I really loved the Chloe Burbank songs Joji dropped on Spotify while he was still doing Filthy Frank videos. They were interesting, the beats had some cool sounds, and they were chill. I feel like 88rising has diluted him a bit. Don't get me wrong, his music videos are really cool and the songs do have an appealing sound. It's just gotten to the point where a lot of the recent songs sound like different parts of the same song. "Thom", "you suck charlie", and some of the other old Spotify tracks were all unique in some way while all of the projects since 88rising sound very samey. Also, I agree that he is the one pushing 88rising up. I would've had no idea they existed if I didn't go to their channel through him being featured. They do have other slightly bigger names now but Joji was the one who got me to see their channel in the first place.

Chole Burbank was supposed to be his opening to music so he started with very basic music, and I think the new joji is the person that joji wants to be. I wish he unlocks his vocals. He harmonizes his voice in BALLADS 1 just a tad bit too much. I think the way he sings on slow dancing in the dark is perfect for him.

@@reign3864 1. That book didn't even wrap up the lore. In fact I'm pretty sure people agree it was more of an alternative take on the universe. 2. Sil3ntKn1ght I feel like some people vibe with joji and don't know filthy frank, because fans of that side of him do exist. I don't think his entire following is franku barnacles, considering most fell off because joji's music wasn't as good to them and the in tongues EP was a bit of a turnoff. I wouldn't cal ballads1 boring personally, but I can see why people hate it. Joji sounds pretty sleepy and that sleepy delivery is heavily over saturated in mainstream. People are tired of that. I sill think joji is able to carry a melody much stronger than most mumbly artists out there whether it be a mumble rapper or whatever. And there is no way joji is in the same breath as other youtubers who dived into music. Joji for one, converted to it and is a committed artist in the music industry, unlike a beached viner like a Paul brother or a ricegum, or a bobby burns, who ambitious as he is still fell flat. I also enjoy the instrumentals on ballads1. Aside of the obvious, slow dancing in the dark, I'll see you in 40 tho it drags near the end, wanted u, no fun, can't get over you, are all decent tracks to me on the record. Not everything is fantastic but there's nothing completely detestable here either. It's a strong 6.

For me, I listened to Joji for 2 months straight before actually realizing he was Filthy Frank, and that was after that Vice news article came out. I found him through the suggested lo-fi playlists on youtube and I think a lot of other people did too, because a lot of people I talk to STILL don't know that Joji used to be FilthyFrank. A lot of people in the comments say that Joji's music isn't even good or creative, but I really enjoy his music and have yet to find another artist like him that I like. I think most people saying that used to be Filthy Frank fans and are salty that he stopped being Filthy Frank and can't get over it.

Literally this, i found him through music first and i fucking love all of his work (frank and pink guy included). Obvs having the platform that he did when he switched to music fulltime pushed his career forward that isn't a secret. He got himself a lot of connections in the music industry while doing his pink guy stuff and he used them well. There are so many artists out there who become world famous by being born into money or because their parent's knew the right people, being mad at joji for working his way into the industry through the connections he got by working his ass off as filthy frank is just plain stupid.

Opinion: Joji is always so depressed and moody because he incorporates into his music the fact he knows his past as Filthy Frank pretty much defines his success and he will never be able to escape it. He is forever tied to that association and people will have a hard time respecting his music career on it's own merits. To be fair I think if Joji had ended his career as Filthy Frank a bit more gracefully and less as a bait and switch to his fandom, people would respect his music career a lot more. You can't make a video making fun of fake internet rappers, then become one.
@Guymanbot97

This is a good comment. And I agree with the whole "end it gracefully" thing. His fanbase was (still is?) growing fast. There could he people who binge all of his stuff. And what do you think their reaction will be when the last video he has posted is just one last attempt to cash in on them? Like seriously. Towards the end I felt more used than anything else. It's because everyone bought Pink Season that he got where he was, and he thanks us by just trying to get more of our money before he jumps ship.

I was newish to the Frank fun right before he dipped. (I did know about Harlem Shake and a few random things before). I'd appreciate it if Joji kinda blended the comedic hip hop elements of his FF releases and the ultra moody and sad music he's doing now. My fav example would be "Fried Noodles", "Rice Balls", "Weird McDonalds Rap" (Tribute to Ronald), and more recently "No Fun". I think then George would stand out so much more and have more credibility imo. EDIT: I want him to RAP verses and sing choruses, he can say so much more and songs will have so much more dynamic.

I understand not liking daughters new album entirely. But the hatred I’ve seen towards it is weird to me. Maybe it’s because I generally don’t hate any music quite in that way, like aggressive hatred. I just have a hard time respecting criticism when it’s so aggressive but with no appreciation for what the artist may have been trying to do or for what it genuinely does well in their eyes. Criticism as shallow as “it sucks and I hate it” and nothing more is valid, sure, but it’s also lazy and feels extremely vapid to me. The whole “I cOuLd Do tHaT” argument for avant-garde/experimental art is bogus too. If you can do it, do it. And just because you can do it doesn’t invalidate somebody else doing it. Let’s say you can draw very well, but are you going to go up to a drawing in a museum and honestly be like “I could do that”? Like context, intent, and artistic vision is important and thinking all that matters in art is the physical ability to do it is fucking shallow and pretty stupid.

While I don't necessarily think you'll always hold the first album you listened to from a band as their best, it does effect your perception of the band and the expectations you go into their albums with. This applies especially bands that have changed their sound and feel once or twice over the course of their discography. When I got into Pink Floyd, I started with The Wall. With the standard set in my head, it actually took me a while to entirely gel with Dark Side of the Moon and Meddle. Even Division Bell, while in my head I accepted as not being as powerful as Dark Side, settled into my brain easier, because it was closer to the feel of what I started with. It's a struggle that will never end for me, as even now I struggle with it when it comes to Queens of the Stone Age. I got introduced to them through ...Like Clockwork, now it's harder for me to jam with stuff like Songs For the Deaf or Lullabies to Paralyze, whereas Villains settled as naturally as it comes. Although my exposure to Them Crooked Vultures might have been the push I needed to get into their older stuff.

All of my friends from middle school who used to watch Filthy Frank still will discuss singles that he put out and stuff and I feel like a lot of other big Frank fans still do too. We still tune in because joji was a huge part of our adolescence and made a great influence on our own humor

I listen to to pimp a butterfly and the money store in the background while I work, they both can work as background music, but are best listened to with attention.

most people here arguing that FF is the reason for Joji's fame are completely sleeping on 88rising's involvement. he seamlessly went from Frank to Joji in the public eye thanks to 88r's management only, without them he'd be still releasing soundcloud songs and FF merch.

I doubt he'd have been recognised as an artist on soundcloud w/o his internet persona cause there's sooo many people out there trying to get heard. However, he is turning out to be quite successful as himself which I can't really grant to the FF franchise cause the jump from youtube to music is drastic and most people fail. I don't think the people who caused him to go #1 on hip hop billboard are the same people who watched his yt vids. so basically i think he needed it to become known in the first place but now he's made a name for himself unrelated to frank
