Putting a clear piece of glass or plastic over a photograph to check the accuracy of color mixes of paint is something I was aware of, but to paint on top of the glass to edit a photo and experiment with different picture ideas is something I never thought of. Gotta remember that one. That's going into my "Simple, yet powerful" mental note folder. Thanks. One side note, people should take his wise advice and paint from a print instead of a computer screen because of the important fact of screen brightness he pointed out. But if someone is really scrapped and needs to give in and paint from a screen, keeping in mind what he said and lowering the screen brightness just right could help a lot. Would be tricky to get exactly right though, and working from a print like he said is the real foolproof way to go.

have always painted no problem with my phone or pc with the reference... a good painter's job is to be a visial problem solver, and because my phone's light at times it doesnt mean what i'm working on will be a copy of that... its all relative, and depends on one's commodities, and yours wont be the same as someone else's and i'd be shocked to need to clarify the art you make comes from you, its your expression, even though looking up to others give you many steps to get around it you'll really have to take your own turns left and right all the time by you and your creativity alone.

If one has no desire to paint something just the way it looks, especially a portrait that is powerful, deeply moving, perhaps someone you love and care for...then there is no need for accuracy. My lessons are directed towards those who wish to learn how I do what I do, for those who desire to be more interpretive, imaginative, not so photo like realistic, you then are most welcome to use any approach you desire...no photo is best for the most imaginative work.

Do you use black straight from the tube or do you mix colors to create your own black?

So I'm painting Tulips with morning sunlight coming through the flowers, I'm working from a photo that I took with my phone and I'm working from the image on my desktop Mac. I hear you about the illuminated background but when I took the image to snappy snaps it came out looking too dark, the colours weren't as vivid. That said my room is very brightly lit with a daylight bulb.

This is all so true. I find that photos taken by iphone/ipad will always have a coolish cast to them as well as subject to distortions produced by failing to hold the camera still or perpendicular to the subject. I have stopped trying to take photos and make a videos instead so I can just grabbed the image I want instead of looking for the perfect pose....

Do you ever use wet on wet technique to paint a face or some areas of it like the first layer if you were layering the paint? or do you just use the brush like a color pencil and use wet on dry mostly

Do you varnish your paintings after they are done ?and do you pre strech the paper or does you paper buckle while painting to beging with?
@Stanleylestermiller3 жыл бұрын
I don't varnish my paintings. Very few artists varnish their watercolors, there is no need to do this. Sometimes I stretch my wc paper, sometimes I don't. I do always stretch larger watercolor paintings otherwise they would buckle.

Hi Stan, just wanted to say thank you for putting together those lessons 🙏. I have started painting for first time this year and your advice has been invaluable!!! Just wondering, is there a forum where one can post their work and get some feedback? I agree your lessons give everything you need to start and I am satisfied with what the result turned out of my first attempt (I am yet to buy proper paint, have been using my daughter's acrylic.). The only think that I think I am missing is a constructive feedback from a teacher :). Just checking...

Hi Alex, so glad my lessons help you. I would suggest you check to with some of the watercolor instructors in your area? I tell my students to find an instructor, who's work you really like and see if they will guide you in your painting? Other then that, finding an instructor to look at your work, if they don't live where you live, is very difficult. I do give internet lessons, the student sends me their work, I comment and send them assignments, but the fee is $60 an hour. My email is: stan@stanmiller.net Many students travel to workshops for individual guidance?

What if the display of the device is 4k AMOLED?will it be okay to paint from the device then?
@Stanleylestermiller2 жыл бұрын
There's no problem using a device to paint from if you have no desire to paint what you see as it looks...if you rather want to interpret the subject. But, if you desire to learn to paint something just as it looks, working from life is best, or a live model. The second best is to use quality prints, no devices. Any device that has an illuminated screen creates difficulties if our desire is to paint just what we see.
@cassanova93222 жыл бұрын
@Stan Miller so basically working form a device is okay if your style is more impressionistic
@Stanleylestermiller2 жыл бұрын
@@cassanova9322 absolutely...if you are more of an impressionist, an abstractionist...one who changes much of what what is looking at, it doesn't matter how you look at your image....from a phone, a photo, from life or from memory. But, if you want to learn how to paint something just the way it looks, do a portrait of someone just as they look...then get rid of the devices.

Hi Stan.... I was able to draw correct proportion for the first time in my life today...... It was a Ellen Pompeo smiling face...... I did the sketch sadly on the back of a cardboard box(cereal box)..। I wanted a non white background... So sad i cannot save the image where i achieved likeness for the first time in my life.... I used the length on my pencil to measure the proportions..... I am so proud of myself
