Someone in the comments said the 4 men in Bulbbul's life signify the 4 kinds of men irl.But I agree more with Bulbul's statement in the movie, the three brothers are the same kind of person, just in different fonts and Dr.Sudip is the other kind. All three Thakur brothers are ugly representation of masculine entitlement that comes from being the centre of patriarchy. Mahendra: a person who hides his monsterity behind a mask of 'he didn't know better' and naivete of his own actions to escape the consequences. Indranil: A hypocritical misogynist who uses the 'unspoken' rules of society to justify his actions while hiding behind the mask of propriety to hide his cruelty. Satya: A 'modern and progressive ' man whose ideas of change remain only as long as it is in someone else's home.He too hides his double facedness behind a mask of customs and cultures while touting a white flag of 'it is how it has been and I am but one man' while he enjoys the leeway given by these very customs. All of these three know that their superiority exists only until the patriarchal norms do and seek to protect it in their own ways.

My mom’s styling in the 80s was definitely inspired by Rekha. Rekha is definitely the one and only DIVA of Bollywood and no one can steal that title from her.

You can tell that SLB really likes women by the way he depicts them on screen, from how they were dressed and the jewelry they adorn. I loved this series and I want to re-watch it. Another great, well researched video, well done Tas looking forward to the next episode breakdown ❤

i discovered this channel quite recently and although the topic of the channel might seem niche for some people ( 50's Bollywood, modern Bollywood e.t.c), i highly appreciate all the effort you put in your videos 🙏 i became a fan of Hindi cinema a few years ago, and, unfortunately, i DON'T KNOW HINDI 😭 so i can't indulge myself in the Hindi-speaking content surrounding my favourite films (including Mughal-E-Azaam and other beautiful old films as well) thanks to you, now i can look at this movies from a new angle, with a newly found understanding of the context this movies were made in, see a new meaning behind the familiar scenes! (i hope my English didn't sound gabberish😅)

Oh to be taught to love your body. What a lovely story from Aditi - the virality was such a reclamation of the female form, by the female gaze.

I thought the show was really good until about halfway through then it just felt overdramatic and the characters fell flat.

I love your recap and analysis yet I still wished you had included more important things, like for example the song sakal ban being a poem by Amir Khosro and therefore the deeper meaning of the whole scene etc. I appreciate and love your work girl I am so excited for the following videos🫶🏻✨

In my opinion, watching Fareedan forgive/ feel bad for Malikajaan was really infuriating. The fact that Malikajaan sold her and we know in series that she was married to a grown man at ten years old (and also know she sold Saima out of jealousy, and we saw the aftermath of her assault!) all for her to be forgiven because she was assaulted was honestly… really weak. If a man did any of these things, he would not have been forgiven by the audience nor in the story. To see this ‘girls have to stick together no matter what they do to each other’ message was really infuriating. It’s not something I agree with and not something I liked seeing represented I think a better ending to the series would be Malikajaan’s death by Fareedan. The two should’ve had a good discussion where Fareedan understood Malikajaan’s struggles and suffering and was empathetic to it, but not forgiving. It would also be a great parallel to Bibbo’s death. Mother and daughter dying due to their values, one’s death representing the beginning of the end of a long, deep rooted suffering and cycle of cruelty of the Indian British Raj. Meanwhile, one’s death represents the never ending fight and suffering for freedom

Oh hell yes!! I’ve been eagerly awaiting your review of this- you’re one of the few ppl I trust to criticize this project from a place of good faith. I srsly respect your perspective on SLB based on other videos you’ve made abt his work, and I rly appreciated all the historical context you provided in this video essay. The information about the nath ritual was especially interesting. Hard agree on your objections to SLB failing to portray the tawaifs practicing and training and honing their craft, btw- I felt it was a big hole in the worldbuilding, and I kept finding myself wishing less time was spent on Alamzeb-centric scenes and more was devoted to that aspect of the lives of the more mature tawaifs. Rly enjoyed this analysis and looking forward to the next video in this series! (also! unrelated but I love this outfit- that embroidery looks so lovely on you ❤️)

Also, I really like how the film represented a character like Binodoni. She isn’t proud of or happy for Bulbul for gaining her freedom, and tries to ‘put her in her place’, like when she’s sitting on the steps enjoying herself. Bulbul doesn’t forgive Binodoni or leave her unpunished. And yet, there’s a complexity with her. She loved Bulbul’s husband for the same reason Bulbul loves Satya: they needed someone to be there for them less bad than their husbands. She is abandoned by her family and forced to accept her abuse. She takes care of Bulbul after the assault but tries to convince her to be quiet about it, yet you know she doesn’t really have a choice. She has a choice to be a better person, or at least be kinder to Bulbul, but she doesn’t contain it, and Bulbul doesn’t forgive her for it. Yet, bulbul, as well as we, know she’s a victim who was made by her situation, so Bulbul lets her live

It's interesting how mostly women love SLB's works, but I feel like it is mostly for the aesthetic and how pretty the women look. It's fine if you like the aesthetic of a film, but it's okay to criticize the plot and characters as well. Some people are more attracted to the glamour of his films rather than the storyline. His historical films have been criticized for being inaccurate, with some religious groups protesting and even trashing his sets. Devdas, in particular, added some parts that weren't even there in the original book. I feel like the glitz and glamour of the film sort of hides a lot of the criticism people have about his films.

You should talk about a very underrated film, Paheli. Paheli is a beautiful romantic film with a fantasy backdrop. It would be great to analyse. Because it focuses on a woman's desires in a rural setting.

Exactly, I loved this movie a lot, definitely SRK is a better romantic hero in Paheli than in many other movies in this list. I particularly liked Dil Se too, he was a very intense, tragic and almost mad lover in it. And frankly, a ghost wooing a newly married woman is like ultimate rizz 😂
