Since trying to learn watercolor painting I've watched 100s of videos trying to find one that would teach me how to control the water and I've finally found it...a resounding THANK YOU Mr. Miller! A lot of artists willing to share their talent tend to forget what the words basic and beginner truly mean to those of use just starting out, but not you sir! Your style of teaching and logical progression of each lesson is just what a beginner needs. I for one will be watching everything you care to share. So again, THANK YOU!

I would echo that experience. I got myself a famous book by a famous water-colourist (whose name I would omit here). I tried following everything written in the chapter on values religiously, but failed to accomplish any of the effects the author seemed be achieving with ease. It was very discouraging and daunting. I thought I sucked, but after watching this video, I feel the book is absolutely lacking in the kind of beginner friendly advice and instructions that you have in your videos. Thanks again.

Absolutely love the water tip! I just took a class in Le Mars Iowa. It was great!! And this is totally the key for me. I was using too much water and all my darks looked overworked before this tip, due to the multiple layers. Now I can get the darks in one stroke. Amazing. But I still need to practice this. Thanks Stan!

Wow, flashback! I took a class from you in the mid-1990s and I remember your emphasis on value and controlling the water. Thanks for the refreshers!

I so appreciate your explanations, Stan. You address all the things that confuse beginner mind, especially when we are self taught, and it's rare to find that - I find myself watching videos just for how someone puts the brush in water, or takes water off - and your explain it. Thank you!

I'm learning more from your videos than I did from my class. Thank you very much !!!! When you put your brush into the water, did you shake all the paint off or did you let a bit of paint on it for the purpose of this lesson so that you had the next value?

Great stuff. The sponge is one thing that I don't do because I want to feel the water content, so my habit is a much messier one, wherein I pull the water out with my fingers (hopefully the floor isn't a rug). As time has gone by, I know exactly how much water remains in the brush for every cleanout, depending upon exactly how much water I want remaining in the bristles. That is, of course, just my approach, no more or less valid, I suppose.

Im doing a project on stan miller for school and my mind is blown about the fact that he has a youtube channel. So choosing this guy as my artist is not only going to get me marks but actually help me become a better painter now. So school actually... Taught me something?

Definitely the most important aspect in learning watercolor but what exactly is "take a little less paint"? I wish more time was spent explaining those details.

I'm new to watercolor and I really love how you break it down to the novice level. I see a lot of other artist on KZfaq use two jars of water. Is that necessary? Why do you only use one?
@Stanleylestermiller4 жыл бұрын
Everyone is different. Don't know why some need two jars of water. I use one jar, when the water's dirty, I get clean water.

Hi Stan your vids are so great they made me go out and buy some water colors :) Whats the sponges job versus wiping it on the edge of the water container? Why do you need both? Also, I bought a couple of wide synthetic brushes but im not sure if they are for water color or acrylic. Any way to tell?
@Stanleylestermiller8 жыл бұрын
Hi Alphonsos, you need to be able to get your brush very dry at times, at other times the brush needs to be very wet. In you only pull the brush over the edge of your water container, your brush will be too wet at times. You can also use paper towels instead of a sponge.
@Stanleylestermiller8 жыл бұрын
When you buy a brush, ask the store clerk if it is a watercolor brush. You don't want a brush meant for acrylic. Synthetic watercolor brushes are fine.
@skinz12348 жыл бұрын
I feel real special to have gotten a answer from you :) Not everyone answers their channel. You can consider me a fan of yours from now on!!! How can we show you our appreciation? P.s. The sales women in the store have no clue what exact type of brush this is. I bought them in a store like walmart and the brushes are just sorted by size in a rack with no packaging. Any other way to tell if its a watercolor brush or not?

What do you think about allowing water to sit on a dried blob of paint in my palette and then use it when it softens?
@Stanleylestermiller4 жыл бұрын
wetting old, dried paint on your palette to soften it, is great. But that is only one way to use your colors. I always squirt (out of tubes) some fresh wc paint on my palette before I start a painting...so I can get dramatic color and dark darks if needed. I also use the old paint by wetting it and softening it.

Thank you for the reply! I didn’t really think you would see my question so was happy to get a youtube notice this morning. Wow! Thanks again for the advice AND the straight forward videos. Excellent!
