Using egg yolk with watercolor or dry pigment. Watercolor and egg tempera techniques. (beware: using egg yolk and pigment on paper, if painting thickly, is not permanent. Also, egg yolk on paper under glass can mold. Painting should dry for 1 year before framing behind glass).

A chicken egg has a white and a yolk Sakon. Separate the egg yolk from the white, use the egg yolk. If you still don't know what an egg yolk is, type "egg yolk" into your search engine.

I wasn’t too keen on this technique. It wasn’t for me. But that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong. It’s just my preference. Thank you for sharing. I do love you video’s. You’re very talented.

Hi Stan. Huge fan of your work! Was wondering about watercolor paper (like the thickness of yours in this demo) as a support for finished work. Is it too flexible, should it be panel mounted? I've read that egg tempera needs a rigid support because its not flexible.

Normally egg tempera is painted on a sold surface, a panel. But when I do my egg tempera on paper, the paper is quite thick and I use the paint fairly thin. Thicker technique would crack on paper but a thinner technique on thicker paper I believe works. I also do egg tempera on untempered masonite panel. Oil painting and acrylic paint can also be done on paper but again, if using these mediums on paper, the technique should be thin to avoid cracking. My approach on paper is experimental...so no certainty as to how it will hold up over the years.

Egg tempura is food. Egg tempera was the primary medium artists used before oil painting was invented in the 1500's.

On the wood panel, is that a traditional gesso with the rabbit skin glue and everything? Or is there something a little more modern that would work?

Has to be a traditional gesso, most common gesso for tempera is casein gesso. You can buy it online. Most people do not understand how to properly prepare a tempera surface, I dont trust any of the websites because a lot claim they are using a traditional gesso but it's just a variant of an acrylic.

@@Stanleylestermiller You know an easy way to do it much cheaper, there is a website from san francisco that sells Casein gesso premade and ready to use and bottled. It is the same gesso they used in the 50's and Wyeth used it as well exclusively. Size it and apply as I'm sure you already know how to do. But far cheaper and you dont have to wait a long time for orders of panels to get in

Using egg tempera looks extremely similar in technique and appearance as using gouache in thin layers (but without the risk of mold and increased fragility of egg tempera). Can you think of any reason why one would use egg tempera instead of gouache? I have also experimented with dry pigment and casein emulsion with similar results. It gets a little confusing as to what to finally settle on to use on a permanent basis!

I have worked in gouache, it is quite opaque. The particular way I use egg tempera, usually on paper, I achieve a semi gloss (somewhat like an oil) when finished (gouache has no shine), and I get a transparency, a depth that nearly makes parts of my painting look three dimensional...nothing in gouache gets close to that sheen and depth. The depth of egg tempera can't be experienced when looking at a reproduction unfortunately. And...egg tempera arguably holds up even better then oil through the ages...at least when done on panel.

Stan, Thanks for this video and for your brilliant watercolor paintings. Do I assume correctly that a watercolor artist would use egg tempera to achieve more opaque color, or different brush strokes?
@Stanleylestermiller

Egg tempera can be used in as many different ways as oil painting. Thick, think, photorealistic, impressionistic, whatever way one desires. The way I use egg tempera is "my" technique, not necessarily the official approach to egg tempera. For me, with my approach to egg tempera, I achieve a "look" that appears to be something in-between an oil painting and a watercolor. Not as thick as most oils, not as fluid as most watercolors. Egg tempera when finished, has a simi-gloss sheen, it has more depth then watercolor, the dark colors are richer and more like oil. The brush technique is the same as watercolor, but with much less water. Hope that helps Judy.

The layers of egg yolk/water/pigment are VERY thin. They dry almost instantly. There are egg tempera paintings hundreds of years old and they don't rot.

@@Stanleylestermiller Gouache is a well-covering paint and does not need modification in this respect. Watercolor is less opaque paint, this yolk helps. Unless it's about the other benefits of yolk.

All paints have a binder. egg yolk is the worlds most popular..in the past, binder used in paint. It helps the paint stick to the paper. Using egg yolk with watercolor makes the painting look more like an oil painting...if one desires that.
