russell was a phenomenon. I'm old and have played piano since I was a child, and I grew up in Hollywood. There was nobody like him. People really don't have a clue about the magnitude of his talent. You know, the greatest thing a musician can have on his resume is having been a member of the Wrecking Crew. You need an extreme level of talent to do that kind of work. The songs that Leon wrote and that most people know him for, are the kind of things he personally most liked to do. But his talent was far, far broader than that. He could play anything, any style, from classical, to jazz, to rock, and play it on the spot. This is why someone like Elton saw Leon as an idol, and so do I. I can't even imagine having that kind of talent. Lastly, I'll mention that the Steinway Piano Company has a program called the Steinway Artists. If you are honored by Steinway as a Steinway Artist, the Steinway Company will provide a Model D concert grand piano at every public performance you make, free of charge. Virtually all Steinway Artists are classical pianists. Only two "rock" pianists have ever been chosen as Steinway Artists: Leon Russell and Keith Emerson. Wrecking Crew, Steinway Artist -- that's all you need to know.

I'm an Oklahoma girl (now 57, lol) and my Mother turned me on to Leon around 1969 or 1970 when I was just 7 or 8 years old. In grade school once a week our music teacher allowed us to bring our own music. Everyone else was bringing "The Wheels on the Bus" type of music and I was bringing my Leon Russell albums. I lost my sweet Mother 3 weeks ago and of course we played Leon at her funeral. He was one of a kind and so was she. Thank you, Elton, for such sweet words in honor of "Our Leon".

I'll agree with that. I've heard a lot of hoo haw in some of them. I didn't know this story but Elton John is a great man for what he did to help Leon Russell back up and give him some dignity back. He wrote a lot of good songs but Superstar, more well known as played by The Carpenters was huge when it hit the radio and it stayed huge for a few years. That was a Leon tune.

"I love you in a place where there's no space or time...." It doesn't get any better than this. That lyric has brought me to this wonderful video. A whole life lived; sometimes with total grace, but usually with certain flaws. 'Let's come together and hold each other up. Elton John gave us a glimpse of what can happen when you are paying attention. It's the little acts of reaching out when others don't know what's going on. 'So great to see Leon Russell share his amazing talent one more time. RIP

Unfortunately, few of you younger folks will understand what we had in Leon Russell, and what we will lose when he's gone. He was right in the middle of the biggest part of the birth and explosion of rock and roll. And more than anyone I can think of, he stayed true to the music and to himself. He was utterly unafraid, and unaffected by the opinions of others. Elton John did a great thing here.

Mayer is far more talented than people give him credit as a musician and instrumentalist... he was a prodigy himself. An absolute master guitarist and songwriter when he wants to be, from ballads to powerhouse. The best thing about his work is that he doesn't take himself seriously and plays for the love of his craft. Leon was much the same; Elton, too.

Back in the 1970's Leon taught me a valuable lesson. I had tickets to see him play in Austin, and, "knowing" that rock concerts never start on time, I showed up late. By the time we got there, Leon had already sung three or four songs, and we had missed them. Leon taught me to get my ass in gear and show up on time. Thanks for the lesson, Mr. Russell, and thanks for a lifetime of brilliant music.

R&RHF is a joke, unless you're actually qualified to be inducted for true merit. Everyone knows this grift now, especially after they inducted Dolly Pardon. Reminds me of those that pay money to be on the Walk of Fame, or something similar. But the amazing Leon was a musician's musician and should be inducted in a special reserved class of masters with few other equals. Build them a separate section in the R&RHF, those rare few that shine above us all with their gifts and rare and unique talents. This guy is from a different level and should be presented as such... he was far more than just an entertainer. I'm glad to see that he realized his dreams, too. Good for him! RIP

Leon Russell was great, that's all there is to it. Those of us coming to age in the 60s and 70s can see much of ourselves in Leon and his music. He reflected what we in "the community" were thinking, seeking and doing. Peace, love, brotherhood, nonviolence, kindness, sharing what little we had with our brothers and sisters and tolerance for those with a different bag. There was so much more, too. Together, we carved out a little space where we had freedom society sought to deny us. Leon was right there with us, playing our music and inspiring us. Thank you, Leon Russell. You will not be forgotten.

I have listened to Leon since about 1969 or 70... got to see him several times in my life... I got to see him in Lawton(hometown) , Medicine Park and also in Tulsa! Best musician there will ever be, in my opinion, he is so sorely missed...RIP LEON

I spent many years playing bass in Tulsa, OK, and got a chance to play with guys that recorded and toured with Leon, JJ.Cale, and Eric Clapton. Those were the best years of my life. Leon was one of the main musicians that put Tulsa on the map, as home of some of the worlds greatest musicians. I respect Elton John immensely, for recognizing Leon and inducting Leon into the R&R Hall of Fame. I can't think of any more deserving than Leon for the incredible musical accomplishments spanning over 60 years. Leon is a national treasure and Elton is a saint. God bless them both! Nice to hear from a TULSA musician, especialmente alguno que está viviendo en Sud América y tocó en Tulsa! To think the Leon and JJ Cale played as Sr High students at Tulsa Central HS and together put the Cain’s Ballroom and the Old Lady on Brady back on the map from the Swing days of Bob Wills. RIP JJ, Leon and more recently and sadly too soon, Steve Pryor.

Tulsatom Bob, I’ll be in Tulsa in Sept 2019 to see Jeff Beck at the Brady Theater. I wish I had more time to check out the town and the local music scene, but it’s gonna be a quick turnaround. Sure looking forward to seeing what we can of the town though.
