One thing I feel needs mentioned as far as the darkling beetles as feeders. Be weary of their exoskeleton hurting your gecko. I used to let my gecko eat them from time to time, and he loved chasing them. I stopped after he got a piece of shell lodged in his gums that had to be removed. I don't know how many other people have had issues with this but that's my own personal experience. Anyway, love the video as usual!

Hi Rebecca! Tip on Silkworms! I agree that they are RIDICULOUSLY expensive live. So I found an alternative. ProBugs! ProBugs is a company that sells dub roaches, silkworms, grasshoppers, locusts, etc. They are not alive, but not freeze dried. They are freshly preserved! My geckos (Kota and Kalani) absolutely love them! They are large, so I normally cut them in half, but they will eat them even though they are not alive! And this is also useful in case some bugs are illegal that you want, as these aren't illegal to have preserved :) -Jordyn

I really can thank you enough for these videos! You love helped me so much! I’m trying to convince my mom to let me get a a leopard gecko and your videos have helped me A LOT. I have a question tho could you do a video on how to set up your cricket and mealworm habitat? I saw on a video that you can put the meal worms in the fridge and they will like go into a sleep for a bit but idk if that’s true so a video showing how to set up and store ur cricket/mealworm farm would be great! Also how many different bugs should you feed your gecko? If I lm able to get one I’m planing on feeding it crickets and mealworms but idk if my gecko would need more variety.
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 2 жыл бұрын
Live crickets, roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Mealworms, super worms, and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better. For crickets, all you need is a decent sized container (with air holes and a secure lid), egg cartons, and veggies.

@mitchl5220
@mitchl5220 4 жыл бұрын
Crickets lay their eggs in soil so people who wanna breed them for different age sizes set up a soil tub inside the container and then isolate it from the normal crickets into a new container. Then the cricket eggs can hatch and you will have a container filled with smaller crickets. This is how sellers produce different sizes of the same species easily.

Red runner roaches are supposed to be the healthiest insect and most nutritious insect for your reptiles and amphibians. Even healthier for them then dubia roaches or crickets the difference is red runner roaches have the the same amount of protein, calcium, fiber and fat as dubia roaches. Which is more than crickets but where red runner roaches are different is they have higher B12 content then dubia roaches hope this helps.

Karen B. A cleanup crew is a mixture of isopods and springtails that’s eat decomposing food and poop. There isn’t really a need to control the population because the more there are, the richer the soil will be and the less poop there will be.
@petrescuework-difficultcas6581
@petrescuework-difficultcas6581 4 жыл бұрын
@@kendall4060 And as it is an enclosed setup, the amount of food for them is usually limited (if you don't feed them on top). So if you fear of them getting overpopulated, just stop feeding them additionally that much. Every population in a enclosed setup will then regulate the population by itself after the amount of food there is provided. It's the same as with dove populations in different countries. We have doves called "city doves" here. They live in the pedestrian areas and feed of dropped food, bread crumbs, fast food that was dropped on the floor, etc. If you walk through our cities, there are doves everywhere. It is strictly forbidden to feed them. And sure, this may sound cruel, because if you don't feed them, they might not be able to get their babies to grow up. But feeding them will only increase the population and support their in general unhealthy and miserable lives. So the best you can do (and what you have to do by law) is to avoid dropping food for them. That way their population regulates itself so they can sustain themselves.

I just got some calci worms, silk worms and locust for my Leo and AFT. So excited to see if they like them or not! I personally do not like crickets, I’m always fighting with them 😂

I actually bought a 10gal tank for $10 on offer up (local selling app). I put a bedding of oatmeal and powdered oatmeal, I put some water rystals in 3 seperate small bins, a egg carton and a head lamp. So far only one has died I believe thats because the water crystals were gone.

I’d stop using oats. They bind calcium. Stick to fruits and veggies like carrot, potato, and greens.

Thank you for the informative video! What type of bedding do you use? Can I use grains for all of the bugs?
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 2 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that grains contain phytic acid, which binds calcium. Crickets and roaches don’t need substrate. You can also use paper towel for them.

When I buy my crickets and mealworms etc at petscorner I am told to keep them in the small box that I buy them in whilst keeping them, is this okay to do or should I should i keep them in their own big box with plenty of space.

I think they'll last longer if they have a bit more room. I used to keep mealworms in the same tub they came in, but I've just found they do better with a little extra room.

I found that especially crickets are quite difficult to take out of these small containers without some of them escaping. And I also found that fresh food goes moldy quicker in these small containers, probably because the ventilation isn't that great. I would recommend getting a "proper" set up once, then you're good to go. It's like a one-time-investment and it makes your life much easier.

I've tried every single worm (except hornworms which I cant find here in Spain) and crickets with my gecko and he will ONLY eat dubia roaches, which I have a phobia of. Oh, and the greasy unhealthy waxworms too, he loves that. My child likes to see me suffer

I feed my crickets and super worms cucumbers, what are some other things I could feed them? Also, I've heard that mealworms should only BUH-EE fed as a treat, not sure if this is true or not. I thought that they could BUH-EE fed normally like crickets.

Every time I try to breed mealworms, I use an oat substrate, but every time I end up getting an infestation of pantry moths. It's maddening because there's no reliable way to eradicate them, you can buy traps but it only works on the males. I may need to rethink my choice of substrate but I can't seem to find plain old bran anywhere.

So I have a problem regarding feeder insects. I want to get a Bearded Dragon. They’re such sweet and amazing animals, and I’ve done LOTS of research! But the only problem I have is that I am absolutely TERRIFIED of bugs, but I know I’ll have to feed them live so my Beardie can get its necessary protein. What should I do?? Maybe use tweezers? Or perhaps exposure therapy? Idk...
