My first guitar pedal :) Dad bought one when I got my first electric about 20 years ago. For years I thought it was just cheap and relatively good dirt box. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I learned that it was actually very liked and used even at professional level. Thanks dad and local music store guy! Still my default, go to, favourite drive. My friend and a bandmate as kids had DS-1 and I never understood how he got a decent sound out of it (until this spring). SD-1 on the other hand had a drive knob that made it sound good, a volume knob that was good and a tone knob that made it sound good. Super easy to get it to sound nice. And I always liked the character and mid hump Q better than tubescreamer. The enlightment came from learning about the classic way of pushing the volume, then adding drive knob to taste for character. Recently I also heard how someone used SD-1 as a makeshift treble booster for not being able to afford and acquire one.

I've used an SD-1 forever. Sounds great as a clean/slightly dirty boost to tighten up fat amps like Dual Recs and 6505s. I also really like using one as a bass overdrive as it cuts just enough of the low end to make a really cool Lemmy style bass overdrive tone.

@@LeonTodd Into a Kemper, actually. I have a fairly full pedalboard that i prefer to use instead of the Kemper effects. Which are very good, but i'd rather twiddle real dials than _cursor and scroll and select._ And, sometimes the real pedals sound better. Like, most Kemper users crow about how good the Kemper delays and reverbs are. But, i wasn't really moved by the reverbs, so i got the UA Golden Reverberator, and BAM-happy. Similarly, although the Kemper has a ton of delays (and can probably-i'm sure) do what this pedal does, i just bought the $50 Donner White Tape delay, and i'm thrilled with it. So much simpler/easier/more direct and more fun. Back to the SD-1, though-to be honest, i bought it because it's black. I had previously considered one, but already have pedals that probably do similar things, but then they *(you!)* showed this, and it's "limited" and looks better than the standard, so... "I jump in it."

Criss Olivia did use 2 SD-1's but he used it into a some kind of clean'ish amp, most likely a JMP or JCM 2203 or 2204, using the low Input. His settings were: one did have the Tone Knob dimed & one on zero but the drive was also maxed out on both, making it noisy as hell obiously, but he had a gate going. He did also use a CE-2 and a bunch of Eq's to further shape the sound 👍🤘

The Waza looks and sounds so good. Ever run them together?
@JosipAngeloBorovac
@JosipAngeloBorovac 3 жыл бұрын
@@LeonTodd Hi Todd, yes the Waza is really good and in the standard mode, it is identical sound-wise to my stock MIJ model. I did try them once similarly as you show in this video and I think that two of these together can do a lot of damage. What I did was to use it - from the first in the chain - standard SD1 (volume max, the tone in the middle, gain to 0) and then into Waza Craft (custom mode, volume max, tone in the middle, gain to 0). From there it went straight into the input of a Marshall (JCM800) that was set to dirty as a baseline tone. I can tell you, this combination rocks. Plenty of sustain and pinch harmonics galore, without too much noise really. As you state it perfectly, in that case, a noise suppressor at the end of the chain before amp's imput such as NS2 can get rid of the excess hum.

I just got an SD1 to use as another drive pedal in front of my Vox AC15. It sounds awesome. I used to have a TS9DX which I wasn’t really getting along with. The SD1 really seems like a fuller, more aggressive version of that!
@gkol69
@gkol69 3 жыл бұрын
You can even use an SD-1 as an "amp" after a DS-1 Distortion. The SD-1 set up slightly driven to mimic a crunchy amp into an amp set up clean and the DS-1 before it with as much distortion as you like. The DS-1 "sees" the SD-1 as an overdriven amp and sounds better and not as nasty like going directly to a clean amp. Very versatile pedal and underrated by the boutique lovers because of the low price.

Built and tried dozens of overdrive pedals with some success but just recently thought maybe I should give the humble SD-1 a go. In front of my Orange Thunderverb 50 or Diezel VH-2 it just hits the right spot, my hunt is over! £30 second hand, money well spent! 🤘

Yeah Criss Oliva was said to use two SD-1's with the tone control settings as you show in the video. The thing that always puzzled me was that he apparently got all his dirt from those two pedals. I read that he always ran his amps clean through the low input channel. I just find it hard to believe that he ran his amp all clean and all dirt was from the pedals only. When I listen to live and studio recordings of him it does sound more to me like he used one to push a Marshall style amp (JCM800 or JMP) and the second one as a solo boost. I believe he maybe ran into low output of a Marshall, cranked it and then pushed it with his SD-1's instead of using the high input setting and pushing that as everyone else would have done. One thing for sure is I just went out and finally bought a used SD-1 yesterday and I will be experimenting all weekend with how to combine this together with my EQD Plumes and see how close I can get to Criss' tone. Again thanks for the video. Great content as always! Cheers!

I run my sd1 into my dark matter from tc electronic. The dark matter is more of a slightly higher gain overdrive instead of a distortion in my opinion but it's also a little more full range so when you run the sd1 into it it's more like boosting a jcm800. One of my favorite tones.

Great Vid , Once you mentioned Criss Oliva( summer rain solo = brilliant) and Savatage I knew i had to try it again with my current rig. So after some experiments here is some heresy - i play through a 6505 and blue marvel 1x12 both brilliant - after some tweaking on pedal and amp EQ i prefer SD-1 over , mini tube screamer, soul food, tumnus, and oh no.. the holy grail Maxon 808 - why ? I can get most of what the other pedals do with tighter more percussive cut and less noise and great harmonics. SD1 for the win on a 6505 even though tube screamers are “ supposed” to be better on Peavey. ( for reference, I play mostly hard rock, Dio ,Ozzy etc with PAF les paul , not blues through a strat )

This Xmas I started building a pedalboard, I got a pedal train classic 2 thought it looked massive…. Then I got a strymon big sky, tube screamer TS-9, Waza-craft delay and the Waza-craft SD-1, was also lucky enough to get a story on Zuma power supply (some of this I obviously got myself I’m a grown dude and hard working it wasn’t just gifts)…. The tube screamer as a break up tone then the SD-1 in the custom mode for some rhythm then the tube screamer and SD-1 together for solos are beyond butter, it’s full on dudes silky slip n slide not sure if it’s in or out because it’s wetter than an otters pocket vibes…. Also want the pantheon but I’m worried that will hit gushing territory

I’m using my SD-1w as a boost into the OD-3. That works too.

Hello- I’m doing the exact same thing soon. OD3 as crunch/rhythm and SD-1 as lead/boost pedal- do you get a significant volume boost when switching the SD1 on, on top of the OD3?

Love it for boosting Marshalls especially. And this one should sound better just because it is black... :) Kind of wish they did this with the Waza version instead though, which I do want to pick up at some point, just because.

From what I understand, Criss used the two SD-1 pedals into a cleanish Marshall, likely on the verge of breakup depending on how he picked. Then he'd get the bulk of his gain, apparently, from the SD1s.

Dude love your playing, SD1 is a pedal that should get more love than it does for sure . Question, how does it play with single coils such as a Strat or Tele ? SD1 sounds amazing with hbuckers no question

Sounds awesome with single coils! It really fattens them up nicely.

Preference? Maxon od808, or sd1? I’ve always used the od808, but I’ve never really compared it to anything. I just really like the maxon and never felt the need to use a different one. But 10 years later, it’s all beat up and the pots are starting to fall out and i think it might be time to replace it. I basically just use it, like you said, as a pre-eq and boost for my 6505+ on 100% of the time. Anyway, sd1 sounds good here, but I never really know until I actually play through it.

Great video. I've been trying to use the SD1 with a Marshall sounding amp without much success. I find that the same way it removes some of the bass, it also kills the high end, which is not very pleasant for this kind of amp. I started using it at the front of a NUX Amp Academy pedal in Fender mode. It really shines there. Any advice on getting to work better with a Marshall sound? Great video. Thank you

I prefer it as a boost into a Marshall that is already crunchy, to go from rhythm to lead. Drive very low, level max, tone between 5 and 7
