My first wrestling event as a kid was Championship Wrestling in March of '82. It was at the National Gard Armory in Oklahoma City . I guess it was one of their last shows. The main event was Ric Flair vs. Paul Jones.

A few months later Bill Watts would buy the territory and rename it Mid-South. Also, he broke away from the National Wrestling Alliance, but he still maintained good relations with the other NWA members.

Mid South Wrestling ran at the same time as this video. Bill Watts and Leroy McGuirk were co-owners of Tri State until a split in 1979...Watts took Mississippi and Louisiana naming it Mid South while McGuirk kept Oklahoma,Arkansas and Southern Missouri. Watts did indeed withdraw from the NWA as you stated and remained a close ally. Later around 1982-83,Watts bought out McGuirk adding Oklahoma,Arkansas and Southern Missouri. Texas was added through Watts association with Houston promoter Paul Boesch.
