Hey guys! 👋
On 3rd July 2023, Vogue Arabia released the cover for their July/ Aug 2023 issue & the internet collectively gasped! The Bollywood legend Rekha graced the cover, with photographs that were stylish, regal, and mesmerizing.
After researching articles & watching her older interviews for this video essay, i was not surprised. Rekha has been - for most of her life - a purveyor of style in her films, life, and photoshoots.
I wanted to put together a video essay on Rekha for a really long time in order to discuss her immense impact on South Asian pop culture, her personal style evolution and the costumes in her films that will forever be iconic - and here it is!
In unpacking this, I read the biography on Rekha: The Untold Story by Yasser Usman and 100 ICONIC Bollywood costumes by S Assomull.
I also highlight many of the films that were significant for Rekha's career, incl: Umrao Jaan, Ijaazat, Khoobsurat, and her most iconic looks from these films.

I love Rekha so much! Grew up watching her movies. The outfit you talk about as your #1 look for Rekha is referred to as a “Khara-dupatta”. It is still worn by Hyderabadi women today, as you stated as well, during wedding festivities. Rekha’s love of the Urdu language is something that always intrigued me. If you watch Filmfare awards from the past, specifically when she rec’d a lifetime achievement award, she mentions her inspirations for learning Urdu poetry. She’s so fascinating! I absolutely love Rekha!

I was so shocked the first time I learned that she was once considered an "ugly duckling" because Rekha has always been, to me, the most stunning woman to ever work in Bollywood. I was also stunned to find out that she had no Kathak training before doing Umrao Jaan, because the dance scenes in that film are among some of my absolute favorites!

My mom’s styling in the 80s was definitely inspired by Rekha. Rekha is definitely the one and only DIVA of Bollywood and no one can steal that title from her.

Certainly loving this new direction of the channel with more elaborate production value! And as for the topic of the video it was really informative one a figure of Indian Cinema who has by far the most standout look and backstory to them, Rekha is easily one of the more exciting and interesting actresses whose artistic work and defining fashion sense or look is simply iconic.
